Wildcats hold off second-half Midland rally for 70-66 men's exhibition win

Wayne State College made 14-of-16 free throws in the second half while sophomore Kendall Jacks poured in a team-high 20 points as the Wildcats held off a second-half rally to defeat Midland University 70-66 in a men's college basketball exhibition game played Tuesday evening at Rice Auditorium in Wayne.

Midland scored the opening four points of the game, but WSC held the lead for the remainder of the first half while building a 35-26 halftime advantage.

A pair of Jacks free throws at the 7:55 mark of the first half gave the 'Cats their first double-digit lead of the night at 24-14. WSC led by as many as 13 in the first half at 29-16 following a Ben Hoskins 3-pointer. After Midland cut the lead to seven at 33-26, the Wildcats used a Matt Thomas layup on the final play of the first half for a 35-26 lead at intermission.

Wayne State pushed the lead to 11 a couple of times early in the second half until Midland made a run and took the lead from the Wildcats.

An Austin Esters layup gave WSC a 44-33 lead with 12:28 to play. Midland then went on a 14-2 run over the next 3:16 and took a 47-46 lead on a Diamontae McKinley layup with 9:12 remaining.

The Warriors pushed their lead to five at 57-52 on an Alex Starkel layup at the 5:11 mark when WSC scored the following eight points to regain the lead for good.

A three point play by Vance Janssen put the 'Cats in front 60-57 with 2:01 to play. Midland got as close as one at 60-59, but WSC sank 8-of-10 free throws down the stretch and got a key layup from Thomas with 38 seconds remaining to hang on for the 70-66 win.

Wayne State ended the game making 21-of-49 shots for 42.9 percent including 6-of-17 behind the arc. The 'Cats were 22-of-29 at the free throw line including 14-of-16 in the second half.

Kendal Jacks led WSC in scoring with 20 points followed by Vance Janssen and Jordan Cornelius with 10 apiece.

Midland University was 24-of-49 from the floor (49%) and just 4-of-17 from 3-point range. The Warriors were 14-of-21 at the foul line. Damon Overton led the Warriors with a game-high 21 points followed by Diamontae McKinley (13), Alex Starkel (12) and Don Henderson (10).

Midland out-rebounded WSC 35-27 thanks to 11 caroms from Henderson while Cornelius hauled in eight rebounds for Wayne State. Midland had 21 turnovers in the game to 14 on WSC. Janssen had four of Wayne State's 11 assists to go with two steals along with Cornelius.

Wayne State will travel to Omaha Friday evening for a 7 p.m. exhibition game at Creighton University.

Considering Midland was preseason #2 in the GPAC, this is actually a pretty decent win for the WSC men. It was good to see Jacks back on the floor after missing all of last year with injury. The defensive effort and organization was better throughout. Just one game, and a game that doesn't count, but I see the faintest glimmer of hope. There remain many obvious weaknesses and Wayne remains far from the top conference programs, but perhaps if things break right they can compete with the middle tier teams this year. If so, it would be a sign of progress.

Creighton downs WSC 93-46 in men's exhibition game

Creighton had five players score in double figures as the #22 and #23 ranked Bluejays downed Wayne State College 93-46 in a men's college basketball exhibition game played before a crowd of 15,128 at CenturyLink Center in Omaha. This was the lone exhibition game for the Bluejays while WSC is now 1-1 in exhibition games before opening the regular season next Friday evening, November 11th at Missouri Western.

Creighton scored the first 13 points of the game while holding WSC scoreless until almost six minutes into the contest with tenacious defense against the Wildcats.

A Tony Bonner layup at the 14:02 mark was Wayne State's first basket of the game after starting 0 for 6 from the field.

The Wildcats then settled into the flow of the game and started making shots as Luke TerHark and Jordan Cornelius hit 3-pointers allowing WSC to pull within eight at 20-12 at the 10:55 mark of the first half.

Creighton went on a 10-0 run over the next 1:52 to take a 30-12 lead and scored 16 consecutive points before the Wildcats ended the scoreless drought. Back-to-back 3-pointers from redshirt freshman Ben Hoskins snapped a 3:52 stretch without a point for the Wildcats, making the score 38-18.

