    Ballinger's hot shooting leads Wayne State to 75-45 road win over Minot State

    Efficient shooting by junior Paige Ballinger leads Wayne State to a 75-45 Northern Sun Conference women's basketball victory Saturday at Minot State in Minot, North Dakota. The Wildcats improve to 7-3 and 2-3 in the NSIC while the host Beavers fall to 2-9 and 0-5 in NSIC play.

    The Wildcats trailed 6-3 early in the first quarter before scoring thirteen straight. WSC did not trail the remainder of the game following the 13-0 run. Anna Martensen recorded five points and three steals to spark the Wayne State offense as the 'Cats shot 71.4% from the field in the first quarter.

    Wayne State used eight points from the bench and seven points off turnovers to take a 31-18 lead into halftime against Minot State.

    The game was never closer than the halftime score as the Wildcats shot 75% from the field as a team in the second half. Paige Ballinger scored eight points while Maggie Shulte added six points in the third quarter to extend the lead to 21 heading into the fourth quarter.

    Andrea Larson opened up the scoring in the fourth quarter with two layups to put Wayne State ahead 55-30. The lead continued to increase as seven different Wildcats scored in the final quarter to give WSC the 75-45 win.

    Ballinger led all scorers with 17 points after playing eight total minutes. The Pender High School graduate was 7-of-7 from the field and 3-of-3 from the charity stripe. Junior Maggie Schulte added 11 points and five assists.

    WSC shot 62.2% from the field (28-of-45) and 57.1% (4-of-7) from three point range. Wayne State shot 83.3% (15-of-18) from the charity stripe.

    Minot State had two double-digit scorers in the game. Madison Wald recorded 12 points and five rebounds while Kristal Flowers had 10 points and four rebounds for the Beavers. Minot State made 18-of-62 shots from the field for 29.0% and was 5-of-22 from three point range. The Beavers shot 50% at the line, going 4-of-8.

    Minot State outrebounded WSC 33-31. Haley Hildenbrand hauled in six rebounds for the Beavers while freshman Amanda Brainerd recorded a season-high six rebounds to lead the 'Cats.

    The Wildcats forced 18 turnovers and held a 20-11 edge in points off turnovers in the game. Wayne State's bench also held a 32-20 advantage in bench scoring over Minot State.

    Eight Wildcats recorded assists in the game while Martensen was credited with a team-high six steals. Paige Ballinger and Taylor Reiner each had two blocks for the Wildcats.

    Wayne State returns to action on Saturday afternoon, hosting Augustana University in a 4 p.m. NSIC contest at Rice Auditorium.

      Wildcats erase 17-point halftime deficit to defeat Beavers 85-80 on the road

      The Wildcats erased a 17-point halftime deficit to defeat the Beavers 85-80 on the road in a Northern Sun Conference men's basketball game played Saturday night at the Minot State Dome in Minot, North Dakota. WSC is now 3-7 overall and 2-3 in league play while Minot State falls to 5-6 and 1-4 in NSIC play.

      Minot State scored the first 12 points of the game to gain control early in the first half. A 3-pointer by Vance Janssen at the 16:06 mark in the first half gave the Wildcats their first points of the game. The Beavers continued their hot shooting for the remainder of the first half as Russ Davis scored 13 points. Minot State had a lead as large as 19 with 2:32 remaining in the half. Minot State headed into halftime with a 48-31 lead over WSC.

      Wayne State and Minot State traded baskets to start the second half and it wasn't until the 10:13 mark the Wildcats cut the Beavers lead to under ten points. WSC then went on a 5-0 run sparked by a Kendall Jacks layup and a Tony Bonner jumper, which forced Minot State to call a timeout with Wayne State trailing 67-61. The Wildcats continued to rally and gained their first lead of the game with 5:07 remaining thanks to a Ben Hoskins 3-pointer.

      The next possession Brian Goodwin added a 3-pointer of his own to give the Wildcats a 75-71 edge with 4:12 left in the game. The Beavers would get as close as one with 19 seconds remaining before the Wildcats closed out the game. Janssen expanded the WSC lead to five with a layup and two made free throws on the final two Wildcat possessions to complete the comeback victory 85-80.

      Wayne State was 31-of-55 (56.4%) from the field in the game, including 11-fo-20 from 3-point range. The Wildcats went 12-of-18 at the free throw line.

      Six Wildcats reached double figures led by Vance Janssen with 16 points. Austin Esters added 13 off the bench with Jacks and Hoskins producing 12 and Brian Goodwin and Matt Thomas scoring 10 each. Hoskins hit a season-high four 3-pointers with three coming in the second half to help the Wildcats secure the come-from-behind victory.

