2024-25 SMSU Mustangs: Looking to make a run

A remarkable run for the SMSU women this year. Webb might be the best coach in program history before too long.

Disappointing end for the men, but will look to make a third straight NCAA Tournament next year for the first time in program history. Omot is the only loss to graduation, but we'll see if anyone tests the transfer portal.

Future Mustang Brayson Boike just won the MN Class A Tournament for Dawson-Boyd, and was named to the All-Tournament Team after averaging 29.3 ppg across 3 games.

Boike is going to be a nice addition.

My thoughts on the end of the season as follows:

1. Stevens was not healthy the last month but that is no excuse. Maybe we had to cut some of his minutes and give them to Schlaak
2. We we left Schlaak on the bench we lost some size and some energy. Not saying that is why we sputtered, but we did. Not disagreeing that Porowski wasn't the right call, just that we played one more guard and one less big. I trust Bigs can figure out if that was the right call or not.

3. Braaten got into a bad habit of dribbling into double and triple teams. If we fix that we will be very good.

4. Boike is going to be a player. Should play right away.
5. I think there will be some surpises next year in playing, don't just assume Boike replaces Omot in the lineup.

Overall fun season. tough disappointing ending but I remind myself only 8 of 47 teams make the regional. That aint easy.

Any time I start thinking it was a disappointing season, I remind myself it's just the seventh 20-win season in program history. Andhonestly. I don't know that we were supposed to be that good. Only one senior who we will miss of course, but I think we are in a decent position to fill his shoes.

I've been thinking about this too. Actually, my mind first went to Pokorski "replacing" Omot. Boike has the ability to play right away too, but I think he could benefit from a redshirt as well. If he does play, that's where decisions become interesting. I've heard good things about the younger Schlaak as well.

Bri Stoltzman won National POY honors from the D2CCA today. First time for any basketball player from SMSU.

Hopefully Tom Webb gets some kind of coach of the year honors.
