Lamont Smith and Thomas Mayo scored three touchdowns apiece to lead California to an easy 44-0 trouncing of Elizabeth City (N.C.) State in the first round of the NCAA Division II playoffs on Saturday at Adamson Stadium.
The host Vulcans, the No. 5 seed in Super Region One, outgained No. 4 ECSU 497-197 and forced four turnovers, two of which led to touchdowns. The game was played at California even though the Vulcans were the lower seed because ECSU did not submit a bid to host the game to the NCAA.
Smith scored on runs of 36, 5 and 1 yards, and Mayo caught touchdown passes covering 3, 12 and 15 yards from Peter Lalich as the Vulcans advanced to the second round, where they'll play No. 1 seeded Winston-Salem State next Saturday.
California (10-2) led 30-0 at halftime and cruised to the win behind a defense that allowed the Vikings into the red zone just once.
Lalich completed 26 of 34 passes for 357 yards and three touchdowns without an interception. Mario Washington caught eight passes for 165 yards, and Mayo hauled in seven catches for 89 yards and the three touchdowns. Smith led the Vulcans' ground game by rolling up 83 yards on 11 carries.
Creven Powell completed 11 of 25 passes for 112 yards, but was picked off twice, by Rontez Miles and Greg Cochrane. Darone McNeill led the Vikings' ground attack, with 67 yards on 20 carries.
Thomas Mulabah led the California defense with nine tackles, including two sacks.
KUTZTOWN 17, CONCORD 14: Robbie Frey rushed for 157 yards and a touchdown on 25 carries to lead the host Golden Bears (11-1) to their first playoff win in school history on Saturday.
Visiting Concord (7-4), of the West Virginia Conference, led 7-0 in the first quarter on Brian Kennedy's 16-yard touchdown run, but didn't score again until quarterback Zack Grossi dived in from a yard out with 55 seconds left in the game. In between, Frey scored on a 52-yard run, Jack Ruggieri kicked a 22-yard field goal, and Josh Smith caught a 21-yard scoring pass from Marshall Vogel for Kutztown.
Kutztown, the No. 3 seed in Super Region One, will travel to No. 2 New Haven (Conn.) next Saturday for a second-round matchup.
Concord outgained Kutztown 440-267, and had 26 first downs to the Golden Bears' 11, but couldn't muster enough points to get past Kutztown, which played much of the game without star quarterback Kevin Morton, who injured his knee last week in the PSAC championship game.
Morton played sparingly against Concord, and went 3-for-11 for 14 yards. Vogel completed only 6 of 15 attempts for 88 yards and a touchdown.
Grossi completed 33 of 52 attempts for 338 yards, but was intercepted twice. Ryan Stewart was his leading receiver, with eight catches for 111 yards. Kennedy led the ground game, with 31 carries for 104 yards.