      Minot State connected on 28-of-50 shots (56.0%) in the game. The Beavers were 6-of-15 from behind the arc and made 18-of-23 at the charity stripe.

      Nathan Mertens led all scorers with 21 points. Tyler Rudolph (14), Russ Davis (13), and Stevan Jovanovic (10) also reached double figures for the Beavers.

      Minot State outrebounded WSC 28-24. Tony Bonner hauled in five rebounds to lead the 'Cats whiel Stevan Javanovic led Minot State on the glass with seven.

      The Beavers had three more turnovers than the Wildcats 16-13 but held a 22-18 points-off-turnover advantage against WSC.

      Vance Janssen led WSC with three steals while Kendall Jacks had four assists in the contest.

      Wayne State returns to action Saturday afternoon hosting #21 Augustana University in a 6 p.m. NSIC contest at Rice Auditorium.

        Augustana's hot shooting too much for Wildcats

        Augustana University sank 18-of-29 3-pointers and finished the game making 37-of-59 shots for 62.7 percent as the Vikings cruised to a 93-60 Northern Sun Conference men's basketball win Saturday evening over Wayne State College at Rice Auditorium in Wayne. The Vikings improved to 9-2 and 5-1 in the NSIC while Wayne State falls to 3-8 and 2-4 in league play.

        The Vikings got off to a quick start, taking a 14-4 lead at the first media timeout. WSC then scored the next 11 points and took a 15-14 lead on a jumper from Austin Esters with 9:57 to play in the first half.

        The two teams battled back and forth and were tied at 23-23 with 6:10 remaining in the half when Augustana took control of the game. The Vikings went on a 15-4 run and took a 42-27 lead before finishing the first half with a 42-31 lead at intermission.

        A Jordan Cornelius 3-pointer to open the second half got WSC within eight at 42-34, but that's as close as the Wildcats would get. The Vikings used four straight 3-pointers to take a commanding 62-40 lead and the Vikings continued their scorching shooting from the field as Augustana went on to the convincing 93-60 victory.

        Wayne State made 22 of 57 shots in the game for 38.6 percent, including 6 of 25 behind the arc. The 'Cats were 10 for 12 from the free throw line.

        Cornelius paced WSC in scoring with 18 points followed by Esters with 14 and Kendall Jacks 10.

        Augustana shot a sizzling 62.7 percent for the game making 37 of 59 shots. The Vikings were 18 for 29 from 3-point range for 62.1 percent and 1 of 5 at the free throw line.

        John Warren poured in 30 points for the Vikings on 11 of 14 shooting and 7 for 10 behind the arc. Jordan Spencer added 19 points with 10 assists while Steven Schaefer also hit double digits with 10 points.

        Augustana out-rebounded WSC 32-29 in the contest as Spencer hauled in seven boards for the Vikings while Cornelius grabbed eight caroms for WSC.

        WSC had 16 turnovers in the game to 14 by the Vikings. Augustana held a 38-28 advantage on points in the paint and 24-12 in points off turnovers.

        Kendall Jacks had five of Wayne State's 12 assists while Cornelius was credited with four of Wayne State's nine steals.

        Wayne State will be home again Monday evening hosting William Jewell in the final non-conference game of the season starting at 6 p.m. in Rice Auditorium.

          O'Connor's career-high 24 carries WSC women past Augustana 75-66

          Junior guard Kacie O'Connor scored a career-high 24 points to lead Wayne State College in a 75-66 victory over Augustana University Saturday evening in Northern Sun Conference women's basketball played at Rice Auditorium in Wayne. The Wildcats move to 8-3 overall and 3-3 in the NSIC while handing Augustana their first league loss of the season as the Vikings drop to 10-3 and 5-1 in league play.

          WSC jumped out of the gate taking an 11-4 lead in the first five minutes of the contest. After pushing the lead to 10 at 18-8 with 1:26 to go in the quarter, Augustana closed the gap and trailed 19-14 after 10 minutes of play.

          The Wildcats used back-to-back 3-pointers from O'Connor to start the second quarter to take a 25-14 lead, but the Vikings slowly chipped away and got within one 29-28 before WSC got a three-point play from O'Connor to end the half giving the Wildcats a 32-28 lead at intermission.

          WSC pushed the lead to nine again early in the third quarter (37-28), but the Vikings charged back and took their first lead of the game at 49-47 on a pair of Naomi Rust free throws with 1:25 to play in the quarter.

