That is a totally different item.

Region 3 and Region 4 each have nine ranked teams. Region 2 has four ranked teams. Region 1 has three ranked teams. If the season ended today, two of the ranked teams from Region 3 and 4 will not make the playoffs. Four teams in Region 1 that are unranked will make the playoffs, and three teams in Region 2 that are unranked will make the playoffs. So a Top 28 will not indicate which teams will make the playoffs.

Worth noting that none of these weekly national polls (D2Football, AFCA, etc.) have anything to do with who actually makes the playoffs.

United Soccer Coaches offers both a national and regional polls, different from the NCAA rankings for playoff purposes.

Should I note that a team many people wonder why they are DII in football is #1 in those polls? Good to see Simon Frasier #1.

The funnies thing, CWU is #8 here and projected #9 in the region so far. Oh how early season SOS skews the early regional ranking projections if you play the weaker teams in your conference first.

Can anyone explain (dispassionately) how CSU-Pueblo who has a 3-1 record and was BEATEN HANDILY by Mines is ranked 16th and Mines only 20th in the D2Football.com poll?

CSU-Pueblo other three opponents are all 3-1; meaning all three of those opponents combined are 9-0 versus everybody except Pueblo. Mines has played two 2-2 teams and an 0-4 team; meaning the three of those opponents are 4-5 versus everybody except Mines.

Pueblo responded by beating the defending national champs...Mines next opponent was NM Highlands.

Don't worry the schedules flip as the season goes on; Mines gets tougher Pueblo gets easier...voters will reward Mines at some point.

Beaten handily is a pretty exaggerated statement but probably because Pueblo has 3 wins against teams with pretty good records, including the then #1 team, and also started off as ranked much higher than Mines. Just some guesses.

Polls are never perfect and someone will always whine. By your logic, Commerce was BEATEN HANDILY by Pueblo and ranked ahead of them as well.

The good news is that in D2 the final #1 is settled on the field via a real playoff system.
