Coach Ken Sparks served as the head football coach at Carson–Newman University in Jefferson City, Tennessee from 1980 until his retirement at the end of the 2016 season.

After 37 years as head coach at Carson-Newman, he was the fifth winningest coach in college football history with a record of 338-99-2.

Very impressive numbers for a very long period with only a few losing seasons for CNU. Your college had the right chemistry for along time.

Yeah most d2 folks know that. He was pretty good at that coaching football thing!

I didn't realize until I looked it up that Elon won back to back NAIA titles in 1980 and 1981. Man the SAC dominated NAIA in the 80s

Yep most people who follow D2 (though the number gets smaller each year) remembers the glory days of the past when CN was feared powerhouse program.

Today's yet another reminder that CN's football these days no longer resembles the highly respected, feared , and very successful program of the past.

However, there's still hope that things will change in the.near future.

Truth. I thought Brady would play forever and New England would win 10-12 more super bowls!

Newberry hired the Offensive Coordinator (Clayton Johnson) from Elon in 1982 to be the head coach at Newberry. I played for this man while at Newberry. Great coach and a great man, however, we had an administration at the time that was not willing to provide the resources needed for him to be successful. He ended up leaving Newberry after a semi-successful 7 year period.
