Doesn't everyone love a date with destiny? If you are Newberry College, then of course your answer is "Yes".

The South Atlantic Conference football championship picture is beginning to resemble a typical school dance.

The Wolves, chaperoned by Todd Knight, control their fate after dumping the punch bowl over Catawba in a 35-14 home victory.

Also arriving in style to the dance was Lenoir-Rhyne, the one group that the faculty didn't think would show. Fresh off a close 20-17 win over Carson-Newman, would you have imagined that Lenoir-Rhyne only attempted six passes on the afternoon? Or how about possessing a flashy 2-0 conference mark after being outscored 79 to 9 in their first two non-conference matchups?

Whether you imagined it or not, it happened.

If the Bears continue their success with freshman Nelson Brown as one of the nation's most promising young tail backs, Coach Mike Kellar's unit might have the red carpet rolled out for them. Brown square danced and tango'd his way for at least 200 yards in each of his two initial SAC contests.

Lenoir-Rhyne is not the only team in the league that cares to dance. Wingate has been standing near the band most of the night, shaking off a cold shoulder dealt by Catawba two weeks prior. The Bulldogs own a 4-1 overall record, standing 1-1 early on in the conference. Freshman defensive back Moryah Johnson picked off three passes against Limestone in their 45-26 win, one of which was a one-handed interception that would have unraveled Odell Beckham Jr.

Night parties haven't been too kind to the Catawba Indians in 2016, suffering losses to Winston-Salem State and Newberry under the lights. Bouncers Kyle Kitchens and Case Woodard continue to play at an all-region level thus far, and will need to control the crowd the next six weeks if they want to return to the playoffs. Quarterback Mike Sheehan is having to sit out this dance and all future dances in 2016 due to an ankle injury.

One team looking to make a move at the party is Carson-Newman. Whether that move is towards the dance floor or the exits, that question will be answered in the upcoming weeks. A slow 1-2 league start has all the makings of this carriage turning into a pumpkin after an uninspiring loss to Lenoir-Rhyne at Mossy Creek.

A masked ball is what Mars Hill anticipated this dance to be as their inconsistent play is covering up their true potential for SAC stardom. The Lion defense has surrendered 108 points and nearly 1,200 yards in the past two weeks. No wonder they thought this dance was a costume party, it's best to cover up those holes on defense.

As far as Brevard and Tusculum are concerned, the doors to the school gymnasium are locked and both teams appear to be going stag. Tusculum enjoyed a 21-14 win over Brevard last Saturday, and earned Jerry Odom his first and likely only win of 2016. Don't look for the Tornados to be the wingman for Tusculum much longer as they are leaving Divison II at season's end.

Week 6 2016 SAC Football Schedule
Last Week's Prediction Record (2-3)
Overall Prediction Record (22-9)

Carson-Newman (2-3)(1-2 SAC) at Brevard (1-4)(0-2 SAC)
Saturday, October 8th. 1:00 PM
Brevard, NC

Carson-Newman: 34 Brevard: 14
The Scoop:
An injury to Noah Suber was a key reason to the Eagles lack of offensive fireworks against the Bears. Back-up quarterback Derrick Evans struggled to get adjusted early on, throwing 14 times for only 29 yards while losing six yards on the ground. The three-headed monster of Antonio Wimbush, Montavious Taylor and Jamal Jones are more than capable of each surpassing the century mark against Brevard this Saturday. Tornado linebacker Jinsly John continued his torrid pace of leading the conference in tackles after racking up 15 stops and an interception in their loss against Tusculum. The Eagles will rush for over 300 yards, while John closes in on close to 20 tackles.

Newberry (4-1)(2-0 SAC) at Mars Hill (2-3)(0-1 SAC)
Saturday, October 8th. 1:30 PM
Mars Hill, NC

Newberry: 44 Mars Hill: 28
The Scoop:
It is no stretch to say that Mars Hill has posed challenges to Newberry over the past two years, where the Lions have claimed wins in both contests. Last season's nail-biting 17 to 14 win was due to much in part of Newberry's lack of passing. The absence of triggerman Raleigh Yeldell in 2015's contest saw the Wolves only muster 36 passing yards on the day. Call me a cock-eyed optomist, but I envision Newberry's passing numbers to increase ten-fold this weekend. Hard to believe there was a stretch last year where Newberry lost three consecutive games by a total of 14 points. With that being said, I am taking the Wolves by 16 points over the Lions.

Tusculum (1-4)(1-2 SAC) at Wingate (4-1)(1-1 SAC)
Saturday, October 8th. 1:30 PM
Wingate, NC

Wingate: 52 Tusculum: 7
The Scoop:
The Bulldogs have put the earlier Catawba loss in their rearview mirror and rebounded nicely in a lopsided win over Limestone less than a week ago. Sensational Wingate running back Lawrence Pittman is the nation's leader with 14 rushing touchdowns in only five contests. In the near future, let's keep an eye out on Pittman's potential Harlon Hill campaign and see if he can be a finalist for the hardware. Facing a Tusculum defense that is in the bottom half of the SAC in rush defense (187 rushing yards per game) will allow his numbers to blossom for yet another week. Pioneer quarterback Malcolm Pendergrass saw his first action of the season in last week's showdown versus Brevard, throwing for 76 yards and rushing for a game-winning fourth quarter touchdown. This matchup will not be in jeopardy in the fourth quarter.

Limestone (3-2)(0-0 IND) at Catawba (2-3)(2-1 SAC)
Saturday, October 8th. 1:30 PM
Salisbury, NC

Catawba: 18 Limestone: 10
The Scoop:
A muddy 10-3 win by Catawba last season at 'The Reservation' proved to be a defensive-minded game. Three interceptions by Indian corner back Mark McDaniel was crucial to their having left with a win that night. Potential sloppy gameday conditions due to Hurricane Matthew could respawn another low scoring contest. Catawba's Reid Carlton jumps into the fray this weekend as he prepares for his first college start under center. In order for Limestone to pull off the upset, I would have to believe it would come from the gutsy play of two weapons on offense. Saint's running back Ga'Quan Maize has rushed for 448 yards and four scores, while receiver D'Anta Fleming has hauled in 307 yards and six touchdown receptions thus far in 2016. I am still leaning towards taking Catawba by a slim margin due to their defense.

UNC-Pembroke (4-1)(0-0 IND) at Lenoir-Rhyne (2-3)(2-0 SAC)
Saturday, October 8th. 2:00 PM
Hickory, NC

UNC-Pembroke: 31 Lenoir-Rhyne: 14
The Scoop:
Talk about two teams last Saturday that had opposite emotions of what was originally planned. I thought for sure that the Bears would have been licking their wounds after facing a potent Carson-Newman offense. I thought wrong. So did the rest of the country. Lenoir-Rhyne continued their long wnning streak over the Eagles by having a relentless short yardage ground game. UNC-Pembroke on the other hand snatched defeat from the jaws of victory last weekend against #13 Tuskegee. Let me explain. The Braves had last weekend's contest all but wrapped up between the two undefeated teams, but Tuskegee rallied with around eight minutes left in the game. UNC-Pembroke was up 16-0 before they saw their lead evaporate to a dissapointing 21-16 loss in Alabama. I anticipate UNC-Pembroke to key in on Lenoir-Rhyne's Nelson Brown and force the Bears to run an uncomfortable spread offense.
