Week 7 Recap:
West Texas A&M v. Angelo State
Final Score: West Texas 34 Angelo State 30
This was a close game the whole way. I have watched Angelo play a few times this season and this was by far the best and most well-rounded game that they have played all season. They were in it the entire time and never gave up. WT struck first in this game and Angelo stormed back to take a 23 to 19 lead at the half. They jumped out to a 30 to 19 lead in the third. Then, WT had to come all the way from behind in the 4th
Takeaways: Angelo State played absolutely phenomenal game. QB Kyle Washington and RB Jermie Calhoun played one of their best games of the season. They looked very impressive on the field. These two were deadly all night against WT. On the other hand, WT looked very sluggish and like their cheese fell off their cracker. They struggled all game on the defensive and offensive side of the ball, especially on the offense. They could not run the ball, at all. They were out gained in this game by the Rams. They were definitely lucky to get the win. What happened to the WT team that started the season?
Up Next: West Texas travels to Abilene to take on McMurry. Angelo State plays host to Midwestern State.
Texas A&M Commerce v. McMurry
Final Score: Texas A&M Commerce 65 McMurry 43
I was completely right about this game. I knew that it would be a high scoring contest with these two opponents shooting it threw the air. This gam saw over 100 points in a shootout at Commerce. The two offenses racked up a total of 1,062 yards. WOW! At the end of the first quarter, the score was TAMC 31 McMurry 21. That is a total of 7 TDs and 1 FG in only the 1st Quarter. The Lions took a slim half time lead at 34 to 28. McMurry came out in the 3rd and took the lead for a short time before Commerce opened it up and scored 28 unanswered points in the 4th quarter to secure the win. Thought: Not one extra point was missed in this game, because a lot of them were kicked in this contest.
Takeaways: The Lions sure know how to score points and in a hurry. On the other side, they are still having difficulty from stopping opponents from scoring on them. They were able to run the ball a little more effectively this week but it was against a team that is 1-6. Look for this team to continue to make waves and move the ball down the field.
Up Next: Texas A&M Commerce travels to Stephenville to take on Tarleton State.
Midwestern State v. West Alabama
Final Score: Midwestern State 45 West Alabama 21
This game was completely dominated by Midwestern from start to finish. The Mustangs took a dominating 28 to 7 half time lead. They came out of the 2nd half and made the score 35 to 7. They moved the ball at will on the West Alabama Tigers. The score is a little more respectable with a late TD from West Alabama. After watching West Alabama play so well against Valdosta, I never thought that Midwestern would dominate them the way that they did. I think one of the critical things for the Mustangs was to open up their passing game. They amassed 186 yards of passing and kept West Alabama guessing. Jake Glover did a great job finding the open receivers but this game goes to Jackson for his dominating performance of 138 yards and 3 TDs.
Takeaways: The Mustangs shook the D2 nation beating a team that just came off a big win over the #1 team in the nation. Midwestern is hitting their stride at the right time and could really make some waves at the end of the season and possibly get into the playoffs. Look for a big game against Angelo this week.
Up Next: Midwestern State travels to San Angelo to take on Angelo State.
Texas A&M Kingsville v. North Alabama
Final Score: North Alabama 49 Texas A&M Kingsville 17
The Javelinas fell behind early with a 21 to 0 lead by North Alabama. They responded with 10 points and then gave up a late TD in the 2nd Qtr to let North Alabama take a 28 to 10 lead into the half. The UNA Lions came out and put up 2 more TDs in the 3rd, one being an INT for a TD. They continued to have success and scored another TD in the 4th. The Javelinas got a successful drive going late in the 4th and scored their final TD with 12 seconds left on the clock. Shackelford went over the century mark on the ground and Bedford threw a season high 3 INTs.
Takeaways: The Javelinas are still having difficulty stopping the pass. They did find success in the run game with their RBs and also had more success with throwing the ball compared to the past few games. Improvement is showing but getting behind early is devastating to a team that is having difficulty taking the ball down the field. They have a tough one this weekend in Portales.
Up Next: Texas A&M Kingsville travels to Blackwater Draw to take on Eastern New Mexico.
Tarleton State v. Delta State
Final Score: Delta State 38 Tarleton State 36
This game score completely surprised me. I knew Delta was a good team but I did not think they would take down a hot Tarleton State football team. TSU jumped out to a 24 to 14 halftime lead and had a terrible 3rd quarter which doomed them in this game. They finally got back on a roll in the 4th
Takeaways: Tarleton took a step back on their possibly undefeated season. They played well but just could not secure the deal with their terrible 3rd quarter. They just could not get the edge on Delta State. However, they still hold the lead in the LSC and have a big contest this weekend against a good Commerce team.
Up Next: Tarleton State hosts Texas A&M Commerce.
Eastern New Mexico v. Northeastern State (OK)
Final Score: ENMU 35 Northeastern State 14
They Greyhounds really looked good in this contest. They scored 14 unanswered points in the 2nd quarter to take a 21 to 7 halftime lead. They came out in the 2nd half and put 2 more TDs on the board and really stymied the Northeastern offense. ENMU amassed an amazing 368 yards on the ground and took complete control of this game. What is the surprise in this game? ENMU only had 1 turnover. The elimination of all the turnovers put them in great position to win this game and I think that really shined.
Takeaways: ENMU is running the ball very well and are striving on working on getting rid of all the turnovers. Jordan Wells had a great game with 8 carries for 132 yards. That is an average of 16.5 yards per carry. Unbelievable! Christian Long also had a great game with 103 yards in this game. The hounds are definitely on a hot streak and will only continue to get better. 2 great performances truly makes up for the first half of the season. Crazy note: The hounds only threw the ball a total of 7 times.
