The first edition of the 2013 Regional Rankings are out and there is plenty to discuss. There is zero surprise with the top three teams in the region. All of them are undefeated but that will change in a couple of weeks when West Chester and Bloomsburg square off on the field.

Three teams have one loss and four teams have two losses. The two loss teams have zero margin for error right now and will need to win out plus get a little help from the teams above them.

Let's look at the top 10 teams in Super Region One:

1. West Chester (8-0) is undefeated after beating Shippensburg last Saturday. They have three games left including a potential State game. They play at Cheyney and then host Bloomsburg in the biggest game of the season. If they win both games, they will take on the PSAC West winner in the State Game. If they lose to Bloomsburg, they will play Clarion in the final week of the season.

2. Shepherd (7-0) is the best team in the MEC right now and controls their destiny for a first round bye. They play at Glenville St, home against West Virginia State and then at Concord. They own a win over Shippensburg which is helping their SOS. If the Rams win out, they will have at least one home playoff game.

3. Bloomsburg (8-0) is also undefeated in the PSAC and has one of the toughest schedules down the stretch. They play Thursday night against Shippensburg and then travel to face West Chester to determine the PSAC East participant in the State Game. They handled Cheyney last Saturday and have the toughest road to get into the playoffs. They also have Slippery Rock in the final game of the season which could end up being the State Game or a very good cross over game.

4. Winston-Salem State (7-1) has a tough stretch to close out the season. They host Shaw and Fayetteville State in two games that will determine who will win the Southern division of the CIAA. The Rams have plenty of playoff experience from the past couple of seasons but still need to win out to get into the playoffs. Past success doesn't matter here in 2013.

5. Slippery Rock (7-1) is one win away from a berth in the State Game. They face California this weekend and will clinch the PSAC West with a win. The Rock has won five games in a row since they lost to Gannon on the road. They have been stream rolling teams in their division and are looking to return to the postseason.

6. Virginia State (7-1) is the biggest surprise of the CIAA season as they were picked 10th in the preseason poll. They have exceeded expectations and are in line to play in the CIAA championship game. They are undefeated in the Northern division and have games at Chowan and at home against Virginia Union to close out the regular season. If they win their final three games of the season, they will be in the playoffs.

7. Stonehill (6-2) has been another of the biggest surprise in the region this year. They have lost to Bloomsburg and AIC but defeated New Haven to stop their NE-10 winning streak. The Skyhawks have Pace this weekend before traveling to Merrimack to end the regular season. They have the easiest path to the NE-10 championship game right now. One more loss puts them out of the playoff picture.

8. California (6-2) needs to win their final three games to make the playoffs. The road starts this weekend when they travel to Slippery Rock. It is followed with a home game against Mercyhurst. If they win both games, they will play in the State Game as the PSAC West representative. If they stumble, they are out of the playoff picture as a tough two week stretch with losses to IUP and West Chester are too tough to overcome.

9. Urbana (6-2) is the part of the Mountain East Conference and needs some help to move up in the rankings. Despite rebounding from a 1-2 start with losses to Findlay and Shepherd, they still have some work to do in order to move into the top six of the region. They play a Division 1 FCS team this weekend before closing out at West Virginia Wesleyan and at home with Charleston. Both of those teams are hovering around .500 so they will not get a huge SOS boast over the final three weeks of the season.

10. Concord (6-2) has two winnable games before a huge match up with currently undefeated Shepherd in the final week of the season. The Lions will need to win out as well as getting some help from the teams ahead of them. Key losses to Bowie State and Urbana are not helping them right now. But a winning streak over the final three weeks could vault them into a playoff slot.

So the breakdown by conference is PSAC (4), MEC (3). CIAA (2) and NE-10 (1). The game between AIC and New Haven might vault the winner of that game into the top 10 next week. But IUP is also 6-2 right now and might be part of the teams on the cusp of the rankings. All three of the teams were picked to be in contention this year but have not been able to win enough games to be in the top 10 right now.

The big game to watch is the West Chester and Bloomsburg battle on November 9th. The winner of that game, provided that they both win this week, should be in line for a home game in the first or second round. Another win in the State Game will guarantee one of them a bye and home field in the second round.

If the season ended today, Stonehill would be in the playoffs via earned access and Virginia State would not make the playoffs. The Skyhawks are the lone NE-10 representative right now but take a big SOS hit this weekend when they play Pace. The current structure earns them another trip to Bloomsburg whom they fell to on the first week of the season.

There is plenty of football to be played over the next three weekends. Teams need to win on the field and not rely on the committee to get them into the top six.
