It is going on 80 + hours of darkness in the Falewicz household as the power is still out in my town from the storm last weekend. But regular readers of the column/blog would say that I have been in the dark since I started covering the NE-10 many years ago.
Two weeks left in the regular season and it is no time to let up right now.
Week 10 Capsules
St. Anselm (1-7, 1-5 NE-10) at Stonehill (2-7, 1-5 NE-10)
When: November 5th, 12:00 PM
All-Time Series: Stonehill leads the series, 7-5-0
My thoughts: It is a good passing attack versus a good running attack in the "Battle for Ol' Bronze Hawk."
St. Anselm led most of the game last Saturday against Assumption but still ended up on the wrong side of the score. The Hawks will need to find a way to finish the game on the road this weekend if they are going to grab their second win of the season. Quarterback Michael Pierce will need to spread the ball around to the playmakers and limit turnovers if they are going to be successful. St. Anselm will also need to contain the Stonehill running game and make sure that they are not breaking off big runs.
Stonehill played in the snow on Saturday and that helped them to keep the game close at Southern Connecticut. The Skyhawks will need to find a way to limit the big play capability of St. Anselm and not let their speed hurt them. Stonehill also needs to take care of the ball and push it into the end zone when they get the chance.
This game will be close until the end when Stonehill will find a way to make a big play and win the game.
Prediction: Stonehill 24 St. Anselm 21
Merrimack (5-3, 4-2 NE-10) at AIC (4-4, 3-3 NE-10)
When: November 5th, 1:00 PM
All-Time Series: AIC leads the series, 10-5-0
My thoughts: It is an explosive offense against a hard hitting defense.
Merrimack gave New Haven all they could handle before the weather interrupted their upset bid. The Warriors dominated the first half and moved the ball with ease. After returning the opening second half kickoff for a score, it seemed that Merrimack had the game in hand. But that was their last trip to the end zone and they were not able to contain the New Haven running game. Merrimack will need to find a way to contain Kevin Arduino and limit his big plays. They will also need to find a way to stretch the field against the AIC secondary.
AIC enjoyed the week off and preparation for Merrimack. AIC had a heartbreaking loss in their last game against Southern Connecticut. They have had plenty of time to stew on the loss and will need to put the loss behind them. Quarterback Kevin Arduino will need to continue his solid play and keep the Merrimack defense on their heels. The Yellow Jackets' defense will also need to find a way to keep the explosive Merrimack offense in check and not let them march up and down the field.
AIC has had Merrimack's number the past couple of seasons and it will continue. The Yellow Jackets will have enough offense and make some defensive stands late in the game to take the game.
Prediction: AIC 35 Merrimack 31
Assumption (4-4, 3-3 NE-10) at Bentley (5-4, 4-3 NE-10)
When: November 5th, 1:00 PM
All-Time Series: Bentley leads the series, 31-7-1
My thoughts: This game is always close and hard fought.
Assumption trailed most of the game at St. Anselm before pulling out the win late. The Greyhounds used their signature defense and held the Hawks in check. The quarterback duo of Kevin Bumpus and Gabe Homiski nearly threw for 300 yards and Matt Pedone gained 155 on the ground. The defense caused three turnovers and limited the St. Anselm offense to just 324 yards in the game. Assumption will need to find a way to stop Bryant Johnson and not let him distribute the ball to all of his playmakers.
Bentley took care of business in the snow last weekend at Pace and now looks to close the season out on a high note. Bryant Johnson and the other seniors play their final home game and will be honored before the game. That emotion will help Bentley on the field as the whole team will want to ensure that the seniors finish their career on a high note. The Bentley defense will need to find a way to keep the Assumption offense in check and use their ball control offense to keep the defense on their heels.
Bentley will end their season on a high note and find enough holes in the Assumption defense to win the game.
Prediction: Bentley 31 Assumption 17
Pace (1-1, 0-0 NE-10) at # 13 New Haven (8-1, 6-0 NE-10)
When: November 5th, 1:00 PM
All-Time Series: New Haven leads the series, 2-0-0
My thoughts: Two teams headed in different directions right now.
Pace had to deal with the weather along with a good Bentley offense last weekend. The Setters have struggled since their win over Stonehill in Week 2. The team is young and learning how to play college football. Jordan Raynor continues to be a dynamic player and will need to limit mistakes against the New Haven defense. Pace will also need to find a way to slow down the Chargers' offense and keep them from making big plays.
New Haven emerged from a first place showdown with Merrimack in position to win the league title and earn a playoff berth. But with 120 minutes of football left, they are not looking ahead at all. Head coach Peter Rossomando used one word for the rest of the season and that is "finish." It will start this weekend with Pace who they are much better than on paper but games are played on the field. They will need to continue their dominant play and execute on each play of the game.
New Haven should be able to dominant in each phase of the game as they are bigger, stronger and faster than Pace. The Chargers can't afford to let up on the gas pedal right now.
Prediction: New Haven 45 Pace 7
