  • NNU tops SPU

NNU puts up 100+ on Falcons, a game in the past they would've blown. Good new coach, Jones is unstoppable. New guards are talented, but never met a shot they didn't like. Jones gets his points in spite of the gunners. SPU has problems, not enough talent and at least for this game, they don't play defense. I came away thinking NNU could be a surprise team in the GNAC. SPU not so much, though Tony Miller is great.

And Jones was not afraid to announce to the world that he's the best player...

I agree that I didn't expect this result... SPU has had some good, tough wins this preseason, while NNU has looked improved, but but I'm not sure I would've said they would win tonight. Usually it seems that when you announce things to the world about being the best and the *man* it sneaks up to haunt you later (it's something to announce on the last night of league play rather than the first, if you're the announcing type)... We'll see what SMU has to say about that. But yeah, Jones is a really good player, but no, not the best. WOU has got a handful that are probably better (man you are so lucky Tsull ~ both of your teams looking up this year)!

Thanks for the comments, proud of both teams this year, glad the WOU admin gave the women's hoop coach time to build it. We once fired a two-time NAIA national champion coach without any scandals. Coach Shaw is doing a nice job blending the new and old talent this year, some nice additions in Triano and Boumann, among others.

Last night, Jones was the man, but yeah probably saying it isn't a great thing. NNU's guards will shoot them out of a few victories this year. They hit a few deep 3's last night when they needed to kill clock. Fans think those are great shots because they go in; I don't. They will brick themselves out of a few games this year. They often play keep-away from Jones. I like the New Zealand/transfer guard, very skilled, takes good shots. New NNU coach is excellent, too. Hope he sticks around, usually they don't at NNU.

Puzzling as to what NNU's goals are to build their program. I often go downtown after work, not a hoop poster schedule to be found. Little community outreach, and the same very old fan base (though those people are great, they show up in all weather), and not much from the community. Student fan base was good last night, but the town has 80K and they still draw poorly. In a good sign after the game, the team went to one side of the gym and clapped for the fans, turned around and went to the other side and did the same thing. New coach gets it. Now the NNU admin needs to follow suit. Could be a really fun team this year, NNU needs to tell people about it.
