Took the trip to Adamson tonight. Two words: Bug spray.
St. Cloud State 26, California 3
Random thoughts:
-- It looked like California just wasn't ready. Maybe it was the hype or jitters, but from the fumble on the opening kickoff, nothing went right for the Vulcans.
-- The offense looked way, way out of synch. Lalich made some bad reads and had some horrible throws; his receivers dropped two potential touchdowns. He overthrew Mayo in the end zone on what should have been an easy touchdown.
--On defense, two things jumped out at me: California can be pushed around (keep in mind St. Cloud also had a massive offensive line), and the Vulcans looked awfully tired, even in the first half.
-- Thomas Mayo did not stand out. He made a couple nice plays off quick hitches, but he dropped a couple catchable balls. It's going to take some time for the passing game as a whole to get clicking.
-- The absence of Brett Diamond was noticeable.
-- St. Cloud State didn't have one standout player. But they brought 53 pretty damn good ones. The Huskies didn't do anything real flashy; they just executed their game plan.
-- Sa'Quan Clark's interception in the second quarter was one of the better plays I've ever seen by a defensive lineman.
-- Cal's run game was non-existant. Again, credit St. Cloud. The Huskies were all over the place on defense.
-- Rontez Miles is legit.
-- The Adamson sound system needs work.
-- Did I mention bug spray?
