LIU Post has been playing on the edge all season long. So the selection show on Sunday night was just another day at the office for the Pioneers.

Eight of their 11 games this year came down to the final whistle. They were 5-3 in those games and used that experience for last Sunday night.

They were not on the radar screen of most people to make the playoffs. They were not part of the initial three Super Region One rankings and even a decisive win in the NE-10 Championship game still did not have them on most radar screens.

But they gathered Sunday night to watch the Division II playoff selection show. They saw as the top three teams in the region were announced. The top two seeds were pretty obvious and then things started to happen out of what most people thought.

First, CIAA Champion Virginia State was slotted into the number three seed in the region and a home game this coming Saturday. It was not a surprise that that the Trojans made the playoffs but just how far that they jumped up the rankings was a surprise. They had leapfrogged a 10-1 team.

Then another last second decision was that LIU Post saw their name on the screen and they were the number six seed in the region. It was a major surprise as they made the field with three losses but again, they were not on the radar screen of most people.

Since the season started 1-2 for the Pioneers, it has been an upward battle for them ever since. That 19-17 loss at Merrimack stung the team hard. They had expected to play better and not give up a touchdown in the final minute of the game to loss another tough one.

But it seemed to give Post the stepping stone that they were ready to surprise the league and not let a second tough defeat in the first three weeks hold them back.

They won consecutive road games at Assumption and Pace to start the momentum. Two more home wins over Stonehill and St. Anselm set up a first place battle with the visiting American International Yellow Jackets.

AIC was the defending NE-10 champ and coming off a very tough last second loss of their own. New Haven scored twice in the final two minutes to upset the Yellow Jackets on their homecoming weekend. Post knew the feeling of a last second loss but was not going to feel bad too long for AIC.

Post would drop the battle for first place as AIC drove the field to score late in the game for the win. But it was the last time that the Pioneers would taste defeat in the regular season. They handled their final two opponents in Southern Connecticut and Bentley to earn a rematch at AIC in the championship game.

Midway through the third quarter, it was a back and forth game before Post took control of the game. They scored on five straight possessions between late in the third quarter and early in the fourth quarter. They turned a 23-17 deficit into a 51-25 advantage in the blink of an eye.

They took advantage of each AIC mistake and scored a touchdown. There was no stopping LIU Post in that 10 minute stretch and no team in the country could have handled them during that time.

So waiting the 24 hours from their victory over AIC to the selection show was just another day at the office for Post. They have been living on the edge on season long and seem to be enjoying it because now, they have at least one more game to play in 2014.
