Kind of a bizarre weekend, wasn't it?
Cheyney won; California lost. Mercyhurst went to OT with Notre Dame (not the good one). And Lock Haven didn't lose.
Food for thought:
-- California's loss isn't really that surprising. The Vulcans played a hell of a good team (St. Cloud State) and didn't appear all that prepared. John Luckhardt said he scheduled the Huskies because he wants his team to see what the big boys look like, and he got that. It's only one game, and Cal can still have an ouststanding season despite a 23-point loss.
-- Cheyney's win over Lincoln is big, and not just from the standpoint that the Wolves are 1-0 for the first time in Lord-knows how long, and that interim coach Kenneth Lockard can boast that he's undefeated as a head coach. It's a big win because it came against Lincoln. The Philly-area schools have begun quite a rivalry the last few seasons and having the upper hand, for now, will help Cheyney in its recruiting efforts.
-- Millersville's 55-3 loss to West Virginia Wesleyan is shocking. The Marauders should have been better than that. But if last week's game is an indication of what Millersville is (or isn't) capable of, then this week's game at Lock Haven is probably the Marauders' best hope for a win this season. Should Millersville lose to Lock Haven, the Marauders could be in for a horrendous season.
--Speaking of Millersville, anyone ever heard of a team opening with five straight road games?
-- A couple interesting story lines for Saturday's IUP-East Stroudsburg game: East Stroudsburg coach Denny Douds will be making the trip to his hometown, Indiana. Douds has coached games in Indiana six times, but left with a win only twice. And Curt Cignetti, who was 13 when Douds was hired at ESU, will be making his debut as IUP's coach. He's taking over the program his father, Frank, built into a national powerhouse in the 1980s and 90s.
-- Slippery Rock's demolition of Seton Hill isn't that surprising. But that The Rock did it by having new quarterback Cody Endres throw the ball 13 times is. I figured SRU would become a passing team with Endres' arrival, but when you factor in that Seton Hill couldn't stop the run, it sort of makes sense.
-- Most impressive team of the week: Bloomsburg. No matter who they play, the Huskies always show up.
-- Least impressive team of the week: Millersville. Not much to say there.
-- MVP of the week: East Stroudsburg QB Ray Wagner. The fifth-year senior made his starting debut in style, passing for 375 yards and six touchdowns against Pace. Oh, and he didn't throw a pass in the second half. Entering the game, he had career totals of 571 yards and 14 touchdowns.

At a minimum, ESU has 3 home games in a row early in the season, but last 3 on road (CW Post, Millersville, Mercyhurst).
