  • Wayne State Introduces Women's Soccer

Any thoughts on the WSU Women's Soccer Program?

I always felt like this was gonna be the next sport Wayne State would add, especially after the partnership with Detroit City FC. WSU will now participate in every GLIAC women's sport except Lacrosse, same as Saginaw Valley.

The practice field they'll be using has fresh turf (the grass used to be terrible) and new LED lights. I'll be very interested to see how it will be retrofitted to include space for fans and getting a scoreboard installed. Plus, I wonder where they'll put facilities for the athletes (maybe an indoor facility is in the works?). I'd think higher profile games will be moved to Keyworth in Hamtramck or to Cass Tech.

Either way, this is really good move for WSU. Hopefully they can get a fraction of the supporter spirit that DCFC has.

Saginaw Valley State does have Women's Lacrosse. The team just had its first season. SVSU along with Davenport and Grand Valley State are the three members competing in all GLIAC women's sports.

Why no men's team? Title IX issue?

That would be my guess. They directly cited Title IX as a reason for adding the team in the first place. Women's Soccer adds 9.9 women's scholarships.