          The 'Cats used a pair of O'Connor free throws and a 3-pointer from O'Connor to end the quarter giving WSC a 52-51 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

          The two teams traded four lead changes and four ties early in the quarter until WSC pulled away in the final five minutes for the victory.

          Augustana took their final lead of the night at 63-62 on a Logan O'Farrell free throw with 4:32 remaining.

          WSC used four straight free throws from Anna Martensen to take the lead for good at 66-63 with 4:08 to play. The 'Cats used jumpers from Paige Ballinger and Haley Moore to take a 70-63 lead and Augustana never got closer than five the rest of the night as the Wildcats finished with the 75-66 win.

          Wayne State shot just 34.4 percent for the game making 21 of 61 including 8 for 29 behind the arc. The Wildcats tied a season-high making 25 of 29 free throws (86.2%) in the win.

          O'Connor's career-high 24 points led WSC in scoring. She was 5 of 11 from the field, 3 of 6 behind the arc and 11 for 12 from the charity stripe. Maggie Schulte (17) and Martensen (11) also reached double digits for the 'Cats.

          Augustana ended the game making 24 of 67 shots for 35.8 percent that included 5 of 22 from the 3-point line. The Vikings were 13 for 19 at the foul line.

          Naomi Rust had 17 points with Logan O'Farrell adding 15 for the Vikings.

          Augustana held a slim 43-42 edge in rebounding over the Wildcats with Logan O'Farrell grabbing eight boards for the Vikings while Schulte hauled in nine boards with Martensen and Paige Ballinger each adding eight for the Wildcats.

          Both teams had 16 turnovers in the contest. Moore had five of Wayne State's 10 assists while Ballinger and O'Connor each had two steals. Ballinger had four of Wayne State's five blocks.

          The Wildcats resume play following the holiday break on Friday, December 30 hosting Sioux Falls in a 6 p.m. contest in Rice Auditorium.

            Balanced attack leads WSC men past William Jewell

            Six players scored in double figures as Wayne State College cruised to a 79-52 non-conference men's basketball win Monday evening over William Jewell College at Rice Auditorium in Wayne. The host Wildcats improved to 4-8 on the season with the win while the Cardinals drop to 3-6.

            The game was close for much of the first half until the Wildcats used a scoring surge in the final 2:30 to take a double digit lead at halftime.

            Leading 12-10 at the first media timeout of the first half (14:16), WSC took a seven-point lead at 19-12 on a Vance Janssen 3-pointer with 10:57 to go in the half.

            After William Jewell got within three at 21-18, WSC used a 3-pointer by Jordan Cornelius and a layup by Matt Thomas to go in front 26-18. But the Cardinals battled back again and got as close as three at 31-28 thanks to a Matt Lassen 3-pointer at the 4:10 mark of the first half.

            WSC closed the half strong, taking their first double digit lead on an Austin Esters tip-in for a 39-29 lead with 1:15 remaining in the half before finishing with a 43-31 lead at intermission.

            The opening segment of the second half saw each team make scoring runs until the Wildcats put the game out of reach by holding William Jewell scoreless for over eight minutes.

            The Wildcats opened the half scoring eight of the first 12 points to take a 49-35 lead following a Thomas layup with 17:06 to play.

            William Jewell then scored the next eight points and got within six at 49-43 on a Jorge Perez-Laham 3-pointer with 15:01 remaining. WSC then held the Cardinals without a point for the next 8:06, scoring 18 straight points to take control of the game with a 67-43 lead with 7:23 to play on a Kendall Jacks fast-break dunk.

            Wayne State finished the game making 28 of 55 shots for 50.9 percent, going 9 for 20 behind the arc and 14 for 19 at the free throw line.

            Thomas paced a balanced Wildcat attack with 14 points followed by Jacks with 13. Junior guard Brian Goodwin contributed 12 points while Cornelius, Janssen and Esters each scored 11 in the win.

            William Jewell shot 39.2 percent on 20 of 51 from the field including 4 of 15 from 3-point range and 8 of 10 at the foul stripe.

            Jorge Perez-Laham led the Cardinals with 15 points followed by Emil Ostafiiciuc with 14.

            Wayne State had one more rebound than WJC 33-32. Esters led the 'Cats with seven caroms while Ostafiiciuc grabbed eight boards for the Cardinals.

            The Wildcats held a 25-8 advantage in points off turnovers thanks to forcing 20 miscues on WJC while WSC had just 10. Cornelius handed out five of Wayne State's 18 assists while Janssen was credited with three of Wayne State's six blocks.

