Jaw Dropper for sure. Considering they just moved up to FCS. Steve Uryasz AD Tarleton

I'm sure no one tormented him in his school days for that last name.

Not sure how Mr. Uryasz is arriving at his numbers, because Tarleton isn't even on the budget map with the kingpins of FCS:

North Dakota State University, $30 million.

North Dakota is right behind them at $29 million.

Montana State is at $28.5 million.

    Montana is $25 million.

    Idaho is $23 million.

Mr. Uryasz is claiming numbers similar to UTSA, Tulsa, UTEP, UNM, and NM State, greater than all of the teams in the MAC, and more than most of the teams in the Sunbelt. All G5 members. That is obviously nonsensical.

Don’t know where your numbers come from, but I hope it’s not the site that said our enrollment was 5700 and the athletic budget was 15M. Both numbers were wrong for ET.

My numbers come from Equity in Athletics, which is actual, factual data that is required to be reported by the schools to the state and federal government. It is very specific and can't be fudged, unless someone wants to go to jail. The "number of students" in this report is usually a whole lot different than the PR that the schools put out, because it is actual, full-time undergrad students. Why just undergrad? Because they are paying the athletic fees to support the athletics programs - most of the time, student fees are underwriting 90 percent or more of the of the budget, except for those items that can be allocated to the university budget in some way - "classroom space", some portion of coaches salaries, etc. Bottom line, very little outside money is paying for these programs that comparatively no one watches.

Those numbers are from year one of the D1 transition. They are a few years old and are no longer accurate

That is true. The budget could be somewhat higher today, depending on what enrollment has done, as the students are taxed to pay for the program. Here is another factual source for enrollment, which says 7383 undergrad, with 73 percent of those being "full time undergrad". That number would then be 5,390. Fall of 2022.

I have no idea who the private donors are or how the University comes up with their Athletic funding. MWC still has interest so I'm sure they have went over the numbers thoroughly to see if it makes sense. But, you can take it up with him since he is the one who made the claim.

The MWC has no serious interest in Tarleton State.

To be fair, WT was never particularly in its class playing D1, the Joe Kerbel years excepted. They won the Border Conference one time - in 1950. Joe Kerbel had the most success by far, going 68–42–1, when he was the first coach in Texas to recruit black athletes. He got a lot of mileage out of that, getting NFL All Pro players such as Duane Thomas and Mercury Morris, to play in Canyon.

Bill Yung went 26-27-1, actually a respectable record in the context of WT, during the Missouri Valley years, including the huge win at Oklahoma State. But by that time, there was lots of red ink flowing in the athletic department. Huge yearly deficits that just kept growing on the balance sheet, until there was an all-out athletic budget crisis in around 1983. Due to budget constraints, there was also very few sports at WT. By 1985-ish, WT was down to football, men's and women's basketball, volleyball, and tennis. Basically three sports for men, three for women.

Texas State has definitely grown, but it is in Austin's backyard and is the fallback for many students that do not get admitted to Texas. Most universities around the country are getting smaller, not larger. There are a lot of reasons for this.

My question is, where is Division 2 football going in Texas, and what are WT's options going forward? I am sure those things are frequently being discussed at WT.
I was at WT from 74 to 78 remember the Bill Yung years fondly, you forgot the game against a very good Colo St team in fall of 77, CSU game in with 8 wins, Sat afternoon game, only 8k fans, CSU players were talking smack.. about WT.. well look at WT roster some pretty tough guys, our Full Back went on to play for Detroit Lions he ran all over CSU that day.. Buffs ended it in a tie,, but a great game, WT earned a lot of respect.. two years later we beat Jimmy Johnsons OSU Cowboys and in 81 Yung had a good year beat Neveda LV and just barely lost to Iowa St two years in a row.
Now sad to say we are getting blown out tonite by Angelo,, just seems WT could of gone the direction of Abilene and Commerce. Now we are barely competitive in LSC.. The new stadium was suppose to be great for recruiting... so much for that and we have a President who could care less about sports.

Oh , Dad took me to many Kerbel games in the 60s.. that was some pretty good football. If you can find his bio book on Amazon its quite interesting how he recruited and how ticked off he made the coaches at Arizona St when he beat them twice.
