  • 1,445 days since Valdosta last beat West Florida. #NeverForget

The date was November 9, 2019

There was some Valdosta fans on here after the game that were talking down quite a but to little ol' West Florida. (Not BlazerLady, she's too classy for all of us, myself included.) I made a prediction at that time that Valdosta State was not as all mighty and powerful as some of those misguided fans were saying. My prediction was that West Florida would never lose in football to Valdosta State ever again and I truly meant that. The reaction was treated as if I was beyond insane and had never seen a football game in my life.

    Well, here we are.

The streak on the line 1,445 days since my prediction and I'm still the one that was right. West Florida has proven even in a down year that they were not a team that just had 1 good season and went away. I don't need to make that point anymore for them. All of D2 football knows that now. It is still fun however to see if my prediction was correct. Will it stand the test of time?

It's on the line Saturday. It will be up to 1,449 days at the time of kickoff. A lot to play for between 2 good teams. I'm taking West Florida by 1.

Unless we can figure out how to stop the run and tackle someone, it will be a long day for VSU. I can't wait for UWF to drop down to D3! :)

I'll be sad if/when UWF moves from D2. A handful of years ago I would have been eager to move up to that "next level" but I've learned that D2 football is really special and I've learned to really love the GSC and the schools and rivalries in it. I didn't understand at first why GSC fans cheered for other GSC schools when they played out of conference. I definitely did not do that at first, quite the opposite. Now if UWF isn't involved my next favorite team is any GSC team that is playing. I hope the rivalry with Valdosta goes on for a long time.

I've been watching D2 so long, that when I first started it was E2.

I agree wholeheartedly with your D2 thoughts but not pulling for GSC rivals playing others. I can do it even when I want to.

I understand for the schools moving up is about money but I don’t get it from the fan side especially in sports other than football. Just using UWF as an example. UWF has had phenomenal athletic success in baseball, soccer, volleyball, golf and others at the national championship level. But I don’t think they could compete at the D1 championship level in those sports with the traditional powers. Maybe they could land in a conference that is competitive but that will be the ceiling for most transitioning schools.

As a player in an olympic sport not good enough to go to a D1 power school, I wanted to go somewhere I could compete and win, I did not care about the level.

That may color my feelings about moving up a division and maybe that makes me in the minority, but I don’t completely understand fans and alums wanting to move up.

UWA isn’t in a position to move up a division and they aren’t competing on the national championship level but it isn’t out of the realm of possibility. I like D2 and I have faith the GSC office will find a solution to our current problems with football.

It's hard to disagree with a man that clearly has done his research and knows his stuff! It's impossible for me to wrap my mind around the fact that you've posted on this forum 9,774 times and you didn't know that West Florida went through Valdosta on its way to a National Championship.

Since you don't know that I'll assume you don't know this...West Florida is in it's 7th year of playing football.

In the 2nd year of ever playing football they went to the D2 National Championship game which has never been done at any level of NCAA in any sport.

So in 7 years West Florida has gone to the National Championship game twice and won it once not to mention another year UWF went to what would be the equivalent of the D2 Final Four.

Valdosta has been playing football since 1982. That's a hell of a head start. Despite that head start, West Florida has jumped Valdosta already as a program (only 7 years in in case you forgot.) Any D1 conference in America would easily choose West Florida over Valdosta State. Year in and year out now West Florida is seen as more of a threat to win the National Championship than Valdosta State. Also in case you forgot, Valdosta has not beat West Florida going on 1,500 days!

Congrats on your 2004 National Championship. What the hell were you guys doing your first 22 years of football? We went to one in 2 years and we won one in 4 years.

Some of the Valdosta fans are very knowledgable and I really respect them. You were proud of yourself for a gotcha comment that made you look like you are very very very new here.

                    My bad;

MCKINNEY, Texas (WKRG) — In just their 4th year of playing football, the University of West Florida has won the Division II National Football Championship! The Argos defeated Minnesota State today in McKinney, Texas.

I will man up and say Argo’s have acomplished a lot for such a young program.

I will aslo say Coach Pete Shinnick is great coach also in recruiting ... Peace

I think the difference is this: When UWF first started football, they were very calculated and measured and thus began a plan. When VSC first started it was like "Hey, let's start a football team"
                      LOL....

                        You can
reset the clock, Argo’s have a great team, and really outplayed Blazers. Penalties and turnovers hurt.

I was wrong. I really didn't think it would ever happen again. I was wrong. It was a good run, but I was wrong.

We have 4 or 5 really good logos to choose from to wear on our helmets and we would rather have a script font that nobody can read that doesn't look anything like West Florida football. We used to be able to have nice things. Maybe it's a good call though to change it up so we don't look like West Florida anymore though because the product on the field matches that. When we play we don't look anything like West Florida anymore. Not the West Florida football I loved watching at least.

We can't pass anymore. We can't make 20 yard field goals. We go from the shotgun on 4th & 1 so that we have to gain 6 yards instead of 1. This isn't one of the top 5 West Florida teams and we've only played football for 7 years. Nobody in D2 has the recruiting advantages that West Florida has and this is what we do with that now. I'd make the case it's not even fair the advantages West Florida has. UWF should win the National Championship 8 out of 10 years at this point. That's how much of advantage we should have. West Alabama is our daddy though. Valdosta State is back to a team we admire and wish we could be.

Coach Shinnick isn't walking in that door. Austin Reed isn't walking in that door. Tate Lehtio isn't walking in that door. David Durden isn't walking in that door. Our old awesome uniforms and helmets aren't walking in that door. It's starting to feel like 30 years has past since we beat Minnesota State with the way everything looks. The UWF magic is gone.

We have a bunch of guys on this team that don't care if they get a 15 yard penalty. They absolutely know they will get a 15 yard penalty to penalize the entire team and school and they don't care at all about that. I know they don't care because they have done the same exact thing now for 9 games. I've never seen a more penalized team and the penalties are well deserved. This team taunts other teams players on about every tackle. Yet, this team may not even make the playoffs. This team is 6-3 with some of those wins against schools like Kentucky Wesleyan, McKendree and Shorter. So really this team is 3-3 and that makes us so good that we can afford 15 yard penalties left and right.

If we make the playoffs, we make the playoffs. We will beat Wingate despite double digit 15 yard penalties and then we will lose to somebody the next week.
If we don't make the playoffs, we don't make the playoffs. More time to hopefully fix whatever the heck happened to West Florida football. I miss it.

Zero days since Valdosta State beat once mighty West Florida.

                          I was wrong.

I believe UWF hired the perfect coach. Had we gotten Coach Erk, we probably would have had earlier success.
