Six weeks down and four to go before championship weekend. There is still a lot of good match ups on the schedule and a lot to be decided before November 16th.
Stonehill (4-2, 4-1 NE-10) @ New Haven (5-1, 5-0 NE-10)
When: October 19th, 1:00 PM
All-Time Series: New Haven leads the series, 4-0-0
My Thoughts: Are we in for another epic match up?
Stonehill rebounded nicely from a tough loss two weeks ago and beat Southern Connecticut 23-21 on the road. This is the second straight regular season win for the Skyhawks over the Owls after not beating them in school history. Logan Meyer and the defense were the main reasons for the second half comeback and keeping league title hopes alive for Stonehill. For the Skyhawks to win on the road, they are going to need to find a way to slow down the explosive New Haven offense. Making tackles and stops on third down is important to winning on the road. Plus Meyer will need to play like he did earlier in the season.
New Haven ran out to a big lead in the second half before hanging on late to win at Merrimack 48-41. Ronnie Nelson and Mike DeCaro continue to carve up NE-10 defenses with their play and the Chargers survived their last long road trip of the regular season. The defense for New Haven made some late stops but will need play 60 minutes this weekend. For the Chargers to win the game, they will to continue their offensive assault and move the ball with ease. They will need to make big plays when needed and the defense will need to play better than the fourth quarter at Merrimack.
Both teams will feel each other out in the first half before both offenses take off in the second half. New Haven has the better offense and will walk off the field victorious for the 22nd straight time in NE-10 play.
Prediction: New Haven 45 Stonehill 34
Pace (0-6, 0-5 NE-10) @ LIU Post (2-4, 1-4 NE-10)
When: October 19th, 1:00 PM
All-Time Series: LIU Post leads the series, 17-3-0
My Thoughts: The battle of supremacy of New York is on the line.
Pace could not slow down Bentley and lost 56-13 on their home field. The Setters answered an early Bentley touchdown to tie the game at seven. But then they allowed seven consecutive touchdowns for the Falcons and never had a chance to stay in the game. The young Pace offense was not able to establish the running game as they averaged just 1.8 yards per rush. For the Setters to win on the road, they will need to find a way to limit the big play. The offense will also need to make some plays and move the chains.
LIU Post lost their fourth straight game when they were shut out by AIC 21-0 last Saturday. The Pioneers have struggled against the top teams in their time back in the NE-10. It is a major surprise that they would drop all four games against the NE-10 favorites. For the Pioneers to win the game, they will need to move the ball and not turn over the ball. They need to get back to basics and run the ball.
Post is in need of a confidence boost and will get it this weekend. They are big and more physical than Pace and will control the line of scrimmage.
Prediction: Post 38 Pace 9
Merrimack (3-3, 2-3 NE-10) @ St. Anselm (0-6, 0-5 NE-10)
When: October 19th, 1:00 PM
All-Time Series: Merrimack leads the series, 11-3-0
My Thoughts: There will be little time to relax in this game for either defense.
Merrimack spotted New Haven too big of a lead and were not able to comeback late Saturday, dropping the game 48-41. The Warriors amassed over 600 yards of offense but were stopped late in the game inside the red zone. Joe Clancy attempted 71 passes and tossed for over 500 yards. For the Warriors to win on the road, they will need to slow down the St. Anselm offense and force them into three and out situations. Clancy will need to dictate the tempo of the game and continue his dominance of opposing defenses.
St. Anselm dropped their sixth straight game of the season, this time to Assumption by the score of 41-27. The Hawks played well early but were not able to sustain the momentum. After scoring late in the first half to cut the lead to three, St Anselm allowed a kickoff return and never recovered. Justin Bernard continues to rewrite the Hawks' record book as he hauled in 17 passes in the game. For the Hawks to win the game, they will need to slow down the Merrimack offense and not allow them to march up and down the field. The offense will need to move the ball and control the tempo.
Merrimack should be able to move the ball against St. Anselm and rack up some yards and points.
Prediction: Merrimack 52 St. Anselm 34
American International (4-2, 4-1 NE-10) @ Bentley (4-2, 3-2 NE-10)
When: October 19th, 2:00 PM
All-Time Series: Series tied at 9-9-0
My Thoughts: These teams are always physical and locked into tough, competitive games.
AIC continued their dominating defense play as they held LIU Post out of the end zone in a 21-0 victory last Saturday. The Yellow Jackets have turned up the defensive effort since they were upset at home by Assumption. They have played the way they can after being picked as the coaches' pick to win the league. Kevin Arduino scored twice in the win and continues his solid play for the offense. For the Yellow Jackets to win on the road, they will need to limit Bentley and not allow them to make big plays. The offense will need to continue their balanced attack and not allow the ball to be turned over.
Bentley played well in beating Pace 56-13 on the road last Saturday. They have struggled on the grass field in the past but did everything right. Jet Kollie had 181 yards rushing and Jeff Hill was unstoppable down the field for the Falcons. The defense allowed an early score and a late score but was solid in between. For the Falcons to win the game, they will need to establish their offense and move the ball. If they are able to convert third downs and not turn the ball over, the defense will have time on the sidelines. They will also need to find a way win some battles at the line of scrimmage.
This game will be very close as both teams are very balanced on both sides of the ball. But AIC will make a play late in the game to find a way to sneak out of Waltham with a victory.
Prediction: AIC 24 Bentley 20
Southern Connecticut (3-3, 3-2 NE-10) @ Assumption (3-3, 3-2 NE-10)
When: October 19th, 6:00 PM
All-Time Series: Southern Connecticut leads the series, 10-1-0
My Thoughts: Both teams need a win to stay in the hunt for the league title.
Southern Connecticut was in full control of the game against Stonehill but struggled in the second half to drop the game 23-21. The Owls lost quarterback Jacob Jablonski to a hand injury in the second half and the offense struggled after that. The defense gave up 16 consecutive points in the second half as the offense was held off the scoreboard. For the Owls to win on the road, they will need to establish the running game and run behind their offensive line. The defense will need stop the Assumption offense and not allow them to move the ball with ease.
Assumption made a huge kickoff return at the end of the first half and used that momentum to win on the road at St. Anselm 41-27 last Friday night. The Greyhounds welcomed back Matt Pedone and he scored twice in the victory. He had 102 yards on the ground and forms a good duo with Matt Heriveaux out of the backfield. Mike Bates and Matt Colangelo both had 13 tackles and continue to lead the Assumption defense. For the Greyhounds to win the game, they will need to grind out the yards on the ground to set up their passing game. The defense will need to win the line of scrimmage battle and not allow Southern Connecticut to run the ball.
This will be another game that will be tightly contested and come down to the final minutes. For the first time this year, Assumption will make the necessary plays to win a close game at home.
Prediction: Assumption 27 Southern Connecticut 23
