The UAF hockey team in entirety is in quarantine after a house party was held by one of they players and someone at the event tested positive. Apparently students representing other sports were at the event as well. Looks like 6 or 7 student athletes have tested positive at this point... Way to go UAF hockey team for showing everyone just how quickly you can paint the picture as super grim for any sports to take place this season. It seems unlikely that college students are going to start taking pandemic restrictions or precautions seriously anytime soon and short of putting teams in a bubble like professional teams have done, sports are likely not going to work this year. School just started this past week on UAF campus where they have some 600 students living on campus and already, before the end of the first weekend we have a team in quarantine and 37 total students in quarantine in addition to the team.
In addition to this, the 3 largest high schools in Fairbanks all have their football teams in quarantine as well. Two teams went into quarantine after a game against eachother in which one player was positive and found out shortly after the game and another team due to players actively experiencing symptoms...
In short, Fairbanks has done a great job of highlighting why and how this isn't going to work well. I'm all ears to good news of how it works better elsewhere!
