You're right. Don't know why I was thinking three schools would continue after this round of consolidation. For some reason Mansfield having already shuttered their football program confuses me for some reason!! Currently five football programs, three possibly losing their programs, two remaining programs.

At present it's unclear what effect this will have on FB and other athletics. West of the Allegheny Mountains CAL U, BORO and CLARION are being renamed PENNSYLVANIA WESTERN UNIVERSITY. The same is going on East of the mountains with LOCK HAVEN, MANSFIELD (non FB) and BLOOMSBURG but the name has not been decided. Possible (probable??) loss of 2-3 FB programs won't threaten a league with 16 FB teams but it potentially will start a new round of poaching nearby conferences especially the MEC and GMAC. Time will tell.

Don't pay too much attention to these press releases. The conservative legislature of the state for several generations has been shifting the educational portion of the state budget toward the big name institutions of Penn State, Pitt and Temple and away from the PASSHE schools. In fact the only reason some are still standing is the political clout of small town legislators who trade favors to see that their local school isn't closed. Under a credible business model the current 14 schools would be somewhere between 7-10.
As far as athletics, there's an interesting discussion being had in the PSAC section under the heading "LHU relieves Kelling of HC duties".
