    Wildcat women cruise past Peru State 88-48

    Freshmen Halley Busse and Haley Vesey combined for 34 points to lead Wayne State College in a 88-48 non-conference women's basketball victory Friday evening over Peru State College at Rice Auditorium in Wayne. The Wildcats improved to 5-3 on the year while the game was an exhibition contest for the 3-4 Bobcats.

    Wayne State never trailed in the contest as the Wildcat bench produced 60 of the team's 88 points in the win.

    WSC led 8-4 early and Peru State got within one at 8-7 following a Abigail Niebrugge 3-pointer. WSC then scored the next eight points and took their first double-digit lead at 19-9 on an Evelyn Knox 3-pointer with 1:54 to play first quarter.

    The Wildcats finished the first quarter with a 26-12 lead and outscored the Bobcats 18-15 in the second quarter to build a 44-27 lead at intermission.

    Wayne State opened the second half with a 16-4 run to take a commanding 60-31 lead with 3:24 to play third quarter and finished the stanza with a 66-36 lead.

    Reserves dominated play in the final 10 minutes with the Wildcats holding a 22-12 advantage in scoring over Peru State to finish the contest with a 88-48 win.

    Wayne State was 33-of-66 shooting in the contest for 50 percent, going 11-of-31 from 3-point range and 11-of-17 at the free throw line.

    Freshman guard Halley Busse led the Wildcats with 20 points, going 7-of-7 from the field (3-of-3 from behind the arc) and 3-of-5 at the charity stripe. Freshman Haley Vesey also reached double figures with 14 points going 4-of-8 from 3-point range.

    Peru State connected on 17-of-49 shots from the field and was 8-of-20 from the 3-point line. The Bobcats made 6-of-10 free throws.

    Wayne State outrebounded the Bobcats 49-22 thanks to six boards each from Maggie Schulte, Paige Ballinger, Taylor Wangerin and Brittany Bongartz. The Wildcats had 10 turnovers while forcing 17 on the Bobcats.

    Amanda Brainerd, Busse and Anna Eckert each had three assists while Busse was also credited with four steals. Ballinger and Wangerin each had two blocked shots.

    Wayne State will be at home again Sunday afternoon, hosting UC-Colorado Springs in a non-conference game starting at 2 p.m. at Rice Auditorium.

          Big Second Half Carries WSC Men Past NYIT at Sanford Pentagon Showcase

          Wayne State junior Kendall Jacks scored 17 of his game-high 20 points in the second half as the Wildcats outscored New York Institute of Technology 48-31 in the second half to pull away for a 78-57 victory over the Bears Saturday morning at the Sanford Pentagon Showcase in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. WSC is now 4-1 on the year while NYIT drops to 2-2.

          The first half was close between the two teams featuring seven ties and six lead changes. After NYIT took an 8-4 lead (biggest lead of the game) at the 16:28 mark of the first half, WSC stormed back and knotted the score at 10-10 following a Tony Bonner 3-point play and pushed the lead to five at 17-12 on a Luke TerHark layup at the 12:17 mark.

          The Bears responded and tied the game at 17-17 with the two teams trading ties several times before NYIT took their final lead of the game at 24-22 on a Arvelle Jones III 3-pointer with 5:13 to play in the half. WSC took the lead for good following four straight points from Bonner and 28-24 and finished the first half with a 30-26 lead.

          Wayne State picked up the tempo in the second half and had as many points at the under 10 media timeout (30) as the Wildcats scored in the entire first half (30), leading to a 48-31 scoring advantage over the Bears in the second half, as WSC pulled away for the 78-57 win.

          NYIT was within three at 34-31 two minutes into the second half, but WSC scored the next eight points to take their first double-digit lead at 45-34 following a Jacks layup with 13:59 remaining.

          The Bears were trailing 51-42 at the 11:32 mark when WSC put the game out of reach with the next nine points for a commanding 60-42 lead with 9:38 to play. NYIT never got closer than 14 the rest of the game.