The Bluejays closed the first half with a 13-2 run over the final 5:54 to take a 51-20 lead at intermission.

Wayne State battled the Bluejays close for the first segment of the second half as Creighton held a 16-14 scoring advantage at the second media timeout of the half. Junior guard Brian Goodwin scored eight straight points for the 'Cats on a trio of free throws, a 3-pointer and a pair of free throws to make the score 63-32 at the 15:08 mark.

Freshman Joshua Lane and Cornelius hit back-to-back 3-pointers for WSC to make the score 75-40, but WSC was held scoreless for the next 5:32 until Bonner put in a basket on an offensive rebound for the Wildcats as Creighton went on to finish with the 93-46 win.

Junior Jordan Cornelius led Wayne State in scoring with 13 points followed by Brian Goodwin and Tony Bonner with eight points each.

Wayne State finished the game making 14 of 51 shots for 27.5 percent, going 8 for 29 behind the 3-point line and 10 of 19 (52.6 percent) at the free throw line.

Marcus Foster led five Creighton players in double figures with 13 points. Khyri Thomas, Martin Krampelj and Maurice Watson Jr. each produced 11 points followed by Ronnie Harrell Jr. with 10.

The Bluejays made 35 of 65 shots from the field for 53.8 percent, goiong 8 of 21 from the 3-point line and 15 for 22 (68.2%) at the charity stripe.

Creighton held a commanding 52-23 advantage in rebounding on the Wildcats thanks to eight boards from Harrell Jr. while Kendall Jacks, JJ Zumbrennen and Bonner each hauled in four rebounds for the Wildcats.

WSC had just 11 turnovers in the game compared to eight on Creighton

WSC men open season with 70-57 road win at Missouri Western, snapping 17-game road losing skid

Wayne State College used a game-high 16 points from junior guard Brian Goodwin to lead the Wildcats in a season opening 70-57 men's college basketball win Friday evening at Missouri Western in the 25th annual Hillyard Tip-Off Classic in St. Joseph, Missouri. The win snapped a 17-game road losing streak for the Wildcats dating back to January 30, 2015 (77-75 win at Mary) and gives WSC a 1-0 record while Missouri Western is 0-1.

Missouri Western held a commanding 22-4 advantage on points in the paint over the Wildcats in the first half and held a 30-29 lead at intermission.

The host Griffons took an early 8-2 lead, but Goodwin produced back-to-back treys to even the score at 8-8. After Missouri Western took an 18-12 lead for its biggest lead of the first half at the 7:43 mark, WSC battled back and took a 21-20 lead on a Tony Bonner layup with 4:43 remaining in the half.

WSC held a pair of three point leads, but Missouri Western closed the half with the final four points for a 30-29 lead at halftime.

The Wildcats opened the second half scoring nine straight points to take the lead for good. A Goodwin jumper, layups from Vance Janssen and Austin Esters and a Goodwin 3-pointer put WSC in front 38-30.

After the Griffons closed to within two at 42-40 at the 12:47 mark, WSC reeled off the next nine points and took a 51-40 lead on a JJ Zumbrennen 3-pointer with 10:11 to play.

The Griffons closed within seven at 51-44 but that is as close as the hosts would get as the Wildcats pushed the lead back to double figures for the final eight minutes to finish with the 70-57 win.

Goodwin was the lone Wildcat in double figures with 16 points followed by Kendall Jacks, Matt Thomas and Austin Esters with nine apiece.

WSC shot 26 of 63 from the field for 41.3 percent, including 8 for 23 behind the 3-point line. The Wildcats were just 10 for 19 at the free throw line.

Cole Clearman paced Missouri Western with 15 points while Seth Bonifas and Beau Baker each reached double digits with 12 and 10 points respectively.

Missouri Western was 24 of 56 from the floor for 42.9 percent. The Griffons were just 2 of 13 behind the arc and 7 of 11 at the charity stripe.

