  • Defense helps Miles to win over CAU

The shots were not falling for the Golden Bears on Saturday afternoon against Clark Atlanta, the the defense stood tall, holding the Panthers to just 14 first half points and and 34 percent shooting for the game in a 51-43 win at Knox-Windham Gymnasium. Miles (5-0, 1-0 SIAC West) has now held three opponents under 50 points this season and gave it a victory in its SIAC opener for the fourth consecutive season.

The Golden Bears trailed for approximately 40 seconds the entire game. A Rodney Battle bucket at the 17:26 mark in the first half gave Miles the lead for good and was part of a five-plus-minute run that saw Miles score 12 consecutive points. Clark Atlanta trailed by as many as 12 points in the first half, missing 18-of-24 shots from the field - including all seven 3-point attempts - while turning the ball over nine times. Miles led 25-14 at the break and looked like it was ready to cruise to victory.

Jalen Williams kept CAU in the game. His 3-pointer at the 15:32 mark in the second half cut the Panthers deficit to 28-24. Five minutes later, though, Mykayle Carter knocked down a 3-pointer and the Miles advantage was back to 39-27. The Golden Bears would not trail by more than eight points the rest of the way.

Williams had a game-high 21 points and Justin Longstreet added 11 points to lead Clark Atlanta. Battle had 19 points while Carter and Truitt Spencer each had seven points for Miles.