          Wayne State shot 65.5 percent in the second half (19-29) and finished the game making 29 of 57 shots for 50.9 percent. The 'Cats were 6 of 14 behind the arc and 14 for 23 (60.9%) at the free throw line.

          Jacks recorded 17 of his game-high 20 points in the second half to lead Wayne State in scoring, going 8 for 11 from the field. Sophomore reserve center Tony Bonner added 19 points with 13 coming in the first half. Junior reserve guard Trevin Joseph also hit double figures with 10 points.

          Jeffrey Hayden was the lone player for New York Institute of Technology in double figures with 16 points.

          The Bears shot 22 of 63 for the game (34.9%), going 4 for 12 behind the arc and 9 of 17 at the foul stripe.

          WSC held a 41-36 advantage in rebounding thanks to nine caroms from Austin Esters with Jacks adding seven.

          The Wildcats had 17 turnovers in the game to 16 on NYIT.

          Jacks had four of Wayne State's 16 assists while Joseph was credited with a team-high three steals.

          The Wildcats play Missouri Southern Sunday evening in a 7:30 p.m. contest at the Sanford Pentagon Showcase in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

            Buzzer-Beater Gives Missouri Southern 79-77 win over Wildcats

            Missouri Southern's Braelon Walker made a layup with 0.8 seconds to play giving the Lions a 79-77 victory over Wayne State College Sunday evening at the Sanford Pentagon Showcase in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. MSSU is now 2-3 on the season while WSC falls to 4-2.

            The game was tightly contested throughout with neither team holding a lead of more than five points until 4:24 left in the contest. The two teams exchanged 15 ties and 10 lead changes in the contest.

            Missouri Southern took its biggest lead of the first half at five (23-18) with 9:15 to play. WSC went on a 13-3 run over the next 4:20 and took their biggest lead of the first half at 31-26 following a Kendall Jacks 3-point play with 4:55 to play before halftime.

            WSC still held a 36-32 lead at the 1:36 mark of the first half before the Lions tied the game at 36-36 heading into halftime.

            The contest remained close until Missouri Southern used a late scoring surge to take its biggest lead of the game, 72-64 with 1:55 to play.

            WSC held a 62-60 lead after a Jacks jumper with 6:48 remaining. The Lions then went on a 10-0 run over the next 3:11 to take a 70-62 lead with 3:37 to play.

            Trailing by eight (72-64) with 1:55 remaining, the Wildcats rallied and knotted the score at 77-77 on a Trevin Joseph 3-pointer with 5.3 seconds to play. But Missouri Southern's Braelon Walker drove the length of the floor and made a running layup from the left side of the basket with 0.8 seconds remaining to give Missouri Southern the 79-77 win.

            Jacks led Wayne State in scoring with 23 points on 8 of 11 shooting from the field and 5 for 6 at the free throw line. Junior guard Vance Janssen contributed 16 points on 6 of 12 shooting while Trevin Joseph and Austin Esters also hit double figures with 11 and 10 points respectively.

            Wayne State made 27 of 60 shots for 45 percent, including 9 for 22 from the 3-point line. The Wildcats were 14 of 17 at the free throw line.

            Kinzer Lambert paced Missouri Southern with 22 points with Elyjah Clark adding 19. Enis Memic also hit double digits with 12 points.

            Missouri Southern shot 52 percent for the game on 26 of 50 that included 2 for 13 from the 3-point line. The Lions were 25 for 34 at the charity stripe.

            MSSU held a 35-24 advantage in rebounding over WSC thanks to nine boards from Lambert while Jacks grabbed five caroms for the Wildcats.

            WSC had just nine turnovers in the game to 12 on MSSU. Janssen and Joseph each had two assists for the Wildcats while Janssen and Matt Thomas were both credited with two steals.

            Wayne State returns to Northern Sun Conference play next weekend with road trips to Minnesota State Friday at 8 p.m. and Concordia-St. Paul Saturday at 6 p.m.