            Wayne State is off for the Christmas break and resumes play on Friday, December 30th hosting the University of Sioux Falls in an 8 p.m. NSIC contest at Rice Auditorium.

              Has WSC maybe found a coach who can right the ship? It is nice to be competitive in games. Did WSC win 5 games last year?

                Yep, 5-24.

                Kaminsky seems to have the guys on the right track. Will be interesting to see how he recruits

                  Poor Shooting Hurts WSC in 64-58 loss to Sioux Falls

                  Wayne State College shot just 36 percent from the field as Sioux Falls held off a late Wildcat rally for a 64-58 Northern Sun Conference men's basketball win Friday evening at Rice Auditorium in Wayne. USF is now 7-8 and 3-4 in league play while WSC slips to 4-9 and 2-5 in the NSIC.

                  The two teams exchanged three ties and three lead changes in the first eight minutes of the game, but the Cougars led the rest of the night.

                  WSC took its biggest lead of the night at 12-9 with 14:50 to play in the first half following a Kendall Jacks layup. The Cougars then scored eight of the next nine points and led 17-13 following a Zach Wessels free throw with 9:43 remaining in the first half.

                  USF pushed the lead to seven at 26-19 with 2:51 to go in the half before WSC finished the half with a Vance Janssen jumper followed by two Jacks free throws and a layup by JJ Zumbrennen to end the half with the 'Cats trailing 26-25.

                  WSC tied the score at 32 early in the second half (15:27) on a layup from Jacks. But the Cougars took control of the game with a 12-0 run over the next 5:37 and built a 44-32 lead.

                  USF took its biggest lead of the night at 47-34 with 9:19 to play on a Mack Johnson three-point play.

                  WSC still trailed 54-43 with 5:51 remaining before making one last rally at the Cougars. A layup by Jacks got the 'Cats within four at 54-50 with 2:49 to play, but USF answered the run and went back up eight at 61-53 before finishing with the 64-58 win.

                  Wayne State had its second-worst shooting night of the season, going 20 of 55 for 36.4 percent. The 'Cats were 5 for 25 behind the arc and 13 of 21 (61.9%) at the charity stripe.

                  Janssen led WSC in scoring with 15 points while Jacks also reached double digits with 11.

                  Sioux Falls made 22 of 45 shots for 48.9 percent, including 3 of 9 from the 3-point line. The Cougars were 17 for 26 at the free throw line.

                  Mack Johsnon poured in a game-high 24 points for the Cougars. Drew Guebert chipped in 13 while Zach Wessels and Daniel Hurtt each added 10.

                  The Cougars held a slight 35-33 edge in rebounding over WSC thanks to seven boards by Clint Thomas while Jordan Cornelius grabbed a game-high 10 caroms for the Wildcats.

                  Jacks handed out four of Wayne State's nine assists while Janssen and Brian Goodwin each had two steals.

                  The Wildcats will be at home again Saturday evening hosting #25 Southwest Minnesota State in a New Year's Even matchup starting at 6 p.m.

                    Wildcats Force 28 Turnovers, Hold Off Late USF Rally for 58-50 Win

                    Wayne State College forced 28 Sioux Falls turnovers and held a 28-15 advantage in points off turnovers, but had to hold off a late Cougar rally to forge a 58-50 Northern Sun Conference women's basketball win Friday evening at Rice Auditorium in Wayne. WSC improves to 9-3 and 4-3 in league play while dropping USF to 9-2 and 5-2 in the NSIC.

                    The Wildcats set the tone early in the game, taking an 8-0 lead in the first 3:30 minutes of the contest. The 'Cats took a 12-2 lead following a Paige Ballinger jumper at the 3:37 mark before finishing the first stanza with a 14-5 lead.

                    WSC opened the second quarter with an Amanda Brainerd 3-pointer to take a 17-5 lead. After USF got within seven at 21-14, the 'Cats used a Maggie Schulte free throw, Katie Hoskins 3-pointer and Kacie O'Connor free throw to finish the first half with a 26-16 lead at intermission.

                    Wayne State opened the second half strong and built a 23-point lead (39-16) midway through the third quarter when the Cougars started to rally.

                    USF closed the final five minutes of the third quarter with a 13-2 run and trailed 41-29 entering the fourth quarter.

                    WSC still led by 12 at 48-36 with 5:16 to play after a pair of Haley Moore free throws.

                    But the Cougars charged back again and got within three at 52-49 following a Madi Robson free throw.

