WSC women's basketball adds transfer to 2017 recruiting class
    www.wscwildcats.com

Wayne State College head women's basketball coach Chris Kielsmeier announced today that Elizabeth Osbourn of Gridley, California has signed a tender and will transfer from Yuba College in California to play basketball for the Wildcats in the 2017-18 season. Osbourn joins five other high school standouts -- Brittany Bongartz of Ramsey, Minnesota; Halley Busse of Winthrop, Minnesota; Payton Draper of Waverly, Iowa; Erin Norling from Loretto, Minnesota; and Haley Vesey of Indianola, Iowa as other members of the 2017 Wildcat recruiting class.

Osbourn (oz-born), a 6-0 forward, will have two seasons of eligibility with the Wildcats after playing this season at Yuba College in California. She earned All-Bay Valley Conference honors for the 49ers after averaging 13.9 points and 9.1 rebounds per game shooting 50 percent from the field and 69.6 percent from the free throw line in 29 games. Osbourn also earned Academic All-Conference honors while at Yuba College, helping the team to a 17-13 record. She spent her first year of college at NCAA Division II Holy Names University in California.

A graduate of Gridley High School in California, Osbourn was a two-time All-Butte View League selection in basketball after averaging 16.6 points and 6.4 rebounds per game to earn league MVP honors. She was also a three-year starter in volleyball and two-year starter in track and field and was named Appeal Democrat Athlete of the Year as a senior in 2015.

"Elizabeth is a versatile player that can play multiple positions and gives our program more depth in the three and four positions," remarked Wildcat head coach Chris Kielsmeier. "She has the quickness and athletic ability to rebound and guard on the bottom side of our zone. On the offensive end, she has a quick first step that will be able to break down defenders, but can also shoot the three. We really feel that she will be a great asset to our team with her enthusiasm, work ethic and abilities."

Wayne State finished the 2016-17 season with a record of 23-7 overall and placed second in the NSIC South Division with a 16-6 league mark. WSC graduated three seniors from last year's team.

WSC men's basketball welcomes four new players for 2017-18 season
                www.wscwildcats.com

Wayne State College head men's basketball coach Jeff Kaminksy is pleased to announce the addition of four new players to the Wildcat team for the 2017-18 season. They are Benjamin Dentlinger of New London, Iowa; Simon Hay of Omaha, Nosa Iyagbaye from Lincoln and Trevin Joseph Jr. of McDonough, Georgia.

"We are excited to have Ben, Nosa, Simon and Trevin join our program this season," remarked Kaminksy. "Not only does this group add skill, versatility and length to our current roster, but they will fit with our returning group because they are all high character individuals and great teammates."

Benjamin Dentlinger is a 6-7 forward from New London High School in Iowa where he was a three-year starter and letter-winner in basketball. He missed part of his senior season due to injury and still averaged 15.1 points, 10.8 rebounds and 4.3 blocks in 12 games, helping the team to a 21-4 record and the Iowa Class 1A State Tournament. Dentlinger accounted for 15.6 points, 9.1 rebounds and 4.0 blocks per contest as a junior to ear First Team All-Southeast Iowa Super Conference honors.

Simon Hay is a 6-3 guard from Millard West High School in Omaha, starting two years in basketball. He averaged 11.2 points, 3.2 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game as a senior to receive All-Metro Conference Honorable Mention. Hay produced 10.4 points and 2.4 rebounds a contest as a junior helping Millard West reach the Nebraska Class A State Tournament.

Nosa Iyagbaye is a 6-9 center from Parkview Christian High School in Lincoln, starting all four years. He helped the Patriots to a 21-5 record as a senior and a Nebraska Class D2 State Tournament appearance averaging 9.7 points and 10.3 rebounds per game with 58 blocked shots and received Lincoln Journal Star Class D2 Second Team All-State Honors. Iyagbaye averaged 14.4 points, 13.8 rebounds and 4.2 blocks per game as a junior and earned Second Team Class D2 and First Team All-Nebraska Frontier Conference honors.

Trevin Joseph Jr. is a 6-3 guard that transferred to Wayne State and will have one season of eligibility with the Wildcats. He comes to WSC after visits to Broward College in Florida, Shelton State in Alabama and Kilgore College in Texas. Joseph graduated from Eagles Landing High School in Georgia where he averaged 29 points per game during the Class AAAA State Tournament. As a junior at Stockbridge High School in Georgia, Joseph produced 22 points per game during the regular season.

Wayne State ended the 2016-17 season with a 10-19 record, placing sixth in the NSIC South Division at 8-14 in league play. The Wildcats doubled last year's win total under first-year head coach Frank Kaminsky and returns all players for next season since last year's roster had no seniors.

WSC men looked pretty good last night in a win against Augie, snapping an 8-game losing streak to the Vikings. They almost collapsed late, but they play fast and an exciting style. Will be fun to watch them this season. I'm hoping for a top-half finish in the South Division this year.

WSC men snap eight-game losing skid to Augustana with 80-75 win in NSIC opener
                      www.wscwildcats.com

Wayne State led for nearly the entire game, then held off a late Augustana comeback to fend off the Vikings 80-75 Monday evening in the Northern Sun Conference men's basketball opener for both teams at Rice Auditorium in Wayne. The win for WSC snaps an eight-game losing streak to Augustana dating back to January 15, 2013 and give the Wildcats a 3-1 record overall and 1-0 mark in the NSIC while the Vikings are now 3-2 and 0-1 in league play.

