  • Proposed D2 Tournament - Men

  • #2

regional sites of 4 teams each
    March 18
    March 25
48 teams only travel once and are eliminated.
    12 teams travel twice.

The first weekend regionals are based somewhat geographically but involve teams from different conferences. I.e. each site has 4 different conferences represented.
The top 16 teams are all sent to a different site that first weekend.
Pairings to be released today! Check back later.

KEY: Seed Team Name State (Record) (Conference) (Massey/PI avg)

        Southeast Region

1 Nova Southeastern FL (25-0) (SSC auto qualifier) (1.0) vs.
16 Savannah State GA (15-12) (SIAC auto qualifier) (194.5)

        7 Flagler FL (21-7) (PBC) (33.0) vs.
        12 Wingate NC (21-8) (SAC) (60.0)

4 UNC Pembroke NC (26-3) (CC) (15.5) vs.
        11 Georgia College (21-7) (PBC) (53.5)

        10 Virginia Union (23-7) (CIAA) (51.5) vs.
        14 Charleston WV (23-7) (MEC) (62.5)

2 Augusta GA (26-3) (PBC auto qualifier) (8.0) vs.
15 Alabama Huntsville (18-10) (GSC auto qualifier) (84.0)

        8 Barry FL (18-8) (SSC) (39.5) vs.
14 Belmont Abbey NC (22-9) (CC auto qualifier) (71.0)

3 Queens NC (27-3) (SAC auto qualifier) (13.0) vs.
15 Fayetteville State NC (CIAA auto qualifier) (81.5)

        9 Embry-Riddle FL (21-9) (SSC) (43.0) vs.
        11 Columbus State GA (20-10) (PBC) (53.0)

        WELCOME TO THE DANCE
Virginia Union (38th best team, but left out of real tourney)
        Wingate (48th)
        Charleston (53rd)

note: no team from any of the above conferences was knocked out because of these three additions; they are all simply victims of too many good teams in the southeast and the current real format does no favors to that scenario

I've thought about doing something similar to this just to see how it would pan out. It must've been a ton of work to create. I would be very interested to see the other brackets you have.

Agreed- on seeing other brackets, not doing the work myself :)

Seeds based on where each team fell among the Top 41 plus 23 auto-qualifiers (field of 64) based on an average of Massey Rating and Performance Indicator (an NCAA formula). Priority was higher to not cause significantly long trips versus the perfect 1 vs. 16, 2 vs. 15, etc. typical tourney seeding. Emphasis was placed on avoiding two or more teams from the same conference going to the same opening weekend round 1 regionals with four teams at each site.

West is challenging due to its massive size in comparison to fewer D2 team members, as well as two highly ranked teams near Los Angeles.

                    West Region

2 Cal. St. Bernardino (CCAA) vs. 13 Texas A&M Kingsville (LSC)
8 Colorado Mesa (RMAC) vs. 12 Azusa Pacific (PWC)

2 Cal. St. San Marcos (CCAA) vs. 16 Southwest Oklahoma (GAC)
12 Angelo State (LSC) vs. 13 Point Loma (PWC)

3 Lubbock Christian (LSC) vs. 13 Southern Nazarene (GAC)
5 Central Oklahoma (MIAA) vs. 9 Southwest Baptist (GLVC)

4 Chico State (CCAA) vs. 16 Alaska Fairbanks (GNAC)
7 Black Hills State (RMAC) vs. 15 Academy of Art (PWC)

                    WELCOME TO THE DANCE!
Southwest Baptist and Southern Nazarene. The Bearcats from Bolivar, Missouri finished 17-6 and ranked 35th out of all teams, but were nudged out of the traditional field. Similarly, SNU had a solid campaign at 21-10 and ranked 51st, but the always tough Central Region had no room for them in their top 8.

                      Midwest Region

1 Augustana (NSIC) vs. 11 Emporia State (MIAA)
6 Missouri St. Louis (GLVC) vs. 7 Michigan Tech (GLIAC)

2 Northwest Missouri (MIAA) vs. 10 MSU Moorhead (NSIC)
6 Ferris State (GLIAC) vs. 11 Southern Indiana (GLVC)

3 MN Duluth (NSIC) vs. 10 Oklahoma Baptist (GAC)
6 Washburn (MIAA) vs. 9 Truman State (GLVC)

4 West Texas A&M (LSC) vs. 10 Northern State (NSIC)
5 Fort Hays (MIAA) vs. 6 SE Oklahoma (GAC)

                      WELCOME TO THE DANCE!
Fort Hays State (20th ranked team in the country based on combined Massey/PI), Michigan Tech (27th), Oklahoma Baptist (39th), Northern State (40th), and Emporia State (42nd). All deserving of being in the field of 64, but there are just too many highly ranked teams in the Midwest part of the country.

                        This is great!!
I know with the D2 aspect they try to limit it to 2 trips for the teams due to travel costs but this is still great!! A lot better true picture of the top teams.

Maybe we can play this thing out....

Two trip limit makes sense financially, but you are only talking about four teams total that have to make three trips. Keep it centrally located such as Evansville, so that nobody has to go clear across the country for that final trip.

The West site could be in Vegas or Phoenix, for example, as proposed elsewhere on the Message Board.
The Midwest site could be somewhat centrally located, such as Kansas City or St. Louis. Springfield, Missouri has a great basketball venue for this size event.
The Northeast could find a site such as Pittsburgh, PA, Philadelphia, etc.
And the Southeast has numerous options as well, of course.

And the Final Four could be handled the same way, once those four teams are known. Save that Northwest Missouri/Washburn matchup for the championship game!