                    The Wildcats got a pair of free throws on the next possession from Maggie Schulte for a 54-49 lead.

                    After Robson went 1 of 2 at the stripe again to get USF with four at 54-50, WSC used two free throws each from Ballinger and Schulte to close the contest as WSC finished with the 58-50 win.

                    Wayne State shot a season-low 27.5 percent in the game, making just 14 of 51 shots. WSC was 5 of 17 from the 3-point line and 25 for 34 (73.5%) at the charity stripe.

                    Ballinger led WSC in scoring with 17 points followed by O'Connor with 12.

                    Sioux Falls connected on 17 of 53 shots from the field for 32.1 percent. The Cougars were 7 for 21 behind the arc and 9 of 15 at the foul line.

                    Sam Knecht led USF with 14 points followed by Robson with 12.

                    Wayne State was out-rebounded by USF 46-34 as Jacey Huinker pulled in 12 boards for the Cougars followed by Knecht with 10. Wayne State's top rebounders were Schulte and Amanda Brainerd with five apiece.

                    The Wildcats held a 28-15 advantage on points in the paint, but USF had a 15-5 edge in second chance points thanks to 12 offensive rebounds.

                    Moore had five of Wayne State's 10 assists and also led WSC in steals with four while Ballinger was credited with four of the Wildcats' seven blocked shots.

                    Wayne State will be at home again Saturday afternoon hosting Southwest Minnesota State in a 4 p.m. NSIC contest at Rice Auditorium.

                      Big third quarter helps WSC rally for 78-70 win over SMSU

                      Wayne State used a 22-13 scoring advantage in the third quarter to gain momentum and overturn a halftime deficit as the Wildcats rallied for a 78-70 Northern Sun Conference women's basketball win over pesky Southwest Minnesota State Saturday afternoon at Rice Auditorium in Wayne. The Wildcats improve to 10-3 and 5-3 in the NSIC while the Mustangs drop to 1-11 and 1-7 in league play.

                      After trailing 6-2 early in the game, WSC came back and took a 13-10 lead after the first quarter.

                      SMSU used stellar free throw shooting in the second quarter, getting WSC into foul trouble to take the lead at halftime.

                      With WSC leading 19-16, Wildcat head coach Chris Kielsmeier was called for a technical foul that ignited a Mustang scoring surge of 10-1 giving the Mustangs a 26-20 lead midway through the second period.

                      SMSU pushed the lead to seven at 29-22, but WSC got within one at 31-30 following a Paige Ballinger layup before the Mustangs finished the first half with a 38-34 lead.

                      The Wildcats forged a 40-40 tie early in the third quarter on a Maggie Schulte jumper and took the lead for good at 43-41 following a Haley Moore 3-pointer. A three-point play by Schulte at the 5:33 mark put the 'Cats in front 46-41. WSC pushed the lead to six at 56-50 on a pair of Andrea Larson free throws before finishing the third quarter with a 56-51 lead.

                      WSC took its biggest lead of the night at 66-55 on a pair of Larson free throws with 7:35 to play. SMSU would not go away and within five twice with the final one coming at 66-61 with 6:07 to play.

                      The Wildcats sealed the win by going 6 for 6 at the line in the final 90 seconds to preserve the 78-70 hard-fought win.

                      Wayne State shot 53.1 percent for the game making 26 of 49 shots. The 'Cats were 6 of 10 behind the arc and 20 for 23 (87 percent) at the charity stripe.

                      Schulte led five Wildcat players in double figures with 21 points, going 7 of 10 from the field and 6 for 7 at the stripe. Paige Ballinger and Andrea Larson scored 16 and 15 respectively while Haley Moore produced a season-high 12 points and Kacie O'Connor scored 11.

                      SMSU shot 51 percent from the field making 24 of 47 shots, going 4 of 10 from the 3-point line and 18 for 23 at the free throw line.

                      Caleigh Rodning poured in a team-high 19 points for the Mustangs with Lauren Hedlund scoring 15. Taylor Holicky had a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds while Abby Connell also scored 14 points.

                      SMSU held a 27-24 advantage in rebounding with Holicky grabbing 10 for the Mustangs while O'Connor hauled in eight boards for the Wildcats. WSC forced 21 turnovers on the Mustangs and held a 24-10 advantage on points off turnovers.

                      The Wildcats will be on the road next weekend, playing at Concordia-St. Paul Friday night at 6 p.m. and Minnesota State Saturday in a 4 p.m. contest.

