It was hard enough for typical D2 schools in Texas to obtain good student athletes before, but the current NIL dynamics have made it extremely difficult for D2 schools and, in my opinion, have also diminished the importance of a quality post high school education for athletes. You should be going to college to get an education or you are wasting somebody’s resources. There appears to be less loyalty in most student/athletes at all colleges especially in sports, coaches and players. There has got to be a great shift from the old model of operation if the true coaches of kids can succeed at the D2 college level. This isn’t proposed to be a fix it but just an idea. Maybe what UTPB has just done is a vision for Texas D2 future. What do you think?
1.Time to hire high level high school coaches.
2. Example: TX -Allen, Westlake, Duncanville, etc.
3. Pay them 1.5 times current wages and let them bring staff.
4. Auto portal and loyalty created between coaches and current players and a familiarity established for that team and their rivals.
5. Even 2nd and 3rd string players could be coached up by coaches of trust that the players are familiar with and be competitive at D2 level.
6. Create a level of consistency by offering coach and whoever he brings/replaces as staff in offering HIM a three year contract and a retainer bonus If He remains and expectations are met.
7. If coach is hired out after the contract period, go hire another successful one.
