CSUP, Western, and Chadron drew the easy games this week and rolled up the points:
- CSUP 77 New Mexico Highlands 17 reminiscent of the way Mines used to roll them in the Matocha era.
- Western 55 Fort Lewis 0, same comment. Note that Mines beat Fort Lewis in Golden 34-3 this year.
- Chadron 69 Adams State 0. Chadron making up for a disappointing season.
Only two games were interesting with BHSU getting the best of SD MInes in the Black Hills Brawl. BHSU started strong and looked like they might run away but SD Mines made them work for the win in the end.
Colorado Mines bested Mesa in the Nyikos Cup but almost let it slip away. Mines looked strong with a two TD lead 31-17 but instead of practicing ball control and marching down the field again for a three score margin, they tried four passing bombs trying to put it away, only to punt it away and give the competent Mesa team another drive for a TD making it a one score game. Not sure who is calling offence for the Orediggers this season, but it's a bit dicey.
The best is yet to come with Western yet to be tested by Colorado Mines and CSUP to see who comes out on top. CSUP looks solid and Western hasn't really shown any cracks this year either.
