  • So.....

The CN cancellation is a real puzzler. I've talked to a CN friend who claims to know the program well. He says it doesn't make sense to cancel because you are short OL players. The kids he says want to play and most of the DL guys went both ways in high school. Maybe they aren't OL specialists but you could make it work. Just saying, don't know but it kind of looks bad for the program. If it was COVID everybody would understand. Hard to believe CN has a shortage of OL players. Again, just pointing it out-- not looking to argue.

The Bears and Wingate are 2-0 . They match up this coming Friday night at Wingate. Since the Bears had an off week I watched the Bulldogs take Catawba to the woodshed 33-6 . We are going to have our hands full. We struggled with Newberry who barely got by Barton. The pups crushed Barton. We've had 2 weeks to prepare and I'm sure the coaches have watched both of the puppies games. We should be ready to go to the land of Milk and Honey with a JuJu strut.

TC is interesting. The lose to Newberry in embarrassing fashion in their opener. The imports didn't set the offense on fire as many thought. The following week they beat up a limping Lion squad that hasn't seen the field since. The Pios crushed the Flying Feet by 40 and the import QB had a good day. The Pios have an improved Limestone and CN left on their schedule.

It is kind of odd, but C-N had 5 offensive lineman that would be cleared to play and you have to have 6 according to the SAC. They have 51 players on the injury report.

But IDK. If it were the fall season, that matters, yeah I'd be embarrassed. But this spring season is just bleh to me. I don't think it's as big of a deal as some people are making it. I could be wrong fellas (and ladies if there are any), but I'm not worked up or remotely even care about this spring.

Not good at all for recruiting! Only takes a single weird incident such as this to tarnish a team's reputation for years.

It's not a big deal under the current circumstances. This is just bonus football at this point and with injuries & covid it won't be the only game canceled. Not going to harm CN in any way.

Frankly, this spring season is a waste of time.

I disagree with the points being made here. Football is a team sport where the opportunities to play as a together in a competitive environment are basically limited only to games. Playing one game over the course of two years is a massive loss for Carson-Newman's ability to execute its offense and allow its defense reps in game speed. While I agree that the spring season shouldn't count for jack, it's a great time for teams to allow younger players to play and gives new players and coaches a soft landing spot to transition into the fall. From an LR perspective we now have multiple high level freshmen teethed and ready to play another four years (starting in the fall), and I assume this is the case for Wingate as well. I see this as an opportunity for LR and Wingate to really separate from the pack and other teams like Tusculum will come into the fall with a fully installed offense and what is basically a two year Tusculum starting QB (Wells) at the helm.

It sucks for CN and Catawba, but this is going to hurt their ability to keep up with the rest of the SAC in a big way.

Sadly, to me, it sends the wrong message to teams which have them on their schedule in the future. Will they receive a call from CN's coach saying, sorry, but we're not going to play this week, I just found out that a couple of our tight ends and punter aren't feeling well, so we're going to stay home this Saturday to see if they get to feeling better. Sorry for any inconvenience.

I disagree with you guys and dont think it's as big of a deal as your making it. Based on the kids who are already here and not playing this spring, and the kids who I've met in the past few weeks recruiting is going to be just fine. I promise you. Kids dont care.

But hey, maybe your right and CN is going to trash lol.

"The Carson-Newman football team has opted out of the remainder of the 2021 spring schedule, head coach Mike Clowney announced Thursday afternoon.

The decision was made with the health and safety of the entire program as the main focus.

"I can't say enough about the effort our players and coaching staff has put in over the last nine months to try to make an unprecedented spring season work," Carson-Newman head football coach Mike Clowney said. "Through all of this, we have kept our student-athletes health and well-being at the forefront. With that thought in mind, and after much prayerful consideration, we have elected to opt out of the remainder of our spring season. Again, I have so much admiration for our staff, our players and the entire Carson-Newman family's dedication toward this program and now their willingness to turn their attention toward our fall season."

Carson-Newman concludes its spring season 1-0 with a 40-37 four-overtime win over UVA Wise on March 13. The Eagles had a game cancelled on March 20 thanks to CoVID issues within Mars Hill's program before C-N's own issues with injuries and CoVID forced the cancellation of a March 27 contest with Limestone."

Yet CN has softball, baseball, soccer, other sports going on, are they not worried about their health and well being?

Those other sports didn't have half of their roster on the injured list for various reasons and were playing more than a mini-schedule....
