  • 2024-25 SMSU Mustangs: Looking to make a run

Three senior rotation guys depart from a team that finished with the program's best record since 2017-18. It will be fun to see the identity of this group.

The bulk of the roster will have a couple years to make a run, as the lone senior in 2024-25 will be Dunwa Omot. He will certainly lead the way along with sophomore Aeron Stevens. Lund, Braaten and Shaw round out the returners with playing experience. That's a solid five-man group. A familiar name will be announced before long to be added to the team's probable depth chart. We'll see if any others get brought in over the summer. I've heard high praise for redshirt freshman Calvin Buss, who probably has the inside track for the seventh or eighth rotation spot.

I think we have a transfer or maybe 2 at some point that will help

Your newest Mustang transfer, along with the three high schoolers we knew about

My early guess on the 2024-25 rotation

        Braaten / Omot / Kramer / Lund / Stevens
        Shaw / Buss / ???

Definitely a little smaller going forward. The last guy might end up being either Thompson or Caleb Schlaak at this point.

The official announcement was made yesterday that Tramel Barnes is now an assistant coach at SDSU. His last year on the roster was my first at SMSU, and I enjoyed his tenure as a coach.

Kinda cool to see the former guys thriving.

Sounds like Kyle Luedtke is staying in town as the team's new GA. Previous GAs Tath Dak and Adam Schumacher both graduated and moved on, Dak to Jamestown and Schumacher to Briar Cliff.

Fun scheduling quirk....since there's only one in-conference matchup this season, SMSU and MSU-Mankato will play a nonconference MBB game on Nov. 16 in Marshall. For laker's scheduling purposes, your football team will be in Duluth, ours in Sioux Falls that day so no doubleheader with football. SMSU women will host Augsburg that night.

Oh, and the following weekend, the Mustangs along with NWMSU and Concordia-St. Paul will spend the Thanksgiving holiday weekend in lovely Fayette, Iowa. The Mustangs and Golden Bears will face the Bearcats and Peacocks for the two MBB games apiece.

                        Absolutely.

Tough nonconference slate with three regional teams on the schedule (thankfully only one is a true road game).
