I had a request to start this thread over here in the West forum - so here are the current performance indicators - see the Midwest forum's thread for more info on what they mean if you aren't familiar with them. If you see any errors or omissions, please let me know. My source has been known to misreport some scores. Note that only games against NCAA D2 competition are recorded.

The Performance Indicator is one of the primary pieces of criteria the selection committee uses at the end of the year. Typically the PI's aren't released until the regional rankings start to come out from the committee, however, typically in past years the teams that have finished in the Top 8 in PI have made the regional. The seeding always varies within those 8 depending on how the committee breaks down the other criteria. But basically each game is assigned a point value like if cwu won AT wwu and WWU was a team with a .750 or higher winning percentage that would be assigned maybe 21 points whereas beating a bad team at home is assigned only a few...you then add up al the points you accumulated divided by the games played and you end up with your performance indicator. Its basically a standardized way to determine who the best teams are.

Every game you play (against D2 competition) is assigned a point value based solely on three things: (1) W/L, (2) home/road/neutral, and (3) win% of opponent.

These values range from 0 to 23 and are averaged for a final score. They are constantly changing through the season, so if a team you beat was 50% but then loses a game later on to drop below 50%, your points drop accordingly within your average.

I think the performance indicator system is flawed to the extent it does not take into account the competitiveness in the wins and loses of the respective teams (a 2 point OT win is seem the same as a 35 point win). This was apparent in the selection of the women's basketball regional host last year. UAA blew out many of the common opponents that ASU had struggled with, and I think was clearly the better team (as proven by winning the regional). It also does not take into account the relative strength of the conferences. This is not currently an issue in the west region so much, but it wasn't that long ago that there were a lot of marginal teams and it didn't take much of a team to finish with a .500 plus record in the Pac West. While I would agree that it is a system that is fair to the extent that all the teams are playing by the same rules, it is a very blunt instrument when it comes to determining the relative quality of the teams. I suppose it is now the job of a good coach and AD to take PI into account when scheduling, to give your team the highest possible PI with the least risk.

Remember that this isn't THE selection criteria, but is one of multiple criteria that they selection committee may use. I've found (based on observation) that this formula generally narrows down to the top 8-10 teams but then those within the region may shift a few teams around with the considerations that you've listed. Auto-bids also throw a wrench in the system.

As we near the end of the season, I'll also add a column for wins against regionally ranked opponents - this is usually where you can see the "tiebreakers" come into play and the picture becomes more complete.

WOU has swept CWU rather convincingly and CWU is ahead of WOU in these rankings ... fraud rankings.

It is a power ranking. It doesn't take into consideration head-to-head. As with all power ranking systems, there are flaws. That is why it isn't the only tool used by the committee to pick teams for post season. It is basically used to break ties in the event that the other criteria can't separate teams. You just need your Wolves to keep winning!