WSC won the rebounding battle over Missouri Western 42-35 thanks to six rebounds each from Jordan Cornelius and Esters. The Wildcats had just eight turnovers in the game with 16 assists as Thomas handed out five and Jacks four to lead the 'Cats.

Wayne State will play another game at the Hillyard Tip-Off Classic Sunday afternoon battling #6 Northwest Missouri State in a 1:30 p.m. contest.

Larson's career-high 15 points off bench spark WSC women in 69-55 season-opening win over UNK

Sophomore forward Andrea Larson ignited Wayne State off the bench with a career-high 15 points and the Wildcats held Nebraska-Kearney to just 28.8 percent shooting as the Wildcats downed the Lopers 69-56 in the women's college basketball opener for both teams Saturday evening at Rice Auditorium in Wayne. WSC, now 100-9 in Rice Auditorium over the last eight seasons, is 1-0 while UNK slips to 0-1.

The Wildcats got off to a sluggish start, never holding a lead in the first quarter. WSC made just two baskets in the first quarter and trailed 12-4 with 1:19 left in the first quarter until the Wildcats got four straight free throws from junior Paige Ballinger to cut UNK's lead to 12-8 after one quarter.

WSC and UNK went back and forth in the second quarter featuring six ties and 11 lead changes, but it was the play of Larson off the bench late in the second quarter that sparked the Wildcats to a 34-29 halftime lead.

The Wildcats scored the first seven points of the second quarter and took their first lead of the game at 15-12 on a Haley Moore 3-pointer. UNK battled back and held a 26-24 lead at the 3:00 mark in the first half.

Larson then took over for the Wildcats and eight points at the end of the half, including six in the final 1:59 to give Wayne State a 34-29 lead at intermission. Another key for WSC in the second quarter surge was 11 of 12 free throw shooting for the 'Cats.

WSC pushed the lead to nine early in the third stanza on a Haley Moore trey, putting the 'Cats ahead 41-32 with 5:13 to play in the quarter. After UNK got within four at 41-37, WSC closed the quarter strong and used a Maggie Lowe 3-pointer to end the third quarter for a 49-40 Wildcat advantage.

The Wildcats pushed the lead to 12 at 53-41 following an Anna Martensen layup. UNK got as close as seven at 53-46, but WSC answered with a Martensen layup and a Moore 3 to push the lead back to 12 (58-46) with just under five minutes to play and the Wildcats held off the Lopers with 9 of 12 free throw shooting in the fourth quarter to post the 69-56 win.

Wayne State made 20 of 43 shots from the field for 46.5 percent, including 4 of 7 from 3-point range. The 'Cats were 25 for 30 (83.3 percent) at the free throw line.

Maggie Schulte led three double digit scorers for Wayne State with 19 points and eight rebounds. Larson followed with an efficient 15-point night in just 14 minutes of playing time, going 6 for 10 from the field and 3 of 3 at the line. Junior center Paige Ballinger also hit double figures with 14 points.

UNK shot just 28.8 percent from the field on 21 of 73 shots, going 5 for 28 behind the 3-point line. The Lopers were 9 of 16 at the foul line.

Nieka Wheeler scored 17 points for UNK followed by Michaela Barry with 15.

WSC held a 44-40 edge in rebounding over the Lopers thanks to eight caroms from Martensen and Schulte while Ballinger and Reiner grabbed six boards apiece. Wheeler had 11 for UNK.

WSC had 20 turnovers in the game to just 11 for UNK. Moore handed out six of Wayne State's 12 assists in the game while Ballinger had three blocks with Schulte recording two.

Wayne State will be at home again Sunday afternoon hosting Peru State in a 3 p.m. contest at Rice Auditorium.

Wayne State College used three players in double figures while 12 of 13 players scored as the Wildcats defeated Peru State College 81-58 in non-conference women's basketball played Sunday afternoon at Rice Auditorium in Wayne. WSC is now 2-0 on the season while Peru State is 2-2.

The Wildcats never trailed, scoring the first eight points of the contest. WSC used 64 percent shooting in the first quarter (11-of-17) to take a 28-18 lead on the Bobcats.

