I will be previewing all of the LSC football teams over the next few weeks before the start of the season. The previews will be i
n alphabetical order and I will release them periodically. The season will start on Thursday, September 4th.

We start with the Angelo State Rams. The Rams are a very interesting team that was a few plays away from making major waves in the LSC last year.

Angelo State Information:

2013 Season Record: Overall (5-6) LSC Record (2-4): Lost 4 LSC games by 6 points or less. That really stands out. They played close with every team in the LSC last season.

Head Coach: Will Wagner (4th Season as Rams Head Coach)

Who returns?

The Rams Offense have 5 offensive starters returning from last season. Including the Preseason Player of the Year in Quarterback Kyle Washington, Jr.

The Rams Defense has 7 defensive starters returning from last season. Including standout Linebacker Rush Seaver, Sr.

The Rams Offense: Pistol Formation
The Rams Defense: 4-2-5 Formation

2014 Angelo State Schedule:

Sept. 13 v. Western State Colorado
Sept. 20 v. McMurry
Sept. 27 v. WTAMU
Oct. 4 @ Midwestern State
Oct. 11 v. Texas A&M Commerce
Oct. 18 @ Texas A&M Kingsville
Oct. 25 v. ENMU
Nov. 1 @ Tarleton State
Nov. 8 - LSC Playoff
Nov. 16 - LSC Playoff

The Rams have a tough schedule with the parity being the closest that it has been in some time in the LSC. They start out with 3 straight home games before they hit the road to Wichita Falls. The season comes to a close playing two tough opponents in TSU and ENMU.
The Rams were very close to turning their record from 5-6 to 9-2. It could have easily gone either way in my opinion. There were only 2 games last season that were out of their reach. I asked Coach Wagner how do you take the next step to move forward in this regard to finishing these games strong. Coach Wagner stated that it takes leadership, reduce the breakdowns and the staff is trying to recruit a kicker.

Coach Wagner comments about their 2014 schedule: I really like how our schedule is set this season. One of the unfortunate aspect
s of this schedule is the fact that we do not have a game Week 1. We are going to use it to our advantage in preparation for the season and look forward to our first game on September 13 against Western State Colorado.

-First time Angelo State will play on campus in program history.

This is an exciting time for Angelo State University. For the first time in ASU history, we will be playing all home games on campus at the LeGrand Stadium at First Community Credit Union Field. We have a great nucleus of players returning that will bring a tremendous amount of experience and leadership.

Thoughts on the Upcoming Season:
Kyle Washington takes the main stage in his junior year with even more expectations for this season. He had a tremendous year as a sophmore breaking the rushing/passing record. He loses Jermie Calhoun but has Blake Smith to help carry the load. Is Smith better than Calhoun? No idea, yet but he can run the ball, well. The receivers should step up and help Washington this season exploit secondarys. I think they will really improve in the passing game which will open their run game that much more. On the defense, Rush leads the defense hoping to add to his already impressive junior year. I expect Rush to be another great playmaker on the defense. The defense will be my main concern for this team. I think they will score plenty of points, but can they stop anyone is the question. The other point is can they hold a lead and not let teams come back like last season, this happened multiple times. These need to be their focus areas of improvements for this season to be a success. I have a tremendous amount of respect for the Angelo State Rams and Coach Wagner. I think this season will be a major test for the program on how they have progressed through the past few seasons. Could they win the LSC? Yes. Do they have the talent? Yes. I think the Rams open the season up in good fashion before going into a big battle against West Texas. The games that I am intrigued to see the most are WT, Commerce, ENMU and Tarleton games versus the Rams. Can the Rams beat the teams on their schedule? Absolutely. Will they win more games or be a .500 team? That is what we are going to find out...