Augustana's Jordan Spencer opened the game with a 3-pointer for the lone Viking lead of the contest. The Wildcats made 7 of their first 11 shots of the contest and took a 17-8 lead at the 12:25 mark following an Austin Esters jumper. The Vikings got as close as three at 20-17, but the Wildcats pushed the lead back to eight several times before finishing the first half with a 36-29 lead.

Augustana started quickly in the second half and pulled within one at 36-35. Wayne State responded and took their first double-digit lead of the game at 49-39 on a Kendall Jacks layup with 13:40 remaining. Wayne State then held a double-digit lead for a good portion of the next 10 minutes until a late rally by the Vikings made the game interesting. The Wildcats led 70-58 with 2:47 to play after a pair of Jordan Cornelius free throws. Augustana used a Jordan Spencer layup with 44 seconds to play, cutting the WSC lead to 78-75. Sophomore guard Luke TerHark made one of two free throws with 16 seconds remaining to push the lead to four at 79-75. Following an Augustana missed shot, Brian Goodwin was fouled and made one of two free throws with nine seconds to play to preserve the 80-75 victory.

Jacks paced Wayne State in scoring with 20 points on 7 of 13 shooting from the field and 6 for 6 at the charity stripe. Trevin Joseph added 18 points off the bench with Cornelius finishing with 13. Wayne State made 25 of 53 shots for 47.2 percent, including 8 for 19 from the 3-point line and 22 of 30 at the free throw line.

Jordan Spencer led Augustana with a game-high 23 points followed by John Warren with 17. Augustana finished the game shooting 28 of 65 for 43.1 percent, going 4 of 15 beyond the arc and 15 of 18 at the charity stripe.

The Vikings held a 38-31 advantage in rebounding over the Wildcats with Matt Cartwright grabbing eight boards for Augustana while Cornelius hauled in seven boards for Wayne State. Augustana had one more turnover than WSC (13-12), but the Vikings held a 17-11 edge in points off turnovers. Wayne State's bench held a 35-14 advantage in scoring over Augustana. Brian Goodwin recorded six of Wayne State's 17 assists.

The Wildcats return to non-conference play this weekend at the Sanford Pentagon Showcase in Sioux Falls, playing New York Institute of Technology Saturday morning at 10:30 a.m. and Missouri Southern Saturday evening at 7:30 p.m.

WSC built an eight-point lead late in the third quarter at 52-44 following a Paige Ballinger free throw with 1:23 to play in the quarter and finished with a 55-50 lead after three quarters.

Augustana scored the first seven points of the fourth quarter to take a 57-55 lead and neither team led by more than two points with Ballinger making a layup with 25 seconds to play for the game's 14th tie at 69-69 sending the game into overtime.

After Augustana took the lead in overtime on a Presley O'Farrell 3-pointer for a 72-69 lead, WSC scored the next five points on a Kacie O'Connor layup and 3-pointer to take their only lead of overtime at 74-72. The Vikings scored eight straight points to take the lead for good at 80-75. The 'Cats got as close as three at 81-78 on a Ballinger three-point play, but the Vikings sealed the win with a Presley O'Farrell basket to win 83-78.

Paige Ballinger led the Wildcats with 22 points followed by Kacie O'Connor with 14 and Erin Norling with 11. Wayne State made 25-of-53 shots for 47.2 percent and was 6-of-17 from behind the arc. The 'Cats were 22-of-30 (73.3%) at the charity stripe.

Logan O'Farrell led Augustana with 21 points and 11 rebounds followed by Paige Peterson with 20 off the bench. Presley O'Farrell and Shelby Selland added 15 and 14 points, respectively. Augustana shot 37.3 percent from the field on 31-of-83 shooting, going 7-of-27 from 3-point range and 14-of-18 at the free throw line.

WSC out-rebounded Augustana 45-40 with Maggie Schulte grabbing 10 boards for the Wildcats.

Wayne State had 29 turnovers in the game to just 14 for Augustana, leading to a commanding 35-8 advantage in points-off-turnovers for the Vikings. Norling had four of Wayne State's 13 assists and two of the six blocked shots for the 'Cats.

The Wildcats return to non-conference play Friday, hosting Peru State in a 5 p.m. contest at Rice Auditorium.

There's definitely plenty of season left to play, but I've been encouraged with what I've seen from the 'Cats. Plenty of experience on the roster and, with how Kaminsky was able to put together a 10-win season last year, I'm also hopeful for a top-half finish in the division.

nice win by the Cats. If they get back to where they were just means the South is even better.

At a minimum I think our record this year should get back to where we were when Combs left, albeit with a completely different style of play. There will be no more 49-47 games, walking the ball up the court. We should easily manage a .500-ish record, a very tough opponent at Rice and often competitive on the road.

I'd certainly like to hope for more though. I'm not quite certain what the ceiling is. I like what I've seen against pretty good Kearney and Augie squads. Our seniors are reliable, the youngsters are improving, and we suddenly got a major contribution out of newcomer Trevin Joseph last night. There are team weaknesses to be certain, but the steady progress of this coaching regime is encouraging.
