  • Tusculum GSC ties

I watched a series or two of the Tusculum game last Saturday and Rogan Wells was showing out again. But, then I heard mention of “another Valdosta State transfer” and decided to look at the roster. They now have 5 Blazer transfers and one each from West GA and FL Tech. Their roster is full of GA and FL guys, especially players from the FL Tech home recruiting area. Also, at least six members of the coaching staff either coached at or graduated from VSU.

The Pioneers will play Lenior-Rhyne for the spring conference title and definitely will be a team to watch this fall.

    Go GSC and Roar LIONS!!

Did you see his stat line?

    Wells was 33 - 48 519 yards and 5 TD's, he also ran for 23 yards and a score.

Wells has career day, Pioneers march to 49-17 win over Saints

Wonder if he gets a shot in the NFL. He's excellent.

Yes, I saw that he set his career passing record. He is certainly talented and Kade Bell is good at OC also. I think Wells might have a better shot in the CFL.

Tusculum plays at LR Saturday afternoon for the SAC title.

I still don’t understand why Wells transferred to Tusculum. He’ll never win a ring there. Personal reasons. Family?

And why are they playing now???

The announcers for the SAC championship game mentioned something about VSU wanting to go to more of a run oriented offense, but who knows if there is any truth to that.

His brother is on the coaching staff and the OC is VSU's former OC. They have several Blazer transfers.

The SAC had a spring schedule where they split into two divisions. Several games canceled but some were played and these are the last two teams standing.

Well, Wells and the GSC-laden Tusculum Pioneers are the 2020/1 SAC Champs. I guess he just won a ring there!

I wish that VSU was playing Tusculum this fall (maybe in the playoffs). That’d set up as a great match up (though as they say, be careful what you wish for).

Proud for Rogan, the Tusculum coaches with VSU ties and Tusculum in general winning the spring SAC (especially beating L-R at L-R (I do love that)).

By the way, I didn’t think Kade Bell was actually the OC in 2018 ( https://vstateblazers.com/sports/foo.../kade-bell/496 ). He was listed as a grad assistant (though he very much influenced play calling with his dad). I understood that his dad served as his own OC and Jeremy Darveau (OL coach and a holdover from David Dean’s staff (and a fine football coach in his own right)) was very instrumental in what happened in ‘18.

That said Kade’s influence was there and his aggressive approach to offense was a big factor in our winning the ‘18 championship. And frankly I love the mindset he and his dad have in their approach to offense. When they’ve got the ball they ATTACK the field with a mindset of “if you can stop me then stop me. If not I’m gonna whip your tail”. I relate to that style a lot more than a probe, probe, hope offensive approach.

Kade is also a heckova fine recruiter.

BTW, Darveau is now at Southern Miss with Will Hall (also on staff there is former VSU QB Cayden Cochran, who QB’d us to the 2012 Championship).

Yeah, Kade was the play caller in all of 2018.

But the significant change for Bell is he turned over the play-calling for the first time in his career midway through last season. Kade Bell now handles those duties, though Kerwin does retain veto power over his son if he wants to run a different play.
Three years ago, Kerwin Bell’s coaching career took its biggest detour when his nine-year employment with Jacksonville University quickly dissolved into a messy divorce. It had nothing to do with the Dolphins’ football program not being successful because JU went 66-35 on his watch, a winning percentage (.643) far superior to anything before he arrived or since his departure. School administrators had decided long before the 2015 season ended, though they never made it public,

We were 1-3 halfway through the 2017 season (we only played 9 games (Irma)). Kerwin was alternating Wells and another guy named Robles.

We were 4-1 after Rogan became the starter and Kade started calling plays.

For all that wonder about the Rogan/Tusculum connection, Rogan’s brother was the #2 QB behind Kade Bell at Jacksonville. I’m sure Rogan as a high school kid spent a lot of time around Kade. That’s a relationship that has roots.

The sad part is that all of these folks could still be at VSU if Kerwin hadn’t ran to the dollar signs of FBS.

                          That’s true.

Bell very well could have had a second championship (and that’s not a slight to the current staff - just to continue the momentum Bell and crew had in 2018 would have been something).

I also thought it was a shame that Bell and the others that went to USF never got to have at least one recruiting class. Darveau was our recruiting coordinator. He’s very good. Kerwin was a great recruiter (especially in Florida where every parent and grandparent knew his name). Kade Bell is a recruiting phenom. I thought it stunk that they didn’t get to build that offense.

Goff has spent a lot of time and energy reaching out recruiting high. school. Looking at the roster, there are a lot of redshirt freshman.
2021 should be a fun year for the team, and having 6 home games.
