No games were played last weekend in the NE-10. The league decided to postpone the championship weekend this year and thus creates a weekend of no games. It helped teams to get healthy and get some more practice time on and off the field.
Let's look at each team at the midway point of the season and see what went right and wrong.
American International
They had two seasons already this year. They struggled in the first three games but righted the ship in the final two. They were able to win the last two games with their defense and that is always the way for AIC.
The Yellow Jackets have the toughest schedule in the second half as all the teams left on their schedule have a winning record. They will need to put together solid performances on both sides of the football if they are going to make a run at .500.
Assumption
They have been the class of the league once again. They have taken care of business and now have an even bigger target on their back. They are playing like a team ready to make some noise in the region.
The Greyhounds will be tested each week and need to manage those expectations. They will need to play mistake free and take care of the opportunity in front of them. The coaching staff will not let off the gas pedal as they can't afford any slip ups the rest of the season. Assumption is playoff tested and ready to play deep into the postseason.
Bentley
They have been a pleasant surprise in the first half of the season. They upset then undefeated and ranked LIU Post but fell on the road at Pace. The team can play against the top teams of the league and beat them.
The Falcons will be in the mix for the league title as they still have the teams right next and ahead of them on the schedule. They have proven that they can win big games in September but now need to do it in October and November.
LIU Post
They have been two different teams in the first half of the season. They looked like a top ranked team in the first three weeks as they crushed all opponents. Then they came back to earth in the final two weeks as they lost to Bentley and Assumption.
The Pioneers were going back to the drawing board in the bye week. They have a favorable schedule down the stretch and easily could be 8-2 to end the year. That might be enough for them to get into the playoffs and could be a dangerous team to a higher seed.
Merrimack
They have been a Jekyll and Hyde team thus far. They impressed with a near upset on the road at Bryant. But the last three weeks have seen a different team and three straight defeats.
The Warriors need to play more consistent football on both sides. The offense needs to limit turnovers and find a way to move the chains. They have some winnable games in the second half and will need to play up to their competition.
New Haven
They have been another team that exceeded expectations in the first half. The team had questions of who was going to play key positions and most of those questions were answered. The team gelled in the first half and used the last two weeks off to continue that progression.
The Chargers control their own destiny and we will see if the young team is ready to follow teams of the past. They have the tools necessary to win the league and we will see if they are able to top teams ahead of them in the standings on the road.
Pace
They were picked to finish 10th in the league. They were 3-2, 2-2 in the NE-10 and are clearly the surprise team of the league. They are 3-0 at home and defeated Bentley to finish out the first half.
The Setters have surprised everyone and will continue to surprise the rest of the season. They played one of the tougher schedules and they have more of the bottom teams in the league to finish up. They have a legitimate shot at going 5-5 this year.
Southern Connecticut
They had a very disappointing first half of the season. They were expecting to compete for the league championship but they are now trying to get back to .500. The team has been too inconsistent and they need to right the ship.
The Owls need to look at the second half of the season as a new season. If they can put the struggles of the first half in the past, they will be able to finish the season strong. They have several winnable games and need to play much better to win them.
St. Anselm
They are the only winless team in the league and have struggled on each of those games. They played four of five games on the road and that is always tough for a young team.
The Hawks need to play with a lot more confidence. They have some tough games over the final half of the season but also have some opponents on their level. They will need to play much better and gain confidence over the final weeks of the season.
Stonehill
They finished the first half of the season with two straight wins. They started with an impressive road victory at Bloomsburg before a couple of tough losses. The team seemed to right the season with wins late in the month and finished 3-2.
The Skyhawks have a very tough schedule down the stretch as they have all the top teams right now on the docket. October will prove whether they can finish near the top of the league.
