How did the MSSU defense handle Pitts? Man to man with the same guy shadowing him all night, a variety of guys, did they zone? Did they make a conscious effort to stay home on his teammates and "let" Pitts get his?
They mauled him all night long. He should have spend half the night at the foul line.

You NSIC folks scoffed at me when I posted this would happen. Shame on you!

I believe most of us scoffed at the idea that NWMSU wouldn't win the National Championship, even if they suffered a loss. That being said, maybe that's some revisionist history and we scoffed at the idea of them losing at all. Either way, I don't think this changes the likelihood that NWMSU will still be traveling to Sioux Falls for the Elite Eight in a few months. Unless MSSU makes the Regional and knocks them off. :)

Maybe one of the NSIC schools that makes the Regional will volunteer as tribute and sacrifice themselves so MSSU can step in and take down the Bearcats in their stead. I nominate Northern State.

It's a positive but them losing to MSSU, by standings comparison, is the same as NSU losing to Augie or maybe Winona on the road...its more than possible. While this helps NSU, I don't think it would put them above NWMSU if the regional rankings came out today.

I had everything planned to go home for the Augie game, unfortunately my work decided to schedule a mandatory meeting for two hours up in Fargo that day with Christmas party to follow that night. I will fulfill the meeting portion and now try to reason the wife into them rushing to Aberdeen in time for the mens tip off. (Very doubtful)

All the Wolves can do is take care of business each weekend. We can't go back in time and play better against NW, so it kind of us what it is...

I believe we were talking about the title, but if you'd like to prove us "correct" a couple more times this year that'd be just fine. Aberdeen will provide an incredible atmosphere of the biggest regional crowd this region has ever played in front of, besides, NWMSU did just fine the last time they play in Wachs Arena. I don't think the janitors have ever gotten all the marks off the floor from all that floor slapping that took place.

I am probably wrong on this one, but when I look at teams resumes, especially when it is entirely possible that each of these teams has only the 1 loss come time for the regional, I look at it this way: We lost to NWMSU and they lost to an obviously weaker team, their loss should be more damaging and we should take that top spot. Again, others may place more on the fact that they beat us head to head and say in a 30 game season anyone can get caught on a bad night, but you should get up for the big games, so those carry more weight.

I'm no guru on committees and Northern never seems to have any friends on them, but I'm assuming in region record, sos, and then head to head is what matters. Considering how the NSIC did against the MIAA I don't think the SOS will be in out favor, especially with NWMSU getting Lincoln Memorial.

Putting the cart before the horse. A lot of basketball yet to be played. But if both teams do miraculously somehow end up with only one loss I imagine the regional will be in Maryville.

Not sure if the LM game counts in their record. Just wondering again about the NCAA rule for games vs out of region games, or regions not touching your region.

I don't think even the committee knows.

I honestly don't know but I thought there was something along the lines of: if the team plays in a state/region that borders your region/state then it would count as an in region game. If that's accurate or somewhat close then it satisfies the criteria for in region.

As was mentioned above, there are still a lot of games left to be played but if the season ended today, I believe the H2H holds enough weight to put the Regional in Maryville. Obviously, a lot can happen between now and mid- March.

I know that used to be true in football.

How does MSSU go from losing to an average NAIA team at home to beating Northwest in the same week?

That is definitely true in sports like baseball and softball since weather plays a major factor in scheduling games and softball nonconference tournaments make up for half their schedules. However, when the subjective nature of the committee comes in -- which it inevitably does to break ties and making an effort to avoid conference teams playing each other in the first round (except apparently for the NSIC in volleyball) -- the Lincoln Memorial win and NWMSU's H2H win over Northern would trump even a two-loss difference in Northern and NWMSU's resumes.

I don't think the conference H2H results matter as much as many people think they do. The committee likes to keep SOS relative to each individual team, not one conference being "better" than the other. I have no clue how good the MIAA is this year (I did see MoSo beat Wayne State at the Buzzer in Sioux Falls though -- can't pass up an opportunity to see Jeff Boschee in person <3 ) but I *do* know that Northern's demise will be the NSIC north division schedule they face. As improved as the north division may be, eight wins over Mary, Moorhead (lol), Duluth and Bemidji won't carry much weight, and I think they'll get clipped by a couple NSIC south teams or St. Cloud once. They are very fortunate that Crookston and Minot are as good as they are this year or else this down year for Moorhead (lol) would kill their SOS. NWMSU has a pretty healthy cushion over Northern right now.

That said, I hope both both Northern and Northwest never win again, but that's impossible because they have the two best cultures in their respective leagues.