                        #25 Southwest Minnesota State built a 42-27 halftime lead and maintained a double-digit advantage the rest of the way as the Mustangs downed Wayne State College 85-73 in a Northern Sun Conference men's basketball game played Saturday evening at Rice Auditorium in Wayne. SMSU is now 12-1 and 7-1 in league play while the Wildcats drop to 4-10 and 2-6 in the NSIC.

                        WSC held a pair of leads early in the game until the Mustangs went on a big scoring run and never relinquished the lead the rest of the night.

                        Kendall Jacks scored five of Wayne State's first seven points on a 3-pointer to open the game and a jumper that was the Wildcats' final lead of the night at 7-6 with 17:26 to play.

                        SMSU then scored the next six points for a 12-7 lead which catapulted to 22-11 at the 11:07 mark following a Turner Moen layup.

                        WSC got as close as seven at 24-17 at the 7:16 mark on a JJ Zumbrennen 3-poniter. The Mustangs then scored the next nine points to go up 33-17 and finished the first half with a 42-27 lead.

                        SMSU used a Ryan Brueggeman 3-pointer to open the second half for the Mustangs' biggest lead of the night at 45-27. The Mustangs held a double digit lead the rest of the night.

                        WSC got as close as 10 at 72-62 on a pair of Matt Thomas free throws with 4:12 to play, then SMSU scored the next five points to go in front 77-62 and went on to the 85-73 victory.

                        Wayne State was 25 of 63 from the field for 39.7 percent. The 'Cats were 5 of 18 from the 3-point line and 18 for 25 at the free throw line.

                        Jacks and Thomas led WSC in scoring with 19 points apiece while Jordan Cornelius also reached double figures with 11.

                        SMSU made 26 of 50 from the field for 52 percent. The Mustangs were 5 of 19 from the 3-point line and 28 for 43 at the charity stripe.

                        Ryan Bruggeman scored a game-high 25 points for the Mustangs. KJ Davis scored 14 points while Carter Kirk notched a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds. Mitch Weg also hit double digits with 10.

                        SMSU held a sizeable 44-30 advantage in rebounding over the Wildcats. Cornelius grabbed nine boards for WSC.

                        Vance Janssen had four of Wayne State's eight steals and three of the 'Cats 10 assists.

                        Wayne State is on the road next weekend as the Wildcats visit Concordia-St. Paul Friday night at 8 p.m. and Minnesota State Saturday for a 6 p.m. tipoff.

                          Wayne State College used balanced scoring with four players in double figures and were credited with a season-high 24 assists on 25 made baskets as the Wildcats rolled to a 71-51 Northern Sun Conference men's basketball win Friday evening over Concordia-St. Paul at the Gangelhoff Center in St. Paul, Minnesota. WSC sweeps the season series with the Golden Bears and is now 5-10 and 3-6 in the NSIC while CSP is 4-11 and 1-7 in league play.

                          The Wildcats jumped out quickly, scoring the first 13 points of the contest at the 15:36 mark of the first half.

                          Concordia-St. Paul then stormed back, going on a 13-2 run, to get within two at 15-13 on a Matt Ambriz 3-pointer with 12:22 to go in the first half.

                          WSC pushed the lead back to eight and was in front 24-16 when the Golden Bears scored five straight points to get as close as three at 24-21 with 4:04 to go before halftime.

                          The Wildcats then held Concordia-St. Paul without a field goal the rest of the half and used a Jordan Cornelius trey with 41 seconds left before halftime to take their biggest lead of the first half at 36-22 before closing the half with a 36-23 halftime advantage.

                          Wayne State never let up on the Golden Bears in the second half, maintaining a double figure led the rest of the way.

                          With WSC leading 47-33 with 13:36 to play, the 'Cats put the game out of reach with a 12-2 run over the following 3:30 highlighted by 3-pointers from Matt Thomas and Vance Janssen that gave the Wildcats a commanding 59-35 lead with 9:06 to play.

                          Wildcat reserves closed out the game and Wayne State ended with the 71-51 win.

                          Wayne State made 25 of 53 shots in the game for 47.2 percent. The 'Cats were 9 of 22 from the 3-point line and 12 of 14 at the foul line.

                          Junior forward Jordan Cornelius led a balanced Wildcat attack with 14 points. Sophomore guard Vance Janssen added 13 while Kendall Jacks and Austin Esters each recorded 12 points in the win.

                          Concordia-St. Paul shot 40.4 percent from the field on 19 of 47. The Golden Bears were 3 of 11 behind the arc and just 10 for 20 at the free throw line.

