Famous Lefthand just hit the portal. So now if all their portal entries do transfer, Billings will lose their top 5 scorers.

SPU big man Trace Evans entered the portal. And surprising to me, CWU standout Garrett Anderson also entered the portal. After not playing significant minutes at San Jose State for two seasons, he transferred to Central where after a few slow games he broke out big. Since he already played Division 1 I am wondering If he is looking at a second chance, maybe with more of a smaller mid-major school.

That post who left a bad San Jose State program for Central, made the right choice. Maybe he's looking for another division 2 opportunity? Usually if you're not D1 the first time. you're not D1 the next time.
Feel bad for Billings, I like their coach and the program's a good one. They need to start asking for payback on the scholarships. They are funded 100% by boosters, who's intent was the players would finish their careers at the school or at least a year. They need to get the money back.

I don't see why someone would breakout at CWU and leave after one year where they made the playoffs, just to go to another D2 program. No one has really done that before. He has to be looking at trying for a smaller WAC or Big Sky D1 program maybe closer to home in Arizona perhaps. Hopefully he won't get any good offers and stay at CWU. Losing both Holden and Anderson would be tough for Central.

Big potential losses for CWU. Holden has to be gone. Anderson? Not sure, but he's a player. That and losing 6-9 Brizee to graduation. I don't mind players getting paid. It's just the seemingly free for all that happens and the seasons aren't even done yet.

A couple years ago the University of Idaho took the Western Washington point guard, he was extremely inconsistent and erratic, though he had his moments. I wouldn't have paid $60,000 for them like this guy's getting.
If he's that good why did everybody miss on him out of high school, and that he had to walk on at W. Washington?
Let's not give the coaches a free pass here, they are amazingly lazy these days. If a guy doesn't look good on a couple minutes of hudL, they are out. You never see coaches at high school games anymore, not even state tournaments unless there's a no-brainer five star athlete that they're not going to get that they want to watch. I wouldn't spend this much money on a 511 former walk-on division 2 point guard if I was a D1 school, no way.

Through some of these conversations I’ve had with players, boosters and coaches…NAIA teams are starting to figure out how to find kids some money. Even if it’s only for a couple K a semester, or finding outside money sources to make partial scholarships full ride. I know a couple kids have told me that they or teammates turned down D2 offers for NAIA because of financial reasons.
UAA for one has been very reluctant to go down that path, as from what I’m hearing many D2 teams are. In UAAs case we are seeing a year by year decline in the quality of recruit they are landing. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to put together the correlation.
I’m curious what D2 looks like in comparison to some NAIA programs if this continues over the next couple years. These are easy choices for kids to make, no student loan debt plus a couple thousand of walking around money. Versus some debt and very little walking around money. D2 teams are going to be left with decisions moving forward that they are either going to sink or swim and stop doing business like it’s 2004 still.
As with APU dropping down to D3, this might be a trend with many schools that really don’t want to compete in this fashion. And I’m not criticizing that decision, just explaining the realities of what it takes to compete for high caliber scholarship athletes. For some of these athletic departments that question will remain, how much money can we raise and invest in sports that draw just a couple hundred people a game?Last edited by Anchorage; 03-29-2025, 09:13 AM.

Wow. I know I have said in the past how I've been impressed with the Central retaining their key players, but it finally looks like the portal is starting to hit Central hard as well. 4th leading scorer and GNAC honorable mention selection Maverick Sanders is now in the portal, joining Cavin Holden, Garrett Anderson, and reserve Kobe Parlin.
