  • Where has all the Offense gone?

To the tune of "Where Have All The Flowers Gone"

Where has all the Offense gone? running and passing
Where has all the Offense gone, from 2 years ago
    Oh will it ever return?
    Oh will it ever return?

Where have all the players gone? Moore, Toliver, Parrish, Wortham, Evans all gone
Where have all the players gone? used eligibility everyone
Oh will some new players come along?
Oh will they ever come along.

2016: 8 Teams averaged over 420 yards of Offense per game
    2018: 1

2016: 9 Teams averaged over 30 points per game
    2018: 2

2016: 5 Individuals averaged more rushing yards per game than the 2018 Leader does. We likely won't see a 1000 yard rusher through 11 games in 2018. in 2016 we saw 5.

2016: 3 individuals averaged more passing yards per game than the 2018 Leader does.

2018: At least 5 Teams average 75 yards a game less in Offense than in 2016, 2 100+ less and another 90+ less.

It makes Defenses look better while in reality the quality of Offensive ability has greatly diminished in just 2 years. The number of explosive players is almost non-existent when you compare it to 2016. There are certainly some very good players around but to the delight of Defensive Coordinators just not near the same caliber as a mere 2 years ago. It makes their job much easier.

HSU offense has been solid and only going to get better, I can't speak for everybody else, but I'm excited about how our offense has been looking.

Should set up for a really good one in 2019 with a lot of the talent coming back.

I was speaking the Conference as a whole but regardless even as the Conference leading Offense you are still down 36 yards per game from 2 years ago when you didn't lead the Conference.

I think defenses have improved too. Harding, SE OK and OBU are all stout. SAU has flashes.

Perhaps their cycles have lined up. Graduation cycles, that is. Maybe lots of young O's and experienced D's right now? Conferences seem to trend like that over time. A couple of Shootout years, followed by a couple of defense fest years.

That's a good point. It certainly fits our team as far as the Defense goes. Two years ago 8 of the current 11 starters had to start because we had no better options. Most if not all should have been learning from the scout team then. That inexperience and lack of maturity hurt us badly. You can't Coach game experience and 2 more years in the weight room took them from being totally physically manhandled to being able to hold their own. They haven't improved as much as a whole one would expect for so much experience but it has certainly helped. A couple of transfer starters since then has helped as well. Back then there was no focus on Defense from the Head Coach, he was all in as Offensive Coordinator, it was all he knew before trying to build a Defense. In addition we now have experienced Grad Student Coaches on Defense the same ones who back then had little to offer. Experience and maturity is invaluable. We now have that. back then as a whole we had little.
