Some observations and musings based on what I observed in Week 1:
- CSUP was somewhat overrated against an underrated Ft. Hays. Let's see how they do against Central Missouri next week, which should be a good test and a chance for them to redeem themselves. After Central Missouri, CSUP should cruise until Oct 18 against BHSU and Nov 1 against Western.
- Western performed well again. Western doesn't have another real test until Oct 11 against BHSU which just put in a very impressive performance against GVSU in Michigan.
- Mines barely won on some spotty defense (no red zone stops) and failure to capitalize on offense a couple times. But for a first start, Capra was good and Walker came through like a champ. Not sure if Flynn Schiele is out for a while or just the game. Comparing MInes with Western's win against West Texas A&M, I'd say they played about on par with Western. Remember Western only pulled their game out in the fourth quarter at home, whereas this was played in West Texas. Next week Washburn comes to Golden, but they aren't the same team that nearly beat Mines last year, so looking for the Orediggers to cruise unitl Sep 27 against BHSU and then Oct 25 against Western.
- Adams State seems much improved from last year but still not in the mix.
- NMHU has an incredible running back. Have to see how they do against the top teams. Should be competitive but probably not enough all around to beat the top teams.
- Chadron was competitive for much of the game against Kearney but still seems to have some growing to do.
- SD Mines looks weak this year.
- Ft. Lewis has a decent QB but still probably in the cellar.
- Looks to me like a dogfight this year among CSUP, Western, and MInes with possibly BHSU a dark horse contender based on their GVSU performance.
- Also, for the LSC, look out for West Texas A&M after the way they competed with Western and Mines. They have a solid team and a great QB. The QB's passing game at the start of the game reminded me a bit of Matocha.
