New Haven's so excited about all the buy games they're going to get once they clear the probation period (I'm not kidding)! They've joined the NCAA version of pro wrestling jobbers, woo hoo!

Now it's the opposite: Their enrollment puts them at the bottom of football-playing D1 schools, and they won't ever have the money to be even remotely competitive. That is, until/unless their enrollment increases by 3-4K undergrad for more student money. At least then, they can win some games.
ETAMU and WTAMU do have the one thing in common that their football teams fell apart once a Carthel left their football program.

I think they had a really good basketball team the last year of the LSC but that program is getting trounced regularly by pretty bad existing Southland teams.

Maybe this might have been a snapshot of what was facing WTAMU if they made the jump.

Your wrestling jobber comment cracked me up this morning because a few weeks ago I saw a Von Erich family tribute on facebook and of course went down the youtube rabbit hole of my youth watching old world class championship wrestling videos from the 80s.

They were runnerup to WT one year in around 2019. That's as good as they did in recent history. You gotta have revenue to move up. They don't have enough student population to generate the money. Simple math.

Small private schools like ACU can easily swing it. $5K of your $50K tuition goes to athletics. Easy peasy. $25 million budget. That won't work at state schools.
