Wild (and admittedly probably not realistic) idea. Add a 3rd game vs all GNAC opponents at neutral sight. SFU vc CWU in Seattle, CWU vs WOU in Portland, Have APU playing their 3rd games at the Redwood Bowl (make HSU see what they are missing without football), something along those lines, Gets every GNAC an extra game on the schedule. I imagine facility rental might be cost prohibitive.

Does CWU bite the bullet and join the Big Sky if those teams leave for the WAC. CWU would have bus rides to Portland, Cheney, Pocatello, Bozeman, Moscow, and Missoula. Just food for thought

The phrase(s) that pay are "Chicago" and "State (of Illinois)" ... not exactly two sterling examples of competent governance.

Desperate for games. CWU is very happy with DII, and it fits the model quite well. The EWU/TAMUK change was due to the home facility not being ready, and it would necessitate the rental of another venue. Thew average take on a FCS type game is very small. When CWU went to Montana in 2008, they got a little over 100k. The EWU payout was a lot smaller.

But because the WAC is trying to survive they will feed into the egos of current administrators and get them to make decisions that could be detrimental in the long term.
What I don't get is why not try and go out and win D2 titles? Dixie doesn't win anything. They're in a great running area, they don't have any cross country championships. They draw 4K a game in hoop. They don't win hoop titles or advance to the NCAA D2 tournament as often as they should. They don't win that much in football.

Why not get to 36 football scholarships, build facilities like Grand Valley, and kick butt there? Southern Utah went FCS/D-1 and outside of a Big Sky title a couple years ago, they're not very impressive. Does the average student really like to watch loser D-1 teams vs. winning D2 teams? In WOU's recent men's hoop regional playoff runs, they've drawn crowds better than half the Big Sky.

The worst thing, however, is all these schools jumping up have to crank up student fees just to survive in FCS/D-1.

Also, you can't just join a league because you want to. A couple years ago (mostly on the hoops board) they said WWU was going D-1 in hoops. I asked the question: "Which league are they joining?" It wasn't the WCC (private schools only), the Big Sky (have to have football), the Big West (which wants mostly California-only schools), or the WAC. Someone came up with the Great West, which no longer exists.

WWU -- like college hockey -- doesn't move the needle anywhere. They're in a remote town with a tiny gym and don't draw that well by D-1 standards. Why would a California school sign off on that? Heck, a perfect fit for the WCC is Seattle U., and that conference (mostly Gonzaga) doesn't want them in, so they're in the far-flung WAC.

If you want to move to something other than the 50-team RMAC, you have to have things in place: D-1 facilities, D-1 attendance, D-1 budget, etc. The NCAA by allowing 355 hoop teams -- mostly D-1annabees, who have no business playing D-1 -- has diluted their product and made everyone think they can be D-1. Heck, half the Big Sky shouldn't be D-1.

    * Speaking of the Big Sky, CWU is playing the University of Idaho next year in Moscow. I like CWU's chances.
Wow, sounds like your describing New Mexico State. They check all the boxes but are in such a remote location no one wants them.

Idaho elected to go FCS (much to the chagrin of most of their boosters), while NMSU went independent (and went to a bowl game last year).

The NCAA should put a moratorium on D-1 teams; MLB and NBA don't have 355 teams. They're deluting their product. In Dixie's defense, they consistently are 1st or 2nd in D2 men's hoop attendance. Utah doesn't have the population to support all those D-1 schools -- Utah, BYU, USU, Utah Valley, Southern Utah, Weber State, etc. If Dixie goes D-1/FCS, they'll most likely have to cut football.

2008......I remember it well. FG as time expired saved Montana in front of what was then the highest attendance at Washington Grizzly Stadium. 25,000.
