Montana State-Billings lost by 20 to Oregon State, they played in pretty tough for much of the game. I think they're going to have a really good club this year.

Western Oregon lost by 38 to the University of Washington in their exhibition opener, no surprise there going against a now Big Ten team. They lost to D2 number 5 in the nation Dallas Baptist by about 15.

Once again Jevelle Collins, who was out all last year with an achilles injury, is missing an action and hasn't played in the first two games. He's supposed to be their best player. I'm not holding my breath that this guy will ever suit up this year. I'm hoping the first two games aren't an indication of the season. The San Diego JC transfer seems to be the real deal. I really want coach Pifer to win.

I heard on good authority that NAIA Westcliff beat Asuza Pacific by 19 in a scrimmage this evening.

WOU loses by 20 to Hawaii-Hilo. It's going to be a looooooong season. Darn it, I stupidly had high hopes thinking the near-last pre-season conference pick was wrong. No, it appears to be right. Ugh, another long, cold sucking winter at Western. Wow, this program went south in a hurry.

UAA with losses to Lone Star Conference teams, by 7 to St Edwards and by 14 to Texas A&M Int’l. They play Mary this afternoon and I’ll update later.

Saint Martin's knocked off both #14 CSUSB and #5 DBU! SMU isn't even receiving votes, but that should change.

St. Martin's has done an excellent job with their program in the last decade or so. Back-to-back quality coaching hires.

UAA rally falls short as they drop a close one to previously winless University of Mary of the Great Lakes Conference, 73-72. That’s 3 consecutive losses to out of conference D2 teams.

The Seawolves make their annual to Hawaii for clashes with HPU and Chaminade next weekend. No game against Hilo this season.

Western Oregon drops a couple more by 20. Boy was I naive. I thought the coach will have finally turned the corner after a few years at the school, instead it's just going downhill. I don't know why he can't get the program back up, it's just baffling to me.

For what it's worth, Azusa struggled most of last season and just got really hot at the exact right time. Couple that with four starters graduating and I would expect things to take a while to gel. They're picked to finish fourth in the PacWest this season, with Point Loma picked to win and living up to expectations in the early games with a big win over Florida Southern on Sunday.

UAA falls to 0-5 against D2 teams, getting blown out against Chaminade by 22. It probably would have been worse if redshirt freshman, walk on, Parker Kroon not scored 19 on 7-11 shooting.

Fairbanks despite not even putting together their roster till very late competed better against Chaminade the night before.

There is no two ways about it, UAA is charmin soft inside, they have been out scored by 76 points in the paint in the 5 games against other D2 squads. And guard play overall has been inconsistent to this point.

UAA will be back at it at the end of the month against D2 Newberry college (2-0) at the Alaska Airlines Center. They have a lot to work on before then.

I understand where you're coming from. Western Oregon has won one D2 game and almost blew it over the weekend. Yesterday they lost by like 38. Again I don't know why the coach does not emphasize defense at all, they are horrifically defensively and have been for a few years now. Is it really that complex to teach? Why that's not a point of emphasis I don't understand. And they will keep losing big as long as they continue their crappy defense. I'm just surprised how far the program has sunk.

I recognize part of this is just whining on my part but I remember the late 80s, 90s and even earl 2000s when UAA was in the NCAA tournament consistently. These days they have a state of the art arena and facilities and they rarely make it anymore. I just don’t get it. The school has put so much into the program, it has a massive budget each year. Much bigger than just about any other D2 school. But the many ADs they have had just accept mediocrity from the coaching staff year after year. It’s a mystery to me why the school hadn’t brought in a more hungry coaching staff that relates to modern players better and can bring in better talent. And honestly develops the talent they have better than Rusty and Orton do. You rarely see a guy come here and really get much better.

In reality, UAA is a low major D1 school. It's the only game in town in a metro area. Someone got on this board a few years ago saying they needed to go D1 and I argued with them that there's simply no conference to go to and that's the problem.

I think Western Washington might have had their sights on that, too, although they bring absolutely nothing to the table.

Alaska Anchorage, however, brings a lot to the table with the metro area. The problem is the Big Sky, big west, the WCC, the wac, and others, are not inviting them. But yes, even though I've never been to Anchorage I hope to get up there someday, you are correct in that with the investment spent on basketball and other things going for the school there's no way they should be without a division 2 victory this season. They have the most going for them in terms of infrastructure in the GNAC.

100%. I’m with you that D1 shouldn’t be on the table especially in this era of NIL. You are correct though in that once upon a time I believe a jump was being considered but those days are over I’m fairly sure. I don’t sense much buzz for that at this point. Perhaps if the native corporations up here get aggressively involved but given they are supporting The Great Alaska Shootout for the women only…I mean that’s a whole other can worms with Rusty. There clearly is a rift there.

I’m not asking that they make a deep run every year but it shouldn’t be 7 to 10 years between trips to tournament. Otherwise what is the school investing in? There should be a some expectation on the return of investment being made from him and he is not delivering on that. But until we get an AD in here that cares? He’s an institution so not much will happen and we will keep slogging through mediocrity. It’s becoming hard to even invest time into.

The Great Alaska Shootout was awesome, wish it was still there. WSU (my D1 team) played in it, players loved it. National powers played in it. Maybe Duke isn't coming, but Stanford, UW, maybe the Zags, St. Mary's, New Mexico, etc., might show up.

Back to UAA, seems like they could win big. Alaska prep ball is real solid, some players there; get some Northwest guys, Canadians, some Californians, and they should be able to win. Perhaps a decade or more St. Martin's was nothing, they made two very good back-to-back coaching hires and they're at the top of the league or near the top. UAA could do the same.
