INTRO into the Season: The Falcons enter their 2nd year in Division 2 Football and the Lone Star Conference. As most know, this is a brand-new program with no history of football. The Falcons defense struggled in their first season, they have quite a bit of improvement needed to be competitive in the LSC. We have to give them the benefit because starting a new football program can be incredibly difficult, especially in terms of recruiting. The Falcons had some bright spots on defenses but really could not slow down the high-powered LSC offenses. Their closest game came against OPSU with a 10-point defeat. Overall, they will have to continue improving their defense to get where they need to be. This coaching staff knows exactly what to do to get them there. As we all know, Rome was not built in a day. This season will be good to see where their progression is at.
The UTPB offense was great to see in their first year. I was personally impressed with their passing game, led by Kameron Mathis and WR Mitchell Leonard (673 receiving yards, 7 TDs). The passing game accumulated 2,476 yards and 17 TDs; pretty good for a passing offense. Additionally, the running game had great success with RB Brandon Infiesto (573 rush yards, 4 TDs) and RB Jordan Williams (412 rush yards, 1 TD), who shared duties almost equally (109 and 106 attempts each). RB Marquis Simmons (295 rush yards, 5 TDs) should also be right back in the mix.