Wayne State continued its stellar shooting in the second quarter, going 8-of-15 (53%) from the field, and outscored the Bobcats 22-12 to take a 50-30 lead at the intermission.

The third quarter saw WSC hold Peru State to just one basket (1-of-14 shooting) and the 'Cats outscored PSC 17-4 to take a 67-34 lead and the Wildcats finished the game with an 81-51 victory.

Wayne State finished the game going 30-of-64 from the field for 46.9 percent, but made just 2-of-15 from the 3-point line. The 'Cats were 19-of-28 at the charity stripe.

Junior center Paige Ballinger led a balanced Wildcat effort with 13 points followed by junior guard Kacie O'Connor and freshman center Taylor Wangerin with 12 points each.

Peru State was 18-of-59 from the field for 30.5 percent and 7-of-19 from behind the arc. The Bobcats were 8-of-13 at the free throw line.

Wayne State held a commanding 51-30 edge in rebounding over Peru State thanks to 11 rebounds from senior Katie Hoskins followed by seven from junior Maggie Schulte. Deandra Williams led Peru State on the glass with six.

The Wildcats will be at home again Friday evening hosting Rockhurst in a 7 p.m. contest at Rice Auditorium.

WSC men fall to #6 Northwest Missouri State 76-58

#6 Northwest Missouri State led from start to finish to defeat Wayne State College 76-58 Sunday afternoon at the 25th annual Hillyard Men's Basketball Tip-Off Classic in St. Joseph, Missouri. The Bearcats improve to 2-0 on the season while the Wildcats slip to 1-1.

Northwest Missouri State jumped out to an 18-3 lead in the opening eight minutes of the contest and maintained a double-digit lead the rest of the contest.

The Bearcats used 64 percent shooting in the first half (16-of-25) to take a 45-27 halftime lead. Sophomore forward Kendall Jacks had 13 of Wayne State's 27 points in the first half going 4-of-9 from the field and 4-for-6 at the free throw stripe.

Both teams scored 31 points in the second half as the Bearcats never let WSC closer than 15 points in the second half as Northwest Missouri State finished with the 76-58 victory.

Wayne State finished the game making 18-of-51 shots from the field for 35.3 percent. The 'Cats were 5-of-16 from behind the 3-point line and 17-of-22 at the charity stripe.

Jacks was Wayne State's lone double figure scorer with 21 points, finishing 8-of-15 from the field and 4-of-6 at the foul stripe. Matt Thomas and Tony Bonner each added eight points for WSC.

Northwest Missouri State made 25-of-48 shots for 52 percent, but only 3-of-13 from 3-point range. The Bearcats were 23-of-34 from the free throw line.

Justin Pitts paced Northwest Missouri State in scoring with 21 points followed by Anthony Wood with 20 and Xavier Kurth with 10 points and 11 rebounds.

NMSU controlled the rebounding battle on Wayne State 44-27 as Kurth grabbed 11 boards for the Bearcats while Wayne State's top rebounders were Jacks, Jordan Cornelius, Luke TerHark and Tony Bonner with three apiece.

Wayne State will be on the road Wednesday evening playing at Division I South Dakota State in an exhibition game for the Wildcats with tipoff set for 7 p.m.

WSC men push South Dakota State before falling 80-72 in exhibition game

South Dakota State needed to rally in the second half, outscoring Wayne State 47-35, as the Jackrabbits fought off Wayne State College 80-72 Wednesday evening in men's college basketball played at Frost Arena in Brookings, South Dakota. The host Jacks improve to 1-2 on the year while the game was an exhibition contest for the 1-1 Wildcats.

Wayne State never trailed in the first half against the Jackrabbits where SDSU is 63-3 at home over the last five seasons as the Wildcats used 55 percent shooting (15 of 27) including 7 of 14 from 3-point range as WSC led 37-33 at intermission.

The Wildcats built a 30-18 lead following a Vance Janssen jumper with 6:37 to play in the first half. After SDSU scored the next eight points to pull within four at 30-26, WSC used a Ben Hoskins 3-pointer to go in front by seven (33-26) before finishing the first half with a 37-33 lead.

