No terrible surprises in this week's MIAA action, as the league's top teams all found ways to win, whether it be by blowing out their opponents or sneaking out with a last minute victory.
That's what good teams do. And for this week at least, it looked like Northwest, Washburn, Pitt State, Missouri Western and Central Missouri are ALL good teams.
Unfortunately, bad teams find ways to lose, and that's what happened this week as well. Emporia blew an 18 point lead, Missouri Southern gave up 20 unanswered to lose a game they could have won, Truman State didn't go for 2 and it cost them, Lincoln is Lincoln and Fort Hays wasted another positive performance on many fronts by losing to past & future conference foe Southwest Baptist.
Now, are all these teams "bad" teams? Perhaps not, but they clearly showed signs of badness yesterday.
I don't like calling out coaches. I've never been one to do so, but Truman should have gone for two when they scored with just over a minute left to go up 25-20. Head coach Greg Nesbitt is quoted as saying he "trusted his defense" so he didn't go for 2. It doesn't matter how much you trust your defense, if you're up five, you go for 2. Any time, anywhere, against any team. Plain and simple.
Regardless, that game in Kirksville was AMAZING. Pitt fought back from an early 13-0 deficit and drove the length of the field in well under a minute to remain unblemished on the young season.
Here's my picks for MIAA players of the week:
Offense: Jamar Howard WR UCM - 9 catches, 230 yards, 2 TDs. I haven't seen a guy look this dominant since the last time somebody wore #1 for UCM (last year, Jamorris Warren was numero uno).
Defense: Nate Dreiling LB PSU - 10 tackles, 2 INTs, 1 pass break up. It looks like his freshman season was no fluke
Special Teams - Jon Thomas WR/KR PSU -3 kick returns, 144 yards, including a 91 yard TD to get Pitt on the board down 13-0. Also added 5 catches for 51 yards.