              Wildcats lead from start to finish in 74-51 win over UC-Colorado Springs

              Wayne State College led from start to finish, building a 22-8 first quarter lead, as the Wildcats defeated UC-Colorado Springs 74-51 Sunday afternoon in non-conference women's college basketball played at Rice Auditorium in Wayne. The host Wildcats improve to 6-3 on the year while the visiting Mountain Lions drop to 0-5.

              The Wildcats never trailed in the contest, building a 15-4 lead less than seven minutes into the contest. WSC ended the first quarter with a 22-8 lead thanks to 7 of 12 shooting (58.3%) in the opening 10 minutes.

              WSC maintained a double-digit lead throughout the second quarter and finished the first half with their biggest lead of the half at 42-23 following a layup by freshman Erin Norling to end the half.

              Wayne State held an 18-13 scoring advantage in the third quarter and led 60-36 entering the fourth quarter as reserves closed out the contest with the Wildcats winning 74-51.

              Norling led 12 different Wildcat players who scored in the contest with a game-high 15 points, going 6 of 7 from the field and 3 for 4 at the charity stripe. Freshman reserve center Brittany Bongartz also hit double digits with 13 points thanks to 5 of 8 from the field and 3 of 5 at the free throw line.

              Wayne State shot 49 percent from the field making 25 of 51 shots, but was just 2 of 13 from the 3-point line. The Wildcats were 22 for 30 at the free throw line for 73.3 percent.

              Shanah Leaf was the lone player for UC-Colorado Springs in double figures with 11 points followed by Maddie Golla with nine.

              The Mountain Lions made 22 of 60 shots from the field for 36.7 percent, including 2 for 13 behind the arc. UCCS was just 5 of 9 at the free throw line.

              WSC won the rebounding battle over UCCS 43-27 thanks to nine caroms from Maggie Schulte and six by Andrea Larson. The Wildcats held a 40-14 edge on points in the paint and 14-6 in points off turnovers. WSC was charged with 16 turnovers to 14 on the Mountain Lions.

              Freshman guard Halley Busse had six of Wayne State's 15 assists and also led the team in steals with three.

              The Wildcats return to Northern Sun Conference play next weekend with road trips to Minnesota State Friday night at 6 p.m. and Concordia-St. Paul Saturday in a 4 p.m. contest.

                After reading in the box score that the Wayne-MoSo game was officiated by Tommy Mauer, Isaiah Conrad, and Bill Fisher I can totally understand why Kaminsky got ejected.

                  Fourth quarter scoring surge gives WSC 75-68 win over Mary -- Kielsmeier collects 400th career win

                  Wayne State opened the fourth quarter on a 15-1 scoring surge to snap a 53-53 tie as the Wildcats went on to defeat the University of Mary 75-68 in a Northern Sun Conference women's basketball game played Friday evening at Rice Auditorium in Wayne. The win also marked the 400th career coaching victory for Wildcat head coach Chris Kielsmeier, who is now 400-112 in his 18th season of coaching (221-68 at WSC, and 179-44 at Howard Payne).

                  With the win, the Wildcats improve to 9-3 overall and 3-1 in the NSIC while the Marauders drop to 4-6 and 0-4 in league play.

                  Neither team led by more than three points in a tightly contested first quarter that saw the visiting Marauders hold a 22-21 lead after 10 minutes.

                  The second quarter was more of the same as the two teams traded three lead changes with four more ties.

                  With the game tied for the 11th time at 32-32, WSC used a 3-pointer from Maggie Lowe and a layup from Brittany Bongartz to give the 'Cats a 37-36 lead at intermission.

                  Mary opened the third quarter with five straight points to take their biggest lead at 41-37, but WSC came back and used five straight points from Paige Ballinger and a jumper from Amanda Brainerd to take a 44-43 lead.

                  The two teams traded more lead changes and ties with the third quarter ending on the 16th and final tie of the contest at 53-53.

