  • Crazy Potential Conference Championship Scenario

Obviously there are still a few weeks of football to play; however, the CIAA could be in for one crazy predicament due to St Augs not playing this year. Since St Augs dropped, the conference did away with divisions this year and is taking the top two teams based on conference records. To make things more complicated the conference is only counting 7 conference games instead of 8. So there were games that counted as a conference game for one team, but not for the other team (WSSU (counted) v. VSU (didn't count), JCSU (counted) v. VUU (didn't count), Livingstone (counted) v. Bowie (didn't count)).

Here's where the issue could happen. If WSSU wins out and JCSU wins every other game then both would be 6-1 in conference. If VSU wins out and VUU wins every other game then both would be 6-1 in conference. If this were the old division route then it's simple and WSSU v VSU would be the conference championship game; however, this year we'd have a 4 way tie for first place.

In this scenario, if you only look at conference games that counted for both teams, you'd have JCSU with the head to head over VSU. VUU with the head to head over WSSU. WSSU with the head to head over JCSU. VSU with the head to head over VUU. If you throw in the partial counting games then you'd also have JCSU over VUU and WSSU over VSU (granted I don't know how they'd count these games for tie breaker purposes).

Long story short this could be a wild finish to the season. It think that it is very likely that VSU and VUU win their remaining games until they meet in the final week. If WSSU beats JCSU this week then I think it is likely we beat FSU to finish the regular season. If JCSU losses this week to WSSU, then I still think it is likely they win the remaining of their games.

Our loss to WSSU and Unions loss to JCSU wont have any impact on who will be in the CHAMPIONSHIP. The top former south teams will beat on each other. WSSU could beat JCSU and they could both lose to FSU if they played the spoiler. Giving both 2 losses. Then there could be 3 teams with 2 losses JCSU-WSSU-VSU!! OR If we beat Union it could be VSU vs VUU BOTH WITH ONE LOSS HIGHLY UNLIKELY BUT YOU NEVER KNOW!! LOVE WHATS GOING ON IN THE CIAA

That's true, but after losing to Livingstone I don't know if this FSU team has what it takes to beat both WSSU and JCSU. Who knows, maybe they will come out of their bye week with a renewed focus.

Thanks. This is very confusing. VSU still has a chance!

I feel you but we are saying WSSU will beat JCSU after VUU blew out WSSU and Shaw. Shaw had a shot to win against them. When there is this much parity its any given Saturday.

The Championship scenario is wide open, and I'll be the first to eat my words. This year's Ram club has been impressive in many facets and now they have the opportunity to control their own destiny. Massey and his staff have done a much better job with respect to self-inflicted wounds, i.e. penalties! I still hate that he doesn't trust his kids to "go for it" on short yardage situations and the play calling is very basic, but admittedly this team has yielded the best results to date. Based on the remaining conference schedule overall, these next three weeks will make the championship picture much clearer, but as others have said in this thread, anything can happen! This is what makes each CIAA Saturday EXCITING!

Well JCSU has prevented part of this crazy scenario from happening. At this point as long as they win one more game I believe they are in the championship game.

Technically though from a sole conference record if JCSU splits their final two games then they'd be 6-1. If VUU were to win out and lose to VSU, and VSU win their other games, then there would be a 3 way tie of teams with 6-1 conference records. JCSU beat both VUU and VSU, but the VUU game counted as OOC. Presumably JCSU would have the head to head over both, unless the conference only counts the "conference games" then I guess you'd get in a tiebreaker scenario.

Now the real crazy scenario could happen if somehow JCSU loses to FSU and Livingstone, and then VSU beats VUU (both teams winning their other games). You'd have a 6-1 VSU and 6-1 VUU playing a rematch the following week in the conference championship game.

If we beat VUU and JCSU split it will be a VSU 6-1 vs JCSU 6-1 Championship. VSU would have the head to head over VUU. Only Conference games factor into any tie breakers.

Unless by divine intervention JCSU loses their last two games, it ALWAYS comes down to the last game of the season for VSU x VUU.

Then the question will be, how many will make the NCAA playoffs?

If JCSU wins the next two games and the winner of VUU/VSU also wins out and beats JCSU, then I think the conference gets two teams in. A 10-1 JCSU and either a 9-1 VUU or 8-2 VSU (D2 records).

If JCSU completely wins out, going 11-0, it might be tough for the loser of the conference championship game to make it in.

VUU will get in if they lose to JCSU but wins against VSU. The playoff committee doesnt double count losses to the same opponent.
