Well, my gamble for the cookies by picking FIT didn't pan out. But, looking at the results, I wouldn't have made a play for the top of the list anyway. I was 4-1 on the week in my predictions and that makes me 43-8 on the year.
GSC Week-in-Review
Blazer 36, Braves 7 - This was as expected. VSU methodically controlled the game and got the victory up in North Carolina. They had 324 yards and 29 points in the first half alone.
Wolves 49, Panthers 35 - This was a back-and-forth contest and a battle to the finish. Some fumbles and weird calls early from FIT made me think it was going to be over quickly, but the Panthers hung around and made it a good game.
Lions 45, Hawks 7 - This game was never in question and the only SU score came on a UNA punting miscue. The UNA defense played lights out.
Statesmen 73, Hornets 6 - No words. Not sure these games benefit the team or conference at this point.
Tigers 41, Choctaws 28 - The biggest surprise here is how long MC hung around and how many points they scored (twice as much as they have against any NCAA school this year). I think this is a sign that the Choctaws are improving because of their season of play in the GSC. But, Caldwell and company took care of business.
GSC Conference Standings
With one week left we have a tie for the lead in the Gulf South Conference. If both teams win this weekend, they will be the 2014 GSC Co-Champions. Yet, if both of them were to slip up, two teams are tied for third and would gladly share in the title. There are no tiebreakers in GSC rankings.
1. Delta State (5-1)
1. North Alabama (5-1)
3. Valdosta State (4-2)
3. West Georgia (4-2)
5. Florida Tech (3-3)
6. West Alabama (2-4)
7. Shorter (1-5)
8. Mississippi College (0-6)
SR2 Regional Rankings
There is movement near the top of this week's regional rankings for Super Region Two as Tuskegee jumped UNA. The GSC is represented again by five teams and that is more than any other conference in the county.
One has to imagine that if the top six teams win they will make the playoff field. Yet, Tuskegee does have a big game against #7 Albany State for the SIAC title. A win by the Rams will throw an interesting wrench into all of this. Also, L-R, UNA, and Valdosta face capable opponents and could be in for very competitive games.
If the playoffs started this week, West Georgia would travel to face Tuskegee and UNA would host Valdosta in the first round. The following week would feature the UWG/TU winner traveling to Delta State and the UNA/VSU winner venturing to Lenior-Rhyne.
1. Lenior-Rhyne
2. Delta State
3. Tuskegee
4. North Alabama
5. Valdosta State
6. West Georgia
7. Albany State
8. Miles
9. Carson-Newman
10. Florida Tech