SDSU took their first lead early in the second half on a Reed Tellinghuisen 3-pointer for a 38-37 lead with 18:14 to play in the game.

WSC battled with the Jackrabbits and took their final lead of the game at 53-52 on a Jordan Cornelius 3-pointer with 9:52 to play. The Jacks took the lead for good with a 9-0 run over the next 1:13 to go ahead 61-53 with 8:39 remaining. WSC got as close as five at 63-58 on a Matt Thomas 3-pointer with 6:37 to play, but SDSU never let the Wildcats get any closer and finished with an 80-72 win.

Wayne State finished the game making 28 of 60 shots from the field for 46.7 percent. The 'Cats were 13 for 26 behind the 3-point line and made all three of its free throws.

Juniors Matt Thomas and Jordan Cornelius led a balanced Wildcat scoring attack with 17 points each followed by Austin Esters with 14.

South Dakota State was 23 of 54 shooting for 42.6 percent, including 6 of 25 from 3-point range (24%). The Jacks were 28 of 33 at the free throw line.

Mike Daum led SDSU with 24 points followed by Skyler Flatten with 15 points.

SDSU held a commanding 41-24 advantage in rebounding over WSC thanks to 12 boards from Daum while Esters and Cornelius led WSC on the glass with four apiece.

WSC had just 12 turnovers in the game to 13 on SDSU. The Wildcats handed out 16 assists in the contest with sophomore guard Vance Janssen credited with a game-high five and Kendall Jacks with four.

Wayne State returns to regular season play on Monday opening the Northern Sun Conference schedule at #18 Augustana for an 8 p.m. contest in Sioux Falls.

Wayne State needed a 19-6 third quarter to break open a close, sluggish game as the Wildcats held Rockhurst to just 25 percent shooting (16-of-63) in a 58-45 non-conference women's basketball win over the Hawks Friday evening at Rice Auditorium in Wayne. It was the 27th consecutive non-conference home win for the Wildcats, now 3-0 on the season, while Rockhurst drops to 2-1.

Neither team could make a shot in the first quarter as the two teams played to an 8-8 tie after WSC made just 3 of 17 shots (17.6%) from the field while Rockhurst was 3 of 13 for 23 percent.

WSC took a pair of five-point leads in the second quarter before finishing with a 21-20 lead at intermission.

Maggie Schulte hit a 3-pointer and jumper on back-to-back possessions followed by an Anna Martensen layup that put WSC in front 16-11 with 6:51 remaining in the half. After Rockhurst scored the next five points to forge a 16-16 tie, WSC took another five-point lead at 21-16 following two Evelyn Knox free throws until the Hawks closed the gap to 21-20 at halftime.

The turning point in the game came in the third quarter when WSC held Rockhurst without a point for just under seven minutes as the Wildcats took control of the game building a double-digit lead. The 'Cats defense held the Hawks to just 3 of 19 shooting (15.8%) in the third quarter.

WSC held a 25-22 lead at the 8:42 mark of the third quarter and scored the next 11 points while holding the Hawks scoreless for 6:44 to take a commanding 36-22 lead. Haley Moore started the run with a 3-pointer followed by a pair of Martensen free throws and layup. Schulte and Paige Ballinger each added baskets to put the 'Cats up by 14.

The Wildcats ended the third quarter with a 19-6 scoring advantage and held a 40-26 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

WSC scored the opening five points of the fourth quarter to take their biggest lead of the game at 45-26 with 7:53 left in the game and maintained a double digit lead to finish with the 58-45 win.

Wayne State finished the game making 19-of-54 shots for 35.2 percent, going just 4-of-17 from the 3-point line. The 'Cats were 16-of-23 (69.6%) at the charity stripe in the win.

Senior forward Anna Martensen paced the Wildcats with 15 points, going 5-of-7 from the field and 5-for-6 at the free throw line. Junior forward Maggie Schulte also hit double figures with 10 points.

Rockhurst was held to just 25.4 percent shooting on 16-of-63, going 4-of-18 from the three point line and 9-for-11 at the charity stripe.

Mary Dineen was the lone double-digit scorer for the Hawks with 17 points.
