D1 Transfers Into The NSIC

This is a topic I'm interested to hear from a different sources on this board. Over the last few years, I keep hearing things like "we have these D1 guys transferring in" and "that team is stacked with D1 guys" so I'm curious how often do these guys dominate or show up really strongly? How often is it guys that a D1 team took a shot on and they end up being decent or average NSIC players? How often do they not live up to the hype that comes with securing the coveted D1 transfers?

I know different team threads have tidbits on this D1 guy or that one, but I'm hoping we can see which guys are coming in that are thought to be better because they were on a D1 roster previously. I'm looking forward to reading and learning more on the topic, especially since we're getting into transfer season. Thanks

Mary had a D1 3 Star transfer from the University of Houston, QB Sofian Moussad who competed with Jesse Forknell all year, it was a great balance. When one struggled another went in, if it wasnt for Moussad and his WR Mujeeb Rufai from Idaho I do not think Mary would have won a game nor been in games. Granted, our new HC came in very late and made the best out of less than ideal circumstances. They did well and I would imagine wth our OC and HC D1 ties we will be getting more. I think the D1 transfer to D2 is hit or miss. A lot of variables, is the D1 transfer coming into be the star, attitude issues? Not saying this is always the case but there are some positive experiences where a D1 transfer comes in and does well. It will be interesting to see the hauls the NSIC have this off season.

I prefer JUCO transfers personally. Most D1 transfers are just redshirts that have very little, if any game experience. There's often a reason why an FCS or FBS transfer goes D2, especially in the transfer portal age.

Our QB in 2021 had FBS experience and he did not perform well. He also didn't seem to really care about being here. Our backup that year was an FCS guy at one time too with NDSU fwiw. Anecdotal, obviously.

There are definitely examples of contributors, but I think the excitement is a little misguided. It just sounds nice to say you have a guy from a P5 program. But as far as I see it, it doesn't matter where you came from. It only matters where you are.

Quite honestly played with and against some downright bad football players that spent time on D1 rosters. On the flip side, I can think of several guys off the top of my head that were high level NSIC players and transferred to D1 schools and were good players at their new school.

D1 transfers are something fans get excited about, but (I don’t know what to call it other than) knowledgeable fans tend to understand there’s more to the story. Either they were a walk-on at the D1, or maybe some discipline issues, grade issues, various team rule issues, playing time or closer to home. Most of the time, they move from D1 to D2 because they have to, not because they want to.

Janoris Jenkins and Tyreke Hill are examples of big time players (in the case of Jenkins in college, Hill more-so now) going from D1 to D2.

For the Mavs, probably the most successful D1 transfer was Nate Gunn. Holds numerous rushing records and came to MSU after time at South Dakota.

Why would you want to kill Strand’s development playing for a blow hard with little man syndrome? :) At least hypothetically transfer him somewhere he’d enjoy! Haha

Be careful what you wish for, if he chose to move up, I'd think he'd have some decent opportunities

That's technically true, however they did not transfer for academic purposes or a lack of playing time. They were both dismissed from their respective P5 programs.

They were already well ahead of the rest of the field when they joined their D2 programs.

Out of curiosity how many D1 transfers does BSU, Mankato, Augie and Duluth bring in historically? I am assuming it is relatively low if any.

I can’t speak historically, like many others, but checking out current rosters I saw:

Augie-1 from Iowa State

BSu-1 SDSU receiver and a few from the NSIC

UMD- 4 total: 2 from Montana State, 1 from Minnesota, 1 from NDSU, a few from the NSIC and a couple from other colleges/JUCO

Mankato State-7 total: Northern Illinois, Illinois State, NDSU, 2 South Dakota, North Dakota, Missouri. Several from the NSIC and others from different colleges

I'm not sure about the others, but MSU does consistently bring in more of these guys than any other team as far as I've seen. They are obviously a destination for players looking to move down. However, they are rarely the playmakers you hear about.

I mentioned Ricky Lloyd and I also know they had Scott Leuis's kid a while back who seemed to play pretty consistently, but I can't recall many others off the top of my head who have made a significant impact.

Augustana had 3 D1 transfers on their roster this season QB Casey Bauman, Montana St., RB Rashad Lampkin, E. IL St. and LB Kade Lynott, Iowa St. Lynott's case AU recruited him out HS as he a local young man from Hawarden Ia. He chose to walk on at Ia St. Terrific players all 3.
