The second edition of the 2013 Regional Rankings are out and there is plenty to discuss again this week. A little bit of a shakeup as two new teams enter the rankings and one team dropped several spots due to a loss. With two weeks left before the announcement of the final rankings, it is very important to continue to win games to improve your chances at making the top six.
Let's look at the top 10 teams in Super Region One:
1. West Chester (9-0) is still undefeated after defeating Cheyney last Saturday. They host Bloomsburg this weekend in a huge PSAC East game. West Chester will represent the East in the State Game with a win. If they lose, they drop into a three way tie if Shippensburg wins this weekend. The Rams control their own destiny and are in line for a home playoff game and first round bye with two more wins.
2. Shepherd (8-0) is just a step below West Chester in the rankings. They defeated Glenville State last Saturday and continue to look solid for a first round bye. The Rams entertain West Virginia State this weekend before closing out the season on the road at Concord. If Shepherd wins both games, they should have a first round bye and home playoff game in the second round.
3. Winston-Salem State (8-1) escaped with a big victory last Saturday over Shaw. They yielded 24 consecutive points after building a 21-0 lead. They scored in the final minute to keep their postseason hopes alive. They will host a game against Fayetteville State in which the winner will represent the Southern Division in the CIAA championship game. If they lose this weekend, they are likely to be on the bubble for the postseason.
4. Slippery Rock (8-1) continues to control their own destiny in the PSAC West. With a win over Seton Hill this weekend, they will win the division outright and play in the State Game. The Rock is looking to make their first playoff appearance since 1999. A win this weekend puts them into a solid position to be playing beyond the State Game.
5. Virginia State (8-1) clinched a berth in the CIAA championship game with a 28-0 victory at Chowan as the winner of the Northern division. With the win, they will await the winner of the Fayetteville/Winston-Salem game. The Trojans have one regular season game left against Virginia Union and need to take care of business the next two weekends to earn a spot in the playoffs.
6. Bloomsburg (8-1) lost on Halloween night to Shippensburg and fell from third to sixth in this week's rankings. The Huskies need to defeat West Chester this weekend to keep their playoff hopes alive. Another loss will put them out of the top six and on the outside of the playoff picture. With a win, they will create a potential three way tie in the PSAC East.
7. American International (7-2) is the highest newcomer of the week after they defeated New Haven last weekend. The Yellow Jackets are assured of playing in the NE-10 championship game against Stonehill on November 16th. AIC hosts Southern Connecticut this weekend which will hurt their SOS. But it still looks like the winner of the NE-10 championship game will be in the top eight of the region.
8. Shippensburg (6-3) had a huge win over Bloomsburg and enters the rankings this week. The Red Raiders will face Cheyney this weekend and are rooting for a Bloomsburg upset of West Chester. Their SOS will take a hit this weekend and appear to be a long shot at making the playoffs right now unless a number of teams ahead of them fall.
9. Stonehill (7-2) won last weekend over Pace but dropped in the standings. It was due to playing a winless Pace team and taking a hit in their SOS. The Skyhawks will play AIC in the NE-10 championship game in which the winner should make the playoffs. Stonehill finishes the regular season with Merrimack on the road this Saturday.
10. Urbana (6-2) lost to Division I FCS member Southeast Missouri State last weekend by the score of 37-35. They had the chance to pull the upset before allowing the winning touchdown in the final minute. The Blue Knights still have games against West Virginia Wesleyan and Charleston to close out the season. They will need to win out as well as getting some help from the teams ahead of them.
The breakdown by conference is PSAC (4), CIAA (2), MEC (2) and NE-10 (2). The MEC had three teams last week but Concord fell out despite a win and was replaced by AIC from the NE-10. California dropped out of the top ten from the PSAC but was replaced by fellow PSAC member Shippensburg.
The game of the weekend is the West Chester/Bloomsburg match up. It will help to sort out the top half of the rankings. If West Chester wins the game, they will be a solid number one in the regional rankings. If Bloomsburg wins, those teams will be bunched up again with similar records and SOS will be a major factor in next week's rankings.
The NE-10 appears that it will get a team into the playoffs barring a major change of events this weekend. If AIC and Stonehill both lose this weekend, the championship game might not be enough to get the winner into the playoffs. If both teams win this weekend, the winner of the championship is definitely in the playoffs.
It also appears that the CIAA will only get one team in the playoffs as well. The winner of the championship game will be in but the loser will be in sixth place at best. With the NE-10 looking at earned access right now, that is not good news for the loser of the CIAA championship game.
Right now if the season ended today, Bloomsburg would be out of the playoffs as AIC would have earned access and replace them in the sixth seed.
There is plenty of football to be played over the next two weekends. Teams can't faulter this late in the season and expect to make the playoffs.

#3Chuck Bitner commented11-06-2013, 02:15 PMEditing a comment^ I agree. It wouldn't. Ship needs Bloom to take another loss. If that happens, Ship will jump them in the rankings. Ship would have three losses to Bloom's two, but we know how the committee feels about the importance of head to head. Paul may have been thinking in terms of the PSAC championship, but that is already out of reach for Ship. The tie-breakers would favor Bloom.

#4Paul Falewicz commented11-07-2013, 04:50 AMEditing a commentI was thinking tie breakers as they would all have one loss in the division. But I saw later that the winner of the WC/Bloom game is the division champ.
