I totally agree with you that if they said why not go d3, the A.D.s and athletes would freak out. That's what happened at Northwest Nazarene and I'm not sure if things changed that much, but they do draw well at the gate. Tickets are pretty cheap I would say around $5, same as Western Oregon. College basketball at higher levels is getting cheaper, too. Oregon State you can get in for $10 or under depending on the promotion that day. Beavers are actually good this year, too.
But yes, these athletic directors are climbers and if there was a threat to go division 3 if crowds didn't improve there might be some push. The PacWest website has some nice bios on the athletic directors of each school this month. It's interesting reading. In the lead up to each story that says part of their job is to promote their programs. I know it's a hard job but I'm wondering how much promotion is going on at the small college level. I mean come on, you got to do something. Brag about your cheaper tickets, about local guys playing, do something. Sitting back isn't going to accomplish anything.
