  • 2024 Spring Practice

The Argos began spring practice this week and the spring roster shows the Argos double figures deep with upper classmen at all three levels on defense and the OL.

There will be a new QB this year with returners Stokes and Rich battling a couple of local HS freshman and a D1 Jr., Bartolo, from Charleston Southern. They will be throwing to a WR group with just a handful of upperclassmen and handing off to RB light on game experience with exception of Woods who returns from last year.

RB roster has two small scatbacks and four bigger 200 lb plus bruisers. Same three TE from last year return for 2024.There will be new PK and Gregory returns as punter.

The spring game is March 21st at Pen Air Field at 6 pm.

Argos announce Alvance Robinson as OC. He coached the WR during the 2019 championship season and has been successfully coaching WR at FCS and XFL since leaving UWF during the COVID shutdown. He will also coach the WR and it looks like the passing game will be a feature going forward and in good hands.

The Argo spring game was dominated by the defense before a few hundred fans on a cool night. The Argos used 4 QB with the D1 junior transfer Bartolo going first followed by last year’s backups Rich and Stokes and a local HS freshman. Rich and Stokes were placekick holders for the local HS RS freshman Lombardo. Last year’s punter Gregory did most of punting.

The kickoff return team ran returns without opposition and the punt team kicked to one returner. The QB were down by simple touch with no contact and they had no time to connect on any deep ball.

The defense shut out the offense on all but one of the first 6 long drives. The D1 QB Bartolo ran the offense on the only long drive TD set up by a 50 yard reverse.

All of the first three QB threw a short TD pass when they moved the offense to start in red zone and the TE got a TD on a designed pass play. They ran a lot of read options where the QB faked an inside handoff and ran outside for good yardage. Stokes displayed a lot of speed on one of these runs and threw a perfectly executed screen pass to the RB on one of the long drive attempts. Bartolo also displayed good running ability and all of first three QB threw a nice catchable deep ball, they just didn’t connect with the WR.

The Argo running game looked better and was more productive than the passing game, which was probably less than 50% on completions. The defense looked really good in all phases and was pressuring the QB so bad I think the coaches changed the rules of engagement and blitzed less frequently halfway through the game to give the QB a chance to throw.

A typical spring game where the defense is way ahead of the offense but the Argo RB looked good. I just don’t know who was who since the jersey numbers didn’t match the roster numbers. Looking forward to seeing which QB emerges in the fall, but it looks like the D1 transfer Bartolo has the lead right now.

Based on his Instagram post last month, I think there’s a strong chance Shomari Mason will be back at UWF this fall.

Coach Nobles said in recap of spring game that it is 3 way battle for QB1 and won’t name starter until first game. Stokes threw for most yards (39) and RB TJ Lane scored the only rushing TD and had the most rushing yards.

Coach was disappointed in the offense but very pleased with the defense and realizes that the outstanding D was the reason for the struggles on offense. No one was injured in the game, which was also a positive outcome. He believes the offense did better against the D this spring game than they did last year and that was progress for the team.