                          Matt Ambriz paced Concordia-St. Paul with 12 points followed by Bryndan Matthews with 11.

                          Wayne State was out-rebounded 34-27 despite five boards from Janssen.

                          Junior guard Brian Goodwin handed out a career-high eight assists for WSC followed by Janssen and Thomas with four apiece.

                          Wayne State will visit Minnesota State Saturday in a 6 p.m. NSIC contest.

                            Wayne State used a 12-0 run late in the third quarter extending into the fourth quarter to snap a 46-46 tie as the Wildcats pulled away for a 66-52 Northern Sun Conference women's basketball victory at Concordia-St. Paul Friday evening in the Gangelhoff Center at St. Paul, Minnesota. It was the sixth straight win for the Wildcats, now 11-3 overall and 6-3 in the NSIC, while the host Golden Bears drop to 7-7 and 3-5 in league play.

                            The win also marked the 200th victory for head coach Chris Kielsmeier, who is now 200-61 (.766) in his ninth season as head coach at Wayne State College.

                            The first half featured length scoring runs by both teams.

                            With Concordia-St. Paul leading 7-4 at the 5:38 mark of the first quarter, Wayne State scored the next 20 points of the game and held the Golden Bears scoreless for the next 7:08 extending into the second quarter.

                            The Wildcats finished the first quarter leading 20-7 and held a 24-7 lead at the end of the 20-0 run. But the Golden Bears responded with their own scoring run, producing the next 10 points over a span of 3:06 to get within 24-17 before Wayne State closed the first half with a 34-27 advantage.

                            WSC still maintained a lead midway through the third quarter until the Golden Bears rallied to tie the game. With the Wildcats leading 42-34, CSP scored nine of the next 10 points and tied the score at 43-43 on a Hanna Vidlund 3-pointer with 3:14 left third quarter.

                            After both teams traded 3-point baskets for a 46-46 score, the Wildcats reeled off 12 straight points over the next 6:20 that carried into the fourth quarter to take control of the game.

                            Junior center Paige Ballinger scored six straight points in the 12-0 scoring run and then added a three-point play that put the 'Cats in front 60-49. The Wildcats maintained a double digit lead the rest of the way and finished with the 66-52 win that avenged an 86-66 home loss to the Golden Bears on December 3rd in Rice Auditorium.

                            Wayne State was 22 of 56 shooting for the contest (39.3%), going 4 of 8 from the 3-point line and 18 out of 25 (72%) at the charity stripe.

                            Junior forward Maggie Schulte paced Wayne State with 14 points and 12 rebounds for her first double-double of the season. Ballinger also hit double digits for the Wildcats with 13 points, all coming in the second half.

                            Concordia-St. Paul made 19 of 59 shots in the game for 32.2 percent. The Golden Bears were 7 for 20 behind the arc and 7 for 8 at the free throw line.

                            Caitlyn Russell poured in a game-high 16 points for CSP while Mishayla Jones added 11.

                            WSC held a 44-34 advantage in the rebounding battle thanks to 12 caroms by Schulte while Kyrah Fredenburg grabbed nine boards for the Golden Bears.

                            The Wildcats had one more turnover than CSP, 19-18, resulting in a 20-13 edge for the Golden Bears in points off turnovers. WSC held a 9-3 edge in second chance points and 11-0 in fast break points over the Golden Bears.

                            Haley Moore had four of Wayne State's 12 assists in the game and four of the Wildcats' 12 steals. Ballinger had three blocked shots with sophomore Taylor Reiner adding two.

                            Wayne State will visit Minnesota State Saturday in a 4 p.m. contest at Mankato, Minnesota.

                              Schulte, Moore carry WSC to seventh straight win at Minnesota State

                              Junior forward Maggie Schulte recorded her second straight double-double while senior guard Haley Moore scored a career-high 20 points to lead Wayne State College in a 70-55 Northern Sun Conference women's basketball victory at Minnesota State Saturday evening in Mankato, Minnesota. It was the seventh straight win for Wayne State, now 12-3 and 7-3 in the NSIC. MSU falls to 7-6 overall and 3-6 in league play.

                              Wayne State got off to a slow start, trailing 9-4 in the first 2:30 of the contest. But the Wildcats responded with a 12-0 run over the next 5:32 to take a 16-9 lead, an advantage WSC would never relinquish the rest of the game.

                              Following the WSC run, Minnesota State closed the first quarter strong and pulled within 19-16 after one quarter.

