  • Top teams in other regions

Made up this thread to talk about results from national title contenders outside of the Midwest.

I noticed that WLU pulled out a 3 point win at home against the mighty Shepherd Lambs (don' know their real nickname, but it seems appropriate). I'm not sure that WLU is anything close to as good as advertised. Their season stats so far indicate that they are not a particularly good three point shooting team, which would seem to me to seriously hamper their style. Their offensive stats are currently grotesquely over inflated by scoring 130+ points against a couple of terrible teams. They only scored 67 last night. Makes me want to repeat my advice to the entire Mountain East, slow the ball down, don't turn it over, and you have a chance to beat WLU. Wouldn't be surprised to see WLU lose on Sunday to Fairmont.

Of course, I clearly don't know what I'm talking about because my preseason #1, Lincoln Memorial, lost their second game of the season the other night against Carson-Newman (who is a good team, but one the most talented team in D2 should beat).

Again, I'm not sure the PI is that good at comparing teams across regions because there is little cross over play. It is good at comparing teams within a region though. I guess we could take the top 2 or 3 from each region and then tried to see if there is any common opponents within other regions. Think the sample is just too small to tell.

Agreed, my post was to show you which teams have risen to the top in each region more than anything. But this early on, even that is difficult to get a good feel for any of them. Mostly right now I look at the win% and the opponents records.

Northwest Missouri State is the real deal. Justin Pitts is probably the best player in all of D2...and he's just a junior. They might have won it last year if they weren't in the same region as Augustana.

They should be the top ranked team in the country at this point. Correct me if I'm wrong, but it looks like they're the only undefeated team in the country that also has an opponents winning % of greater than 50%.

Re: Top teams in other regions

Fairmont State beat Wheeling Jesuit at Wheeling last night.

I was not impressed with IUP against Alderson Broaddus. I could add some things on that game but will bite my tongue but AB was up 4 with 26 seconds left.

Not exactly a super bold prediction, in that the game is at Fairmont and they are ranked in top 11, and beat #3 ranked team while on the road yesterday. And Massey has Fairmont winning 91-90, if you believe that sort of thing. Based on the previous two WL games, they should be favored. As we've all agreed here, WL is the preseason top 10 darlings...they always have talent coming back, they haven't lost too many in the last 10 years, so it's a safe pick. Are they the best team in the country--I wouldn't put money on them to win it all as a prop bet, but they do have two injuries...I know, everybody does. They are minus 1 starter, and their 1st or 2nd player off the bench, depending on the rotation. And yes, they are missing the scoring from the best d2 3 pt shooter of all time, who graduated last year. All that being said, they'll be in the conversation to host the regional, with WJ, IUP and Fairmont. As last year and 3 yrs ago proved, they don't need to host to get to E8, either.
