  • GNAC play tonight

Four games tonight, not really good ones. Feels like the league has four quality teams in NNU, St Martin's, Central Washington, and MSU-Billings.

I'm going to the Western Oregon game tonight against Billings, I hope I don't regret it. I'm not expecting a major upset. I'll also catch the women's game against Western Washington, once again same expectations as the men. I wish our programs weren't so far down right now, but I'm not a fair weather fan and will support the teams.

I hope all the fans on the sport can catch their favorite teams this week. I'd also like to get an update on the CCAA and pacwest Conference to see how things are going there.

Nice road wins by both Alaska schools tonight. Very impressive. St Martin's looked good as did Montana State-Billings.

I was at the game in Monmouth and it was very ugly, very fast. Sadly the Western Oregon program is really at a low point. I like coach Pifer. He's a really good guy, he cares about the school and the players, all the right things. But the program Is just super low right now. There's not enough talent and then the physical talent that is there isn't combined with basketball knowledge. The players aren't very smart basketball players, though at times they can really run and jump. I hope they can rally but I doubt it.

The Yellowjackets brought only nine guys but they looked really good. They don't even start either of their 7-footers. Famous Left Hand shoots right handed and boy is he good. He had 26 points and he can light up the scoreboard fast. MSUB also really passes the ball well, moves it around the perimeter nicely, and looks for good shots. I hated the outcome of the game but I got to admit the Yellowjackets are fun to watch.

    * The Western Oregon women's game versus Western Washington was equally bad from a Wolves standpoint. What a blowout. Once again we don't have enough talent. Many of our shots didn't even hit the rim. WWU is talented and tall but WOU still looked really bad. It's going to be a long winter in Monmouth.

Props to UAF for the big road win. I'm not sure if that's Fairbanks is better or if WWU is down. Time will tell. WWU lost an 18 point lead to CWU in early December.

And have to give props for CWU women waking up after halftime. Tied ballgame for CWU/UAF women, but then CWU hits 11 3-pointers and outscores the Nanooks by 33! Huge game for CWU women hosting UAA on Saturday afternoon in Ellensburg. CWU men have a huge game at NNU.

Yeah, time will tell on this one, but Zevenbergen (E) lit it up early last night and when your post can destroy the defense like that it really opens things up for the guards that were starting slow. UAF still needs to lock down more on defense, but they had more moments of looking cohesive last night. I will say that I think the first week back after the holiday break is the only week all year where road teams sometimes have an advantage that the home team doesn't: it's easier for coaches to control the structure that goes into preparation for games after the holiday break when you are on the road then when you are at home, because you help organize more of their free time on the road than you do at home. There are some good games on Saturday: CWU @ NNU, MSUB @ SMU, and seeing how UAA does at WWU, plus seeing if UAF can put two complete games together at SFU, and whether WOU can catch a sleeping SPU team that's looking back on Thursday still.

Frustrating Saturday for CWU basketball. I was at the CWU women's contest, hosting Anchorage. Anchorage has height and they are nuts on defense. CWU never could stay consistent, however, had great comebacks in the second and third quarters. UAA was up by 14 late in the third, but CWU rattled off 12 points to cut the lead to 2, 55-53 going into the 4th. They were rolling. But UAA got back on track. That's a quality team. I like CWU's weapons though. Multiple options.

Props to WOU women, getting the dub against a decent SFU team. Maybe this is something to build on. 6-6 on the season is significantly better than what last year looked like. Anchorage and Billings look to be the class of the GNAC.

CWU men have to win on the road. Losing to a quality NNU team in OT isn't unheard of, but c'mon guys!

Props to UAF men, 3-1 in league play after a nice 2-0 road trip. St. Martin's looks to be dominant this year.

Not much to report here. It's the same old story at Azusa, where the women's team is rolling (12-1) while the men's team had to fight at home to beat first-year-in-D2 Jessup in overtime and then rallied to beat last-place Fresno 59-55. Worth noting that two of APU's three best forwards did not play in either game.

Point Loma looks to be the class of the league. Chaminade has a gaudy record but how strong the competition was, I'm not sure (20-point losses to Hilo and Academy of Art leave room for doubt). Don't get to see as much of the other teams because now that all the PacWest schools teamed up to share a network they're all pay streams, whereas under the old model most of the Southern California schools' feeds (plus Fresno and Chaminade) were free.

Wow, the Nooks found themselves a little bit in over their head with CWU tonight. I was really impressed with Sanders, Anderson, and of course Holden, who shot the lights out tonight. The Nooks tried to make a few runs and close the gap, but they just don't have the pieces that CWU does right now. Also, I have to give CWU props for showing up sharp on Thursday; a lot of teams don't travel well to Alaska and they show up on Thursday really sluggish and it's something the Nooks can seize on, but not today. Looks like it will be another tough game with NNU on Saturday. That might be the toughest traveling pair of teams this year with NNU and CWU.

On other notes, SFU won in Montana... The Vikings have yet to find a league win... Seems like it could be a real interesting season this year with more surprises than usual.
