  • NCAA Lowers D2 Basketball Games Max to 22 for 2020-2021

Found this on a football thread, but it's applicable to basketball as well. Because of budget issues nationwide, the NCAA has lowered the maximum number of games for basketball teams this winter, dropping from 26 (28 with the exempt games to start the season*) to 22.

*- Contests played as part of a conference challenge event or the Division II Tip-Off Classic must be counted in the maximum limitation. These contests are not exempt for the 2020-21 academic year.
    Other notables:
    Football from 11 to 10
    Soccer from 18 to 14
    Volleyball from 26 to 20
    Baseball from 50 to 40
    Softball from 56 to 44

Another bone-head move by the NCAA. Assuming 2 or 3 of these games were going to be at home for every team, how much money does this actually save? Not enough to make any difference whatsoever for any one school.

So many decisions being made with such crap data...on so many levels from government to education to the medical field.

This will most likely hurt the smaller schools. The games that will be eliminated will be the ones where a small school agrees to play a power one and historically received payment for doing so, So, rather than playing Western State and paying them $xxxxxxxxx to play, big State will just eliminate that game from the schedule and Western State's budget is hurt.

I'd rather see them lower the # of games for one season than cancel the season.

Fans will have to travel to get their full basketball fix. Hopefully this won't discourage athletes from participating.

So for the GLVC, it looks like we have no room for any non-conference games, as they have a 22-game conference schedule set up (as approved on 6/7/2020, https://www.glvcsports.com/documents..._D.doc?id=3436). And this schedule has a bigger-than-usual gaping hole from 12/5 to 1/3. We will have no games to determine cross-regional rankings with GLIAC and GMAC. Have either of them announced conference schedule plans yet?

GMAC never gives out any information, schools don't either, ADs don't answer e-mail and their website is crap. Other than that I hope to find out before the games start. Also I wonder what those people actually do during the day.

Just heard Findlay is hoping to have schedules finalized by mid July.

The gaping hole is a result of some schools moving up their fall semester so that it ends before Thanksgiving (which might remain even after/if COVID is eliminated or managed)