                              WSC built an eight-point lead midway through the second quarter at 27-19 with 3:23 remaining in the half. After MSU closed within two at 27-25, WSC finished the first half with a 31-27 advantage.

                              Wayne State broke the game open in the third quarter with a 25-10 scoring advantage to take a commanding 56-37 lead after three quarters.

                              MSU was still within five at 36-31 with 7:42 to go in the third quarter, but WSC went on a 9-1 run to push the lead to double digits and the Wildcats never let the Mavericks back into the contest.

                              Wayne State maintained a double digit lead the rest of the way as the Wildcats ended with a 70-55 win.

                              The Wildcats finished the game making 25 of 60 shots from the field for 41.7 percent, including 5 of 18 from the 3- point line. WSC was 15 of 19 from the charity stripe for 78.9 percent.

                              Schulte led WSC with her second straight double-double, recording 24 points and 12 rebounds. She was a perfect 11 of 11 at the charity stripe. Senior guard Haley Moore also had a big game for the Wildcats scoring a career-high 20 points. She was 7 for 12 from the field and 3 of 5 from the 3-point line along with 3 for 4 at the foul stripe.

                              Minnesota State was 22 of 68 shooting for 32.4 percent. The Mavericks were 6 of 18 behind the arc and just 5 for 7 at the free throw line.

                              WSC held a 45-38 edge in rebounding over Minnesota State thanks to 12 caroms by Schulte six each from Paige Ballinger and Katie Hoskins. Hoskins led WSC in assists with three while sophomore Taylor Reiner tied a career-high with five blocked shots.

                              The Wildcats will return home to the friendly confines of Rice Auditorium next weekend for NSIC contests against #25 Northern State Friday night at 6 p.m. and #24 MSU-Moorhead in a 4 p.m. contest.

                                Big second half lifts Mavericks past Wildcats

                                Minnesota State scored the first eight points of the second half, then used a 14-1 run midway through the second half to put the game out of reach as the Mavericks defeated Wayne State College 87-78 in Northern Sun Conference men's basketball Saturday evening in Mankato, Minnesota at the Taylor Center. MSU is now 10-5 and 5-4 in league play while WSC falls to 5-11 and 3-7 in the NSIC.

                                The game was close early in a first half that featured six ties and seven lead changes.

                                Minnesota State's biggest lead of the first half was four at 14-10 with 12:19 to go in the half. WSC then scored the next five points and took their first lead of the night at 15-14 on a Tony Bonner jumper with 11:32 to go before halftime.

                                WSC pushed the lead to four at 21-17 at the midway point of the first half on a Brian Goodwin 3-pointer. But MSU came back to take the lead until the Wildcats closed the final four minutes of the first half strong to take a 41-36 lead.

                                With MSU leading 30-29 at the 4:15 mark, the Wildcats used a pair of Austin Esters layups and two Matt Thomas free throws to grab a 35-30 lead. Wayne State took its biggest lead of the night at 39-31 on two Thomas free throws with 1:59 to go in the half before ending with a 41-36 lead.

                                Minnesota State opened the second half scoring the first eight points to take the lead for good at 44-41. WSC got within two at 50-48 on an Esters layup with 14:50 to go in the game, but the Mavericks held WSC without a basket for the next 5:27 and went on a 14-1 run to take a 64-49 lead with 9:44 left.

                                Still down 70-57 with 6:05 remaining, WSC got as close as five at 78-73 with 1:22 on the clock following a Thomas layup on an offensive rebound. Minnesota State then held off the Wildcats making 9 of 10 free throws in the final 90 seconds to top WSC 87-78.

                                Wayne State was 30 of 64 shooting for 46.9 percent. The 'Cats were 4 of 12 behind the arc and 14 for 19 at the charity stripe.

                                Jacks led WSC in scoring with 19 points followed by Esters with 14. Matt Thomas and Brian Goodwin also reached double digits with 13 and 11 respectively.

                                Minnesota State ended the game making 29 of 54 shots for 53.7 percent. The Mavericks were 10 of 19 from 3-point range and 19 for 27 at the foul line.

                                Jon Fuqua scored a game-high 21 points for MSU. Aarias Austin (16), Joey Witthus (12) and Cameron Kirksey (10) also produced double figures for the Mavericks.

                                Wayne State held a 37-28 advantage in rebounding thanks to nine boards by Jacks. The 'Cats also had 11 offensive rebounds in the contest.

                                Wayne State is at home next weekend entertaining Northern State Friday evening at 8 p.m. and MSU Moorhead Saturday at 6 p.m. in Rice Auditorium.