                  WSC then used a 15-1 scoring surge to start the fourth quarter, resulting in a 66-54 lead with 6:37 to play.

                  After the Wildcats took their biggest lead of the night at 14 (68-54), Mary made one last run at WSC and got as close as six at 72-66 with 1:30 remaining. WSC sealed the win with one free throw from Kacie O'Connor and two more from Maggie Schulte to make the final score 75-68.

                  Schulte led Wayne State in scoring with 19 points followed by freshman reserve center Brittany Bongartz with 17.

                  Wayne State made 28 of 65 shots from the field for 43.1 percent, going just 2 of 10 behind the arc. The 'Cats were 17 for 22 (77.3%) at the free throw line.

                  Gabbie Bohl scored a game-high 21 points to lead the University of Mary in scoring. Lauren Rotunda added 19 points with Cassie Askvig accounting for a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

                  Mary held a 38-32 advantage in rebounding over the Wildcats. Bongartz and Erin Norling each grabbed seven boards for WSC.

                  The Wildcats had just 10 turnovers compared to 21 on Mary, resulting in a 24-11 advantage for Wayne State in points off turnovers. Schulte had six of Wayne State's 18 assists in the game followed by Halley Busse and Maggie Lowe with four each. Lowe and Schulte were each credited with three steals.

                  The Wildcats will be at home again Saturday afternoon hosting Minot State in a 4 p.m. contest at Rice Auditorium.

                    Season-high 20 points from Jordan Cornelius powers WSC men past Mary

                    Senior forward Jordan Cornelius poured in a season-high 20 points on 8 of 10 shooting from the field to lead Wayne State College in a 85-63 Northern Sun Conference men's basketball victory over the University of Mary Friday night at Rice Auditorium in Wayne. The host Wildcats move to 7-3 overall and 3-1 in league play with the visiting Marauders falling to 2-6 and 0-4 in the NSIC.

                    Cornelius got WSC off to a fast start, scoring 10 of the first 12 points, giving the Wildcats a 12-2 lead just 5:22 into the contest.

                    Mary got as close as six at 18-12 at the 9:37 mark, but the Wildcats reeled off 10 straight points to push the advantage to 28-12.

                    But the Marauders closed the half strong and cut a 13-point deficit (36-23) down to four at 36-32 before finishing the first half trailing WSC 39-33.

                    Wayne State opened the second half on a 10-2 run, taking a 49-35 lead following a Kendall Jacks jumper at the 15:18 mark. The Wildcats increased the lead to 20 at 63-43 and led by double digits the rest of the way in finishing with the 85-63 win.

                    Cornelius paced WSC with his season-high 20 points, going 8 for 10 from the field and 4 of 6 behind the arc. Jacks finished with 15 points while Vance Janssen also hit double figures with 13.

                    Wayne State shot a season-high 59.6 percent from the field making 31 of 52 shots. The 'Cats matched a season-high with 11 3-pointers, going 11 of 23 behind the arc. WSC was also 12 of 14 at the free throw line.

                    Trevor Zacher scored 16 points for Mary while Brody Sharkey and Connor Hellebust also reached double figures with 11 and 10 respectively.

                    The Marauders shot 39.3 percent from the field making 22 of 56 shots. Mary was 8 for 23 from 3-point range and 11 for 19 at the free throw line.

                    WSC won the rebounding battle over Mary 36-25 thanks to eight boards from Brian Goodwin and six by Jacks. Mary's top rebounders were Jaylan White, Connor Hellebust and Brody Sharkey with four each.

                    Jacks was credited with six of Wayne State's 21 assists followed by Austin Esters with four.

                    Wayne State will be home again Saturday evening welcoming Minot State to Rice Auditorium for a NSIC contest starting at 6 p.m.

                      Can't say we learned anything more about the team in last night's easy win vs Mt Marty, but the few people in attendance did get to witness one of the finest dunks ever seen in Rice Auditorium.
